I work in a used car dealership and we currently have 3 in stock. They get parked out the front next to the new Mustangs, Mercedes Benzs and Audis. Some still have manual wind up windows and non electric rear view mirrors and they are 2022 models. My brother used to own the 1993 ute model and would drive directly through the bush running over trees and giant rocks like it was nothing. We drove it through water up to the top of the steering wheel, dried the seats out for an hour and drove it 4 hours home. The best thing about not changing for years means spare parts are nearly everywhere and most towns have an expert or two if anything ever (haha, good joke) breaks on them.

My friends are travelling the outback, with a toddler, in a "clapped out combi", before their next child is due, their mates in a LandCruiser with caravan are always trying to catch up or check on them! In a busy suburban underground carpark these are a nuisance! In real country Australia they are essential! 😁👍

The reason why the 70 series looks like it is from decades past is because it actually is! The 70 series was introduced as a new model in 1984, and was considered the latest and greatest new Landcruiser at the time. Newer, more modern Landcruiser models eventually came along to replace this "antique" however these new ones were not deemed to be as capable and had become more soft-road luxury SUV's than hard-core off-road workhorses, so Toyota made the decision to continue parallel production of the 70 Series. It received a facelift to the front end in 2007 however it is essentially the same as the vehicle that was first released 40 years ago (obviously with some engine and safety upgrades). They are actually also available in LHD and are sold around the world, however for some reason aren't a dealer import to the US.

Oh and don’t forget in the GXL version featured front and rear lockers are standard! I drove brand new ones of these for work around car yards, and they really are no-frills. Depending on the options the customer chose, some of these 70 series don't even come with radios. They are as bare-bones as they can be. Some do have a more modern infotainment system as well with built in Bluetooth and GPS, But they were probably around 25-30% of the new cars. There isn't much space in them, they're all manual transmission, and they handle like 20 ton trucks.

Great video. Don't worry, Ian, I'm drooling too. It's the old maxim..."if it ain't broke, don't fix it", so why mess with something that works? Toyota listens to its customer base and knows what off-roaders want and need. Ian, I am sure you can relate to this but when you're out in the "back of beyond", especially in the vast interior of Australia you need simplicity and reliability because if something does break (which is pretty rare in these kinds of vehicles) you need to be able to do makeshift repairs until you can get the rig back to town. With modern cars you just cannot do that. When I worked in exploration, Tojos are all we had. You just knew you could depend on them in the rugged outback.

The gauge he used to measure the console is a Shore hardness gauge which measures hardness of materials using the Shore hardness scale. Shore is a lower hardness test than Rockwell or Vickers which are used on steel. I remember from my school days the manual version of the gauge was called a Shore Schleroscope which used to drop an internal puck and then measure the bounce.

Having vinyl seats and floor covering, a quick hose out of the mud, and you're good to go. The only design fault on these vehicles, besides the rear track difference, is the placement of the alternator. It sits low and I've gone through two of them, (mud ingestion) so I always carry a spare.

These may start declining in sales in Australia and eventually be phased out. I work in a Government role and we have just replaced an entire fleet (~98) of these 4.5 V8 Diesel 79 series troop carriers...all were low milage, modified extensively but they don't meet ANZCAP 5 star ratings and that is now a requirement for all government vehicles. This meant changing to modified 200s cruisers (thankfully all V8's also) at significant expense. It's likely private contractors in the mining and energy markets will also implement policies requiring 5 star ratings for the entire fleet. I have a pic of one of our rolled 79s Troop Carriers and it's not pretty, with flattened A, B & C pillars. We can't in good conscience keep using them.

A GREAT Aussie 4b show is ALL 4 ADVENTURE. The stuff they put their 4b's through is insane, and they tow a giant trailer with a side by side and boat on it, and the other tows a small caravan, it's mind blowing. You have to check it out man, REALLY!

horsepower wise it would also be a lot lighter than all the luxury rigs. with these, 200,000 Km is just run in. lol. BTW, Ian, you can get one when you move to Aus?

That's what most of us in the 4x4 community want, reliability and simplicity. If I could buy my 1992 Landcruiser 80 series brand new I'd be all over it like white on rice

clock is very very similar to the first 1988 70series ,,, heater controls are identical to the first 1988 first 70 series ,, . The first model had a 6 cyl diesel ,later versions had a 6cyl turbo diesel then the v8 version came out .The later v8 had far less trouble than the first models of v8.

I'd use the idle up off road on a bumpy uphill. Stops you bouncing the throttle.

This is how I feel about the mid-90s Chevy S-10. My husband had one when we got together and I loved it so much. If I could buy that truck today, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

Bloody brilliant!!! Manual locking hubs ( so you know they’re locked in ) Traditional gear sticks for transfer case 2 or 4wd high low range … Once again you know it’s changed … 4 wheel discs … because you need to stop And a V8 diesel turbo … Under stressed to the max !!!

Cars in Australia are taxed more. So our cars are heaps more expensive here. A Ford F-150 here is $150,000 aud. About 100,000 usd. Our tax prices on cars is insane

The L/C 70 series is the only favourite 4WD in Papua New Guinea 🇵🇬. It is the best on and off road vehicle alive....fuel efficient, very touch and fitting for PNG's rough terrain.

I wish you could have seen the 4wd market in Australia over the years. I used to work at ARB years ago, and LOVED being able to see and drive so many variations of 4x4. I still miss my GQ Patrol shorty.

@IWrocker regarding your snorkel nit pick, most of us put an aftermarket snorkel on them anyway as the stock one is not technically a snorkel, it is not properly plumbed or sealed at the guard or at the midpoint. We stick Safari snorkels or stainless ones on it. If you're ever in Sydney I'll take you for a ride in mine!

I see the latest Land Cruiser 70's series very often, brand spanking new, rolling out of the factory in Portugal (Afaik, one of two places where left hand drive 70 series are still made). It's very saddening to know they are made just for export to Africa and Middle East, and they aren't allowed in the Old World any more (emissions and NCAP issues) :( I'd trade any modern equivalent for one of those and still pay premium. The "old parts" we see aren't from old stock, contrary to what people may expect. They are in fact brand new parts made accordingly to the original specs. Any doubts and just pop out a switch or some plastic trim and see on the inside the fabrication date that's stamped in the plastic. Which makes these even more desirable, good materials, built-to-last engineering, and built to be repairable philosophy. Everything about these beasts is enticing for a dude that has a nonchalant demeanour and just likes to get to the point. Ultimate workhorses in terms of reliability and absence of frills. Best off-road vehicle I ever drove.
