I've just had a Scotch mate that I first met in 1997 when I moved to Berlin come to visit me in England last week. I've not seen him in the flesh for 6 years and all we did all weekend was rip the piss out of each other. I had tears in my eyes because I missed him so much but they were being pushed out of the way by tears of laughter as we tore strips off each other.

You guys in other countries may think this is brutal, but it's all taken in good fun. During the pandemic. Football was played without spectators due to social distancing. The players complained they couldn't play as well without the fans. So they played football chants through speakers to give the grounds a more familiar atmosphere! 😂

The other side of our crowd singing watch 64, 000 people sing in unison GREENDAY CROWD SING BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY AT HYDE PARK.....or any LAST NIGHT OF THE PROMS. .. so fyi we are generally very polite to strangers, might even apologise to you if you stand on our foot. I once saw someone else apologise to a paving slab for tripping up and look round embarrassed to see if anyone noticed. However for our friends of long standing we can dream up the most foul derogatory slurs. It's a sign of deep love and funniest when spoken in a very upper class accent. I once saw an extremely well dressed woman in her 60s say to another older woman in Chanel and pearls " come on you tired old slapper( woman of lose morals and possibly questionable occupation) let me give you a hug you have had a hard day. So I understood by that they were probably best friends.

Jimmy Savile was a famous DJ working at BBC, presenter of the famous UK Top of the Pop which was like Dick Clark's American Bandstand. He turned out to be a paedophile vicitmizing hundred of young girls, but was never convicted as most of the evidence was exposed after he died. Adam Johnson was a good UK professional footballer but was found out to be a paedophile with a 15 year old teenager. Sentenced to 6 years in prison but released after 3 years. He was in England's U1, U21 and Senior Team, played in the 2010 World Cup. Thus, a very good footballer that got his career ended with the jail sentence. Tried to paly abroad after prison release but I see no record of that.

Hooliganism literally caused alot of the clubs to be banned from UEFA tournaments. The last club to be banned is Lazio and it was quite recent. Basically the morning of the Europa Cup match between Liverpool and Lazio at Anfield, 3 Lazio fans from Italy brutally attacked and stabbed a young Liverpool fan near the vicinity of Anfield just because he was wearing a Liverpool shirt. So the Kop, knowing they cannot retaliate without LFC being punished with sanctions or possibly bans, instead chanted all sorts of vile and derogatory insults about Italians.

Your reaction to just the first one was really funny. Hang on a minute, what am I hearing? There's no way I'm hearing that. Um, ok I'll, check the- HOLY MOTHER OF GOD, WHAT IS HAPPENING??? Enjoyed all of it - nice reaction mate. Adam Johnson totally deserved it. Sunderland fans were really angry that the club had allowed him to play 28 games after he'd been arrested and was on bail (i think you say bond in the US). He was suspended for two games immediately after the initial arrest, but then they allowed him to play for the next 11 months. They only dropped him from the team one day after he had pled guilty, in court, to two of the four charges. The fans felt that he had made them all look bad, and had shamed their name. Johnson claimed under oath that he had admitted what he had done to the CEO of the club. Whether this is true or not, I'm not sure. This could easily just have been something he said to damage the club. In any case, she resigned, and the club apologised profusely to the victim. That poor kid had to deal with her abuser being allowed to play, and her being called a liar, for 11 months.

'League One Tour'...unlike US sports, football teams that finish at the top of a league get promoted to the next higher tier and teams that finish at the bottom get relegated to a lower tier league. How many depends on the league and country...usually top/bottom 2 or 3 go up/down....so there's actual consequences at stake. There's no getting first choice of best players in a draft system if you end up coming last...you're just out of the league and consequently there's some hefty financial incentives or penalties that come with that. Higher tier means there's more money involved from TV rights and vice versa. Dropping down the league also typically results in lower attendance at games...thus even less money...thus can't afford to pay or buy better players...so it's a slippery slope. There's no languishing in the same league no matter if you are rooted to the bottom for all eternity. That chant, whatever team it was...the context is that they're saying they've been relegated out of the Championship (second tier of English football...with Premier being the highest)...and they'll be playing next season in 'League One' (hence going on a league one tour) but they're saying they hope to go straight back up by winning promotion the following season. 'We're going down, but straight back up'. No idea if they did or not, but that's pretty typical British self-deprecating humour.

We do have lines, of course - that's important to note. Some things really really shouldn't be said, whether the fans think it's in fun or not. At least one player has asked the fans for a specific chant to be retired. Not because he was personally upset by it, he said, but because he was concerned that some fans would feel unwelcome, and that also kids would think it was OK to say to each other. It's difficult to educate kids about not being hurtful when somebody they may look up to appears to be accepting of it.
