Yes, Ricky Gervais wrote, created and started The Office. It was what launched his career. You showed a clip from a comedy series "Black Books" in the Sandwich segment. I highly recommend you watch it. It is written by Graham Linehan who also wrote the IT Crowd and most famously, Fr. Ted.

The British also invented the World Wide Web . We as British get a lot of crap but we gave the world so much from computers to engines to medicine . I'm proud of my country and so we should be. Briton over 1000 years old, USA born last week (relatively speaking), do the math (or Maths if your British), but joking aside, you "Adopted" many good ideas from another country, something we Brits have been doing for millenia, thats why so many foreign words are legit in the English dictonary. And, yes add another one to the list, you speak English, not American. Keep up the good work and look forward to your next vid.👍

And English itself is a mongrel language, a Germanic language (from Old Norse) mixed with Norman French and Latin, thanks to our many invaders. That's then topped off with words from former colonies, like those that originate from India.

What you have to remember is at the time Ricky Gervais was not very well known and it came after a number of reality TV shows set in workplaces - undercover boss, the call centre - after the first episode of the office people were phoning radio shows and writing to newspapers saying they could not understand how any company could make someone like David Brent a manager.

I think "steal" is not quite correct here. The USA was founded by migrants from various European countries. They were from Great Britain, Ireland, Germany, Italy, etc. Every migrant brought things with them that they knew from their homeland. Even the apple trees for the Applepie came from Europe. Like the horses for the cowboys, for example. Unfortunately, Americans know little or nothing about the history of their ancestors. Furthermore, because many Americans still see themselves and their country as the crowning glory of creation, they have forgotten that many of their achievements are not actually American.

I think the two 'The Office' are slightly difference as the sense of humour is slightly different. I find US humour a little more visual and British humour as not saying the punch line and you having to work it out. But many shows over the years have had a US remake like Stanford and Son and Arche Bunker but the humour changed to suit the US market.
@barrysteven5964
@barrysteven5964 Жыл бұрын
I agree with this totally. I think it's hard to compare two comedies because American and British humour is slightly different although the Americans are catching onto irony better than they used to. I think the main difference between British and American comedy shows is that the American ones rely more heavily on witty one-liners whereas in British comedies it is more the actual situation that is funny. I think the two different Offices aim at their audiences well and actually the American one didn't move as far away from the British one as I thought it would.

There's tons of US shows that were created in UK or Europe first and exported and changed for US audience. You gotta step back and remind yourself that the U.S. as a country is only a few hundred years old which is nothing compared to the age of most other countries. It's still literally a young country. On the flip side I grew up in Scotland watching tons of US shows ... I still love Columbo even though I've seen all of them about 3 times over, also Starsky and Hutch was a favourite, 6 million dollar man, Cheers, etc... so lots of stuff imported from US to rest of world too... also Hollywood.

Welcome to reality. The 'special relationship' is pretty much in the mind of us Brits. Politicians drag it out every now and then but to the average American the UK is just another European country they don't always know too much about. Remember that, although the USA started off as a British colony, nowadays only about 10% of modern Americans are of British ancestry.

Don't feel too bad.. most of these are not - as he claims - British inventions at all and some are just stupid.. like baseball. Britain claims to have created most modern sport just because they were (sometimes) the first to write down formal rules to games that had been around for a long time, but baseball rules were created in USA as an evolution of rounders which is a game that exists in different forms around the world and is still played in many places. Here in Sweden it's called brännboll and it's a very popular game but there are no official teams or tournaments - just friends playing.

This list still annoys me for it's triviality. How about the jet engine? How about the cavity magnetron which forms the basis for radar and your microwave oven. Maybe the modern computer or the http protocol; good old RFC 1945? The annoyance isn't aimed at you btw, but the makers of the original video..

It does but only as a drink. As a solid it's only been around since the early 1800s.

I would say I have somewhat problems with the top three on the list. First off with donuts, just because you have a similar recipe doesn’t make it the exact same thing. I looked it up and every source I have seen has either said the Dutch, British and the Americans claim to have invented the modern day donut. Which probably means the idea have frying dough and giving some sort of sweetness was in play for a long time before being written down in a British cook book. Even then, historians have claimed ancient versions of the donuts were even eaten by the Greeks and Romans. For baseball, you can’t just say that have a couple of guys throwing a ball and another hitting it with a stick is the same thing as baseball. Yes, baseball does have those elements but there is so much more to the sport than what the guy said. And lastly, I can accept that the tune used for spangled banner was a British tune but again the poem/words are all American meaning it’s like a 50-50 split. You can argue either way on this one but I would say that video fails at this claim. Even though, it is a British tune that go along with the lyrics does not mean this entirely British song. Music has been taking other tunes, beats, or lyrics for a long time, even before spangled banner. If you your going to make these claims, the ideas have to be at least above the 50% percent to have come from Britain.

I did watch the video again and I still think these are true. Watch mojo explains these are things that America took that are distinctively British. How I understood that is that 50% of the idea needs to be characteristically from British history at some point. With donuts, doing some research it’s uncertain/fuzzy of exactly where the modern donut could have originate from. While, an ancient version of a donut has been founded to exist during both Ancient Greek and Ancient Roman times. Now with baseball, just because there some basic attributes that came from Britain doesn’t mean Britain created the sport. I need more than that to proof that America took baseball from Britain. It would be like claiming Da Vinci made the first Helicopter, even though is design and idea was to make a flying machine but it first off didn’t work and secondly it’s very much different to how you see helicopters when they were first created. With the national anthem, I did say that it was like 50/50 between American and British but I did say that the song needs to be above 50% written/tune from Britain but this is not the case here. I would say if you are going to keep these on the list they should be at the bottom of it. Watch mojo could have found inventions/ideas that were way more British but they decided on these three because they are some of the biggest American things out there.

If I had to choose a sport to be put on the list, it would be American Football. Football came from Rugby which rugby originated in England. These two are far more similar compared to baseball and cricket

Baseball seems to be based on what we called "rounders". A game mainly played in primary schools.
