Hello! I'm an American on a quest to learn more about history, geography and the universe in general. In this video I take a first look at football (soccer) fans around the world, and I'm shocked at some of them - particularly Greece and Argentina setting the stadium on fire. No way this is legal! This was not fire in the stands but thousands of hand held flares. They are illegal, but organized fans smuggle them inside the stadiums. You were saying about the Fire Marshal, he wouldn't dare shut anything down because there would be a full scale riot. In the US people go to see the games, in Europe and Latin America people go to participate in the games. Players of the home teams consider their fans as the "extra player on the field".

Those fireworks would be more or less everywhere in the stadiums in Europe. It's not allowed in most places and the teams have to pay a lot if it happens in their stadium. It still happens from time to time. I wouldn't consider this as top fans who do that. By the way, don't watch videos about new years eve in Germany if you are shocked by stupid use of fireworks by drunken people. kzbin.info/www/bejne/a5OQYqRseKpsodU Germans are very serious in doing things. Even if it's about blowing up your own city, havoc, destruction and such.

"You'll Never Walk Alone" is from the Rogers and Hammerstein Musical "Carousel". Gerry and the pacemakers were a 60's Merseybeat group who did a cover, and the song became adopted by Liverpool FC. I think this became further imbedded in the club after the Hillsborough disaster, as a memorial for the 96 who died. Borussia Dortmund and Celtic as well as lots of other clubs also adopted the song. I'm not a Liverpool fan, but I did visit Anfield as a kid. Seeing the kop stand, sing and hold their scarfs, made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. It's almost like a religious experience.

I'm biased, but having stood on the Kop since I was 8 in 1978, then sat in various parts of the ground, I can testify, it is a religious experience. sadly, the lack of local fans (not just with LFC) in the Premier League, has reduced the impact somewhat of match day atmosphere.

Also Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur have the same anthem, just replaced the team name in the lyrics, so that's not unheard of. 12:07 Flares are very popular among sport fans in Eastern Europe. I find it interesting watching American reactions to some football celebrations. You ask if they've cleared people out of the way for the fireworks, as though there are officials involved in the 'pyrotechnics'. There are no officials behind this, no risk assessments, etc. it's just fans bringing their own flares and fireworks to the game. It always makes me sad to see American sports stadiums have to put on bands, play music on speakers and get cheerleaders to cajole supporters into doing anything. In most European countries the fans make their own entertainment and the officials just stand watching in despair hoping they don't cause too much damage.

@@henrydauseb2844 Yes, in the second leg of the final, River Plate fans throw rocks and stones on Boca Junior's bus in the entrance of the stadium. Thoose rocks hit and injurie some players, and they moved the final to Madrid in order to Buenos Aires. The first game was 2x2 so was kind a 'One match' final, something that Libertadores addopted nowadays to the final.

Quote from Joham Cruyff, indisputwdly one of the greatest footballers of all time, and revered former manager of Barcelona: There's not one club in Europe with an anthem like "You'll Never Walk Alone." There's not one club in the world so united with the fans. I sat there watching the Liverpool fans and they sent shivers down my spine. A mass of 40,000 people became one force behind their team

The tune of "You'll never Walk Alone" has always traditionally been associated with Liverpool FC - though it's been adopted by others, of course. #9 was "Sailing" by Rod Stewart, which itself was a cover of a Sutherland Brothers written song. The Sutherland Brothers began their career in 1968 as A New Generation, having some success with the single "Smokie Blues Away" (which used a melody based on the second movement of Dvořák's New World Symphony), backed with "She's a Soldier Boy" on Spark. Subsequently with the Sutherland Brothers Band (featuring bassist Kim Ludman[4] and drummer Neil Hopwood), they won a new recording contract with Island Records and put out an album in 1972. Their first single as the Sutherland Brothers Band was under this contract, and was a minor hit, "The Pie", in January 1972. Their follow-up single was "Sailing", which had much radio play but was commercially unsuccessful (it was later covered by Rod Stewart).[3]

The Liverpool song, "You'll Never Walk Alone" is from the Rogers & Hammerstein Broadway musical, Carousel. Liverpool fans have been singing this one for decades and its a spine-tingling experience to hear 50,000 voices singing it at Anfield (Liverpool's stadium). In the 1960s, Liverpool fans also used to sing all the hit songs by The Beatles and other bands of the Mersey Beat. Supporters of Glasgow Celtic and Borussia Dortmund also sing "You'll Never Walk Alone", ironically to the same Gerry Marsden soundtrack. By the way, that fire festival you talk about in the video may be the Burning of the Clavie in Burghead, a small town near Elgin in the northeast of Scotland. The Clavie is a burning barrel of tar which is carried shoulder-high through the streets of Burghead by a selected man called the King of the Clavie. Only a native of Burghead can be the King. It's a Scottish New Year celebration unique to Burghead which dates back to Pagan times before the Julian calendar was reformed. It actually takes place on the 11th January to coincide with the old Scottish New Year. There are other similar Pagan New Year celebrations which occur in some Scottish country towns where selected members of the town parade through the streets ahead of the procession, swinging flaming bales of sticks and straw called a flambeau around their head. Judging by your reaction to the flares at the football grounds, it would probably freak you out, but it is relatively safe. Their purpose is to ward off evil spirits and to prepare for a fruitful year ahead.
