True but it's lesser than before. Football has become more and more about entertainment rather than the actual sport. Penalties are a joke now, everyone at any given moment can get that gift, more goals guaranteed, players go and play for whoever pays the most instead of building something at a club, some mediocre football clubs transformed themselves into oil companies, stats and records are being broken every year because of the amount of games played, an Asian country - which won the Asian Cup - competes in a northern and central American tournament, 48 countries will compete in the next (what people will still call a) "World Cup" etc etc Football lost it's soul and der for the passion will be less and less.

What you might not realise: In Europe, football (association football - for short soccer) is a religion and if you see the hardcore fans you will probably see that. That’s also why fans of the home and away teams don’t sit in the same parts of the stadium but are separated - otherwise fights would break out (as they often do in the streets afterwards :D)

What I hate about this thing is that the destroy public transport or other facilities in the process and take up a huge amount of police force that could ve used somewhere else. They once closed of like 6 out of 12 tracks on a big station where I was so that the away fans can get in they're special train. The train will also be fully demolished by them and needs to be cleaned up heavily. A bit more respect to the public would be good.

10:19 In that clip are, if I understood it right, Paris the visiting away team. Those big away games, or invasions it is very important to march up to the stadium and show your colors and presence in rival territory. Usually the fans gather at a pup or similar and then march together to the stadium. Football in Europe is all about passion, heritage and tribalism. From grandfather to father to son. It's a religion and the stadium is our temple.

On May 19th, 2024,I enter my 8th decade and attended 1,770 matches, mostly,in London, England and saw endless thousands of others and we thought we would give you a nice, gentle start. Some pf those fans, like the opening marching supporters were AWAY from Home. Most fans, including all Away fans in their separate sections, STAND throughout the 90 minutes even though they are in (compulsorily) All Seater Stadiums. Quite a few Football Clubs are re-introducing Safe Standing Sections. 10:13 Thats why there was a away rule for a long time in the Uefa Championsleague final-stages, where every game had two legs, so every team had to play once away. the goals from these two legs were added together and if there was a draw the goals scored as away team counted more. Means , if A vs B is 1:2 in the first leg ( the away team always comes as second at the scoreboard in europe ) and second leg is 2:2 than team B would win due to more away goals and Team B would reach the next stage of the finals (A would drop out obviously). They got rid of this Rule during the Covid season, since there where no Fans to cheer ,so no away disadventage .

If the first leg finished Team A 1-2 Team B and the second leg finished Team B 2-2 Team A then Team B go through as outright winners as the score at the end of the tie would be Team A 3-4 Team B. If Team B were to go through on away goals then the first leg finishes Team A 1-2 Team B and the second leg Team B 0-1 Team A then the overall score at the end of the tie would be Team A 2-2 Team B and Team B would advance on away goals. It’s easier to explain something when you actually understand how it works.

Most football (soccer) fans in almost every country other than the us, they chant for the whole duration of the game, most of them leave the game 'voiceless' and it's just a normal thing to happen... Some games it even happen to the away team being so much better than the home team, that the away fans can be heard much more than the home fans... And it's a real passion for the team in questions..

I think a big difference between the US games and the Europe games is the number of away fans. When you've almost no away fans, you've no one to bait, no one to jeer, no one to jeer at you.... there's just no feedback loop. There's also the fact that there's a HUGE amount of history between the areas - usually involving blood. That has warped into friendly rivalry. While in America, unless you're going to start picking teams that were on either side of the cotton picking industry there's very little history.

At every football stadium in Europe at least, a team has an away end which takes up a small minority of the crowd (in a rubbish area in the stadium). So the two teams are separated. I think it helps stop riots and helps travelling fans the ability to chant, enjoy the game & mix with their own supporters.

5:22 Just for everybody wondering: The stadium is supposed to do exactly that. It was designed with the knowledge in mind that people will just jump around - often in unison. This is the "Deutsche Bank Park" in Frankfurt am Main. A club that was able to get 35k people into Barcelona (~1.400km) and highjack an away game lol You have to worry when people are doing something like this and it DOESNT move. Because that means it to rigid for the way its been used and will break pretty fast which would be an catastrophy.

Here in The Netherlands we have a stadium march whenever we are in a tournament. European or World cup matches. Basically 10 to 15000 people march through the streets to the stadium together. No violence no destruction just a 5 kilometer march party to the stadium of that game. Also you forgot probably the best example why European fans will always win over US fans... Liverpools you'll never walk alone. Experiencing that alone at Enfield is worth the admission price.

Yes footy fans have police escorts 😂It's not as bad as it was in the uk, but it can get a little spicy and violent. Fans used to have pitched battles and 'firms' that went to games with the express intention of fighting.

Malmö FF is a local club in sweden, not a national one. its where Zlatan is from :) Also you need to know that some of those chants are VISITORS. some fans organize clubtravels and takes over a city. sometimes its extremely dangerous because there is a side of the fanclub that also organize dates to fight their rival team... its insane. they are called Hooligans, they can travel anywhere to watch soccer/fotball, but also then go apeshit and fight eachother. worst ive heard in sweden was 100 vs 100 or something like that, but sometimes in stadiums they manage to bring everyone into it, then its a slugfest...

When you asked if that was the country’s national anthem it was the French anthem. The words might surprise you, Arise, children of the Fatherland Our day of glory has arrived Against us the bloody flag of tyranny is raised; the bloody flag is raised. Do you hear, in the countryside The roar of those ferocious soldiers? They’re coming right into your arms To cut the throats of your sons, your comrades! To arms, citizens! Form your battalions Let’s march, let’s march That their impure blood Should water our fields

The roots of football clubs in Europe are imbedded into working class culture. What your witnessing is local and national pride. Since the birth of premier league in England football has changed in some ways for the better. What I can tell you for a fact is that when you are in those stadiums and you witness success and failure you feel it hard. My team just won the treble and I have been smiling ear to ear since. No one can take that moment away. I was there when we won the league and the FA cup. I love football and it is a huge part of my life.

Dont think the change has all been for the better. The quality of football, TV accessibility and safety has improved for the most part. However football has been massively gentrified, far more commodified, near completely monopolised, has become a political vehicle/economic “diversification” opportunity for petro-states and is being taken over by kleptocrats/investment bankers (same thing). Ticket prices are a joke. Crowds and atmospheres are generally worse. English football’s (and now Saudi) financial power is a nightmare for 99.99999% of European clubs on a competitive level. UEFA are self serving, corrupt bastards, (always has been but 30 years ago they weren’t allocating just 40% to the fans at cup finals). The FA aren’t much better. I know most things have been great for City in the last decade, other than ticket prices and general gentrification. And as a Liverpool fan I’ve been lucky to have a season ticket and watch us be so successful in recent years, but I reckon football’s proper on its arse. Its financially, politically and ethically unhinged; and I think the general match going experience has declined in many ways, for all levels of club.

Home Field advantage works different in soccer. In the NFL you have a clear advantage if your fans are loud while your opponents offense is on the field, in soccer all you can achieve is moral support.

4:40 "They're exuding as much energy as the players" That's kind of the crux of it really. The supporters (and I make a distinction between supporter and fan) believe that players will match their energy levels. I was part of a group of Ultras for a while, and when the team was struggling, the capos (the guys leading the chants up front) would scream at us to increase the volume and the intensity of the chants, and you can see some players react to that and find that extra gear when needed. It's also why these guys have such a strong connection with the clubs - they don't just sit there and clap, or buy merch, they're participating in the match indirectly for 90+ mins. I would always lose my voice by the end of the game and I've got scars on my ankles from hitting the bleachers when we run down for goals or during certain chants where chaos erupts. On top of that, those flags and tifos (the large displays with massive banners and sometimes accompanying flares/smokes) are self-funded and made by hand. We would spend week nights and weekend days painting and preparing these, and hours of work would go into each of them. We chartered buses ourselves and organized trips to go support the team away. In a sense, you're putting in a massive effort - which is why those groups are often more critical and vocal towards management, and sometimes to the casual fans.

and @Gabos Reacts - the clubs for Europe: 3:40 - Borussia Dortmund (Germany) 4:40 - FC Koln (Germany) 5:15 - Eintracht Frankfurt (Germany) 5:35 - Ireland national team 6:45 - AC Milan (Italy) 7:10 - FFF is the French Federation logo, so this I assume is the French national team. The stadium is Olympique Marseille's home - called the Velodrome 8:10 - I'm gonna assume that's the Iceland national team, don't recognize the logo but they started this trend 8:25 - Aris Thessaloniki (Greece) 8:55 - Eintracht Frankfurt (Germany) 10:00 - Ajax Amsterdam (Netherlands) 9:25 - Malmo FF (Sweden) 10:10 - Paris St-Germain (France) 10:40 - Romania national team
