There's nothing quite like a fully loaded Scania V8 accelerating in a high gear. You can literally feel every cylinder firing, it's insane. Combine that with the turbo whistle when shifting, man... Also: Models for Scania's are right on the front on the badge (if not removed by the people who modified the trucks). The cabover is a T580. T is the US-style model with 580 HP. The others are either the R or S model. AFAIK, the most powerful factory Scania is a 770 HP one.

@Tim Derks The right term of such "long-nose-trucks" is *conventional* (cabin and driver *behind* the engine) in the US and Australia. Cabover = *cab* in / cabin (and driver) *over* the engine (also cab-over-engine / COE). Because of this, the T580 is a *conventional,* and *not* a cabover / cab-over.

We call them Bullbars, meant for the guys who drive in Scandinavia. It is meant to offer some more protection when you hit a deer going 40mph. And the Scania was a Scania T-Cab. Scania themselfs does not produce them anymore due to massive sale drops in the 2000‘s. They have been declining over the years but they officially pulled the plug on them with the scania 4 - series. However, there is a Dutch company named Valstuin which will convert your cab over to a T-Cab. (Edit! Thanks you everyone, due to the comments I have to correct myself a little in terms of T-Series productions years: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scania_PRT-range Thank you!)

For those of you who may not know: SCANIA is the name of the southmost peninsula in Sweden. That´s where it all started with humble means in the early 1900´s. The operation much later moved to just south of Stockholm where they reside today. Their aim is to make the worlds best trucks, coaches and engines. And it is met in close competition with Volvo.

The reason for cabovers being more popular in Europe is because we have a limit on total length of truck and trailer(s). So with a cabover design we can squeeze a little extra haul capacity out of the combo.

Under the bodywork they're more alike than you think. Engines are usually the same (DAF uses the same PACCAR engines that KW and Peterbilt use, Volvo engines are the same globally, Mercedes = modern Detroit diesel, Navistar is starting to use MAN engines, KamAZ in Russia was using Cummins engines until sanctions hit last year, KrAZ in Ukraine uses Ford Europe engines since 2014). North American trucks are long wheelbase conventionals with big sleepers because our roads are wide enough to accommodate them. In terms of performance, EU trucks either have way less power for standard haul because they're limited to 90km/h or way more power for heavy haul because EU allows much heavier trucks. North American trucks are usually faster as they don't have the 90km/h speed limiter that Europe mandates, and streamlined conventionals usually get better fuel economy than cabovers.

Hi, nice to see you appreciate the European trucks as well. Those bumper guards are also called Moosbars, they originate from Scandinavian countries where they have roads in wast open wild spaces. So originally these Moos-bars were mounted to trucks with the same reason as they were in Australia only in Europe they needed protection from close encounters with mooses :) I think nowadays they have decorative purpose more than anything else. DAF truck you saw is actually a Dutch truck brand and it is a part of Paccar group which I belive is also an owner of at least half of US brands. As far as brands in EU is concerned there are 7 main players in heavy truck range: Scania, Volvo (Sweden); Mercedes, MAN (Germany); Renault (France); DAF (Netherlands); IVECO (coop Italy-France-Spain-Germany); Ford is becoming a heavy truck brand in Europe in last 5 years or so, the factory is actually in Turkey otherwise Ford Europe is Germany based I think.

For the protection on the front I have also heard bullbars, but some drivers in Sweden have (directly translated) called them moose catchers. Even with a big truck like that, it is not fun getting half a ton of moose straight into your engine. Yes, you will likely survive but have to forget about delivering the load. Sidenote: SAAB cars are one of the few cars that actually was constructed to "deal with" moose collisions (if I remember correctly). The problem when a small car hits a moose, is that it hits the legs - the rest of the moose goes straight into your windshield. Half a ton of an injured moose that kicks around inside your car is what we can call "a problem".
@wykydytron
@wykydytron Жыл бұрын
Moose doesn't kick around in your car, it literally rips roof of the car along with everyone inside. Hitting moose is 10x more dangerous then high speed headon collision for exactly reason you stated, you hit moose in legs so whole weight if it just hits A pillars on car or it goes directly thru window and that is devastating as A pillars are not designed to take any hit so they will give up very easily.

A very nice one this is :) There are generally two designs: the old one like you mention at 5:47 ( built between 2004-2017), and the newer version like at 6:08 (built from 2016 onwards). They both come with a V8 in different power outputs. The type badge says it all: the one at 6:08 is called R770, it has 770 horsepower. There is also the S model, which is about 20 cm higher than the R, it has a flat floor and a more spacious cabin. And the nose one is the T model, which is quite rare in Europe because of a law stating the maximum length of any truck + trailer combination: 18.75 metres. The longer the truck, the shorter the trailer can be by law.
@ehsnils
@ehsnils Жыл бұрын
In Sweden and Finland the max length is longer. Sweden it's 25.25 (without exemption) if they haven't extended it. I think Finland allows an even longer length. This results in some weird trailer setups where there are companies going from the Netherlands to Sweden where they have three trucks until the ferry to Sweden, then they add a dolly and run it with two trucks instead. I'm not sure about the exact vehicle combo, but fewer pulling vehicles means improved fuel economy per cargo unit.

The first PRT range was unofficially split in two 5 series and 6 series. Not major changes but most noticeable is the grille. Before PRT there were 1, 2, 3 and 4 series which had different badging. "164" meant 16 liter 4 series. Also Scania had to change the badging again on the newest version of the S cab after legal issues with Mercedes. So now it would be 770 S

There have been some V8 diesels in heavy trucks in North America, but they fell out of favor. The old 2 stroke detroits used to be common in V8 configuration as the 8v71 and 8v92, but they had a high pitched deafeaning scream, not a V8 rumble. The closest the American market ever got to the Scania V8 was the Caterpillar 3408, it was an 18L V8 diesel that was made in the 1980s, sounds a lot like the Scania with some good pipes on it, wasn't common because it was very expensive and very heavy, so could put to much weight on the steer axle of many trucks. 8-10L V8 diesels were popular in medium duty American trucks in the 70s and 80s, most of them not even turbocharged so not particularly powerful, they were mostly replaced by the Cummins 5.9L and CAT 7.2L in the 90s

That wonderful purple monster at 5:11 isn't a Scania, but you can tell it's its sibling. This is a 2021 Volvo FH12 Globetrotter. Its headlights are not unique, this is the new design, the fully LED light fixture. Volvo and Scania are sister brands because they are both produced in Sweden. Scania also has a beaked version from the factory, nicknamed Torpedo. The beaked variation also affects Volvo and DAF. Thus, the FH becomes NH, the DAF XF becomes XT. R680 on the front of the truck, on the radiator grille, means that this is the 680 horsepower member of the R series. In general, the largest factory version is 730 horses in the "S" and "R" series. The unique and rare 1,200 horsepower version is also used for heavy cargo transport, always with a V8 engine. In terms of cabin size, there is a low-living room, a medium-sleeping cabin, a higher Strealine, the largest Topline, and the longer version of the Topline, the Longline. The aforementioned Volvo does have a bullbar. It can also be equipped with various lights, work lights, and reflectors.

@@mrvwbug4423 Oh I know that, I think Volvo, Mercedes and MAN have modernized theire V8s too, but I don't see them as often anymore.
