I love Tower Bridge. I spent Millennium Eve on it. It was closed to the public and the bascules were open, but me my best friend, a BBC cameraman and literally 4 others were on the south side with us. We had the run of it to ourselves. The Queen waved at us as her boat went by, and when the fireworks began at midnight, we were right in the middle of them. The whole bridge shook, and the air was forced out of our lungs by the pressure waves while we clung to each other with equal amounts of terror and awe. It was amazing.

The jelly with the jellied eels come out of the eels when they are cooked, when it starts to cool down it starts to turn from a liquid into the jelly.

I don’t think the one in Arizona is the original London Bridge, just the previous one.

The Victorian London Bridge was built in 1830 and demolished in the late 1960s as it was unsuitable for modern traffic. The facings of this bridge (not the main structure itself) were fitted to a new concrete bridge at Lake Havasu, Arizona. The current London Bridge was built in the late 1960s / early 1970s. This crossing point was first used by the Romans, who probably built several wooden bridges there. The famous London Bridge (as in "London Bridge is Falling Down") was built in 1209. Wooden houses, shops and a Chapel were later built on the bridge, which became a major shopping thoroughfare. After hundred of years of fires & collapses, it was decided to clear the bridge and widen the roadway, but by the nineteenth century, the ancient structure was in a bad way, so it was demolished to make way for the 1830 bridge.

The bridge also had pride of place in the opening panorama shot to Alfred Hitchcock's movie _'FRENZY!'_

A very interesting video, I love Tower Bridge and have been to London many times, but have only been to Tower Bridge once in 1989. I was working nearby at the time and on a day off I walked across the bridge but there were nowhere near the crowds there that are there now, it was relatively quiet fortunately.

I've only ever been to London twice. I've never seen Tower Bridge, it's iconic and immediately recognisable. I agree with you about the glass bridge, there's no way I'd walk on that. This was a really interesting video, thanks for sharing. Wishing you well 😀

They failed to show the inside of the Bridge, with the great counterweights that drop down into the foundations as the bascule sections rise up. The Bridge only has to raise when a tall ship goes through, which is much more rare now as London does not act as an active cargo port, but most goods are loaded & unloaded far downstream. The Bridge in Arizona is not the original London Bridge, which was built by the Romans 2 thousand years ago. This was rebuilt several times over the centuries, so the one in America is the one built in 19th century. This was replaced in the 1970's by the modern concrete bridge. London Bridge in Medieval times had houses, shops & other buildings all along it on both sides, The spinning thing on the steam engine is a centrifugal balanced relief valve, which stops the steam pressure getting too high, as it spins faster & faster it lets some steam out.

They didn't mention that Aircraft have been flown under the walkways of Tower Bridge only 9 years after the Wright Brothers first flight Mr Frank McClean flew through in his Short-Farman. Alan Pollock flew a Hawker Hunter F6 of 1sqn RAF through at fairly high speed in 1968.
@AxR558
@AxR558 14 күн бұрын
I was going to make a comment about Alan Pollock, his fly through was not sanctioned and caused quite a fuss. He was protesting about the lack of a London flyover to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the formation of the RAF due to defence budget cuts. Before flying through Tower Bridge he also circled three times over Westminster to disturb Parliament.

"TOWER BRIDGE" no "the" it's not required. The first ‘London Bridge is not in Arizona 43 A.D London Bridge history was initially begun in 43 A.D when it was first made by the Romans. The following record of a bridge was 984 when a report was recognized of a widow and her child who had driven pins into the picture of a man. 1014 In 1014, when the Danes held London, the Saxons, under King Ethelred the passive, were joined by a group of Vikings from Norway and led by their ruler Olaf. They both cruised up the Thames to attack the bridge and separate the Danes. 1176 In 1176, the primary stone bridge was constructed under the control of Peter Colechurch. Finished in 1209, this new London Bridge required 33 years to assemble and endured over 600 years. It had a street 20 feet wide and 300 yards in length. It was upheld by 20 curves that bent to a Gothic-style point. 1577 In 1577, Nonesuch House was built to supplant the drawbridge, extending across the bridge with a passage going through it at road level. Paragon House had a structure of wood, some portion of which was transported from Holland. 1623 Fire again destroyed the bridge in 1623. This fire began when a maidservant left a bucket of cinders under wooden steps. 1657 By 1657, entire houses were breaking down. The bridge was extended and partially remodel with a wide focal curve. The bridge stood like this for quite a long time until 1831, when another New London Bridge was initiated. 1825 On June 15, 1825, the main stone was founded by the Mayor of London, John Garratt, within the existence of the Duke of York. 1902 In 1902-04, it was augmented by methods for corbels, expanding the space between the railings to 65 feet and the pathway to 15 feet. 1962 In 1962, it was found that the London Bridge was "tumbling down," sinking into the Thames since it was not sufficient for the expansion in traffic gridlock. 1968 The City of London chose to put the 130-year old bridge up for auction and develop another one in its place. Robert P. McCulloch, the originator of Lake Havasu City, AZ, presented the winning offer for $2,460,000 in 1968. McCulloch spent another $7million to move the London Bridge to Lake Havasu City, which took an aggregate of three years. 1971 The development of a modern bridge over the River Thames harmonized with the destroying of the old London Bridge. The remodel of London Bridge was devoted to Lake Havasu City on October 10, 1971, with numerous British and Arizona government authorities attended this event that drew 50,000 sightseers

The London Bridge in Arizona is the 2nd London Bridge, built 1832, not the "Original" which was built between 1176 and 1209. The present London bridge was built in 1971 when the 2nd was sold.

It isn't the only downriver free crossing built in the late 19th/early 20th. Tower Bridge was first because the City, being the City, paid for it themselves. The ones built by the Metropolitan Board of Works had to get Government money - they were The Rotherhithe road tunnel, the two (internationally unique) Greenwich and Woolwich foot tunnels, the Woolwich Free Ferry and the Blackwall Tunnel. You ought to look at the poor old Blackwall-an engineering marvel in its day it hasn't the glamour of Tower Bridge. Built for pedestrians and horses and carts it now shifts over 50,000 cars and lorries every day. Built as a free crossing for east Londoners it will soon be tolled.

I've walked across the glass floor and found it easy enough, though the majority of people wouldn't go on it. If you want to try it then be aware that there are a LOT of steps to climb to get there. And then the same number to get back down again.

Given how bad the visual effects (and compliance with the laws of physics) are on most of the recreations of the bridge jump, the scene in Spice World where Posh Spice jumps the gap whilst driving the double decker Spice Bus is probably one of the better recreations.

you are right, jellied eels, they didnt out the jelly in, is what the eels, were cooked in, i was fish monger in London for 10 years, we sold plenty, having said that, they want for them is slowly fading away, as the older generation pass, the new generations are not interested in them, No i dont like them, i have tried many times, but could never get away with them, even with malt vinegar and white pepper, these days the eels are imported now, holland i think, but i could be wrong on the country,
