Back when I was at uni, my friend was doing her dissertation on radio comedy, and although he had long retired from TV and was living a quiet life as an antiques shop owner, he accepted her request for an interview. She said he was everything you would hope he would be. He was open and engaging in the interview, and his genuine warmth came through in his gentle tone and friendly manner. She said she was smiling from the moment she met him, and the whole experience felt like an hour-long hug.

That was Ronnie Barker, the big one, and Ronnie Corbett, the little one. They are both sadly no longer with us, but they left a huge volume of work. They started off in the early 60,s in a show called The Frost Report with among others David Frost, John Cleese, and Alan Alder (I didn,t know Alan Alder was in it until I saw an interview with him a few weeks ago!) Ronnie Barker was also a prolific writer, not only for himself and Ronnie Corbett but other people too. He had two other very successful sitcoms "Porridge" and "Open all hours". David Jason from "Only Fools and Horses" was in both of those. The other main actor in Porridge was a young guy called Richard Beckinsale, who died very young (mid 30,s) but had two daughters who both became actresses, you may have heard of Kate Beckinsale!

To explain the "13 Amp" plug thing. In the UK our house electricity works differently than in the US, in a kind of ring system. For safety, in addition to a central breaker, our electric plugs each have a fuse in them, usually rated at either 3Amp or 13Amp. Our supply is 240V, so we use 13Amp fuses mostly for things like refridgerators and microwaves. The ring system is something like a freeway, a big circuit that goes around the house, with exits to each socket. In comparison I believe in the US most things are wired more directly, from the breaker to a socket or maybe a room and back again. The difference is, in a US house, if something shorts that socket or that room goes dark because it trips that circuit only on the breaker box. In the UK, if something shorts it trips the entire house instantly. But importantly, if something shorts in the US, the breaker reacts near instantly because there is a direct path from it to the appliance. But in the UK (without a fuse), if it shorts it takes a little longer because everything is connected to the same line. The difference is like if you have an emergency and need to get home quick, with the US system you work 2 minutes away from home with a straight line route, and with the UK it's like you have to get on the freeway and contend with traffic to get home. It's just a few hundredths of a second difference, but it's enough to make a non-lethal situation lethal. Therefore, UK plugs have a fuse on them so that the connection breaks instantly for the appliance, ensuring safety and preventing further damage to the appliance, and bringing that potentially lethal situation back to non-lethal. Then it trips the entire system a few hundredths of a seconds later, which is okay because everything else in the house is probably safe. The reason for the weird system is that there was a copper shortage back in the day. We couldn't afford to build a new electrical road for every single socket from the breaker, so we (rather ingeniously) created this weird ring system to get as much use as possible from the copper we had while minimising the disadvantages, and until the era of total disposability we taught kids how to rewire plugs and replace their fuses. And additionally to all this, bathrooms have a different type of plug socket because of the presence of water. So you need different plugs for them. But they are connected to the same ring mains, still need plug fuses etc.

Who are the two Ronnies? Well, for context I don't think I'm exaggerating when I say that if a Brit were to ask this they'd likely be met with a very disapproving look, but I know that doesn't help you! They are a British institution in comedy, they were a double act in the 70's and 80's without whom during at least a dozen Christmas's the absence of their special would have been an abomination. Their television programs regularly garnered at least 60% of the population (admittedly there were only 2-3 channels at the time, but still).

If you want funny films, with the two Ronnie's in and other famous British comedy actors, then you should try finding a video "By the Sea" and another earlier one that is very rare that it was last seen on video 30 years ago. Its called "Futtocks End", other funny comedy from the early years of what became modern comedy on TV like monty python, started out here... "Its your move" there is also "Mr H is Late" and "The plank" which goes back to the late 50's early 60's . These types of film brought about the type of comedy that most UK households know about, the "Carry on films" especially the "Carry on Camping" and "Carry on Screaming" as well as "Carry on at your Convenience." being the most well known. 1969 - Monty Python. 1970 early 1980's - The goodies 1980's - "The young ones" and we also had "Only fools and horses" of which the episodes of note are "A touch of Class" which is often mistaken for a "Touch of glass" because of the title font used, "To hull and back" is also a hilarious episode. "Jolly boys outing" always has me in stitches of laughter... and no one can not--not see the really funniest one of all, "Heros and Villians". 1990's - "Bottom" which had Rik Mayall and Ade Edmondson who both played parts in the young ones there was also a situation comedy "Gimmie Gimmie Gimmie" You also have more sketch and fast jokes and gags in "The fast show" "Black Adder", the first series of it can be a bit shaky but series two, three and four are crammed with comedy. If you can, get hold of "Time Gentlemen Please" It is the TV series which kick started his comedy career and the legacy of "The pub landlord" .... There is seriously too many good comedy shows that have been made over the years.

The joke that a lot of people don't get is that a lot of people think billhooks are an imaginary made up thing asked for to wind people up, but as most do not notice or realise that the shop owner is not fazed by the request unlike the assistant (Ronnie Corbett) because billhooks are real things. Ronnie Corbet and Ronnie Barker. The short one was Corbet. This is considered one of the funniest ever done in UK. Alot of the skits etc were written by Ronnie Barker, who also had 2 very successful sit coms called "Open All Hours" and "Porridge". The Two Ronnies shows were a mix of sketches, annecdote stories and a musical number. They often also had a running comedy serial during the series, most famously - The Phantom Raspberry Blower of Old London Town, The Worm That Turned, and Stop Your Killing Me.

They were originally paired up in 'The Frost Report' in the 1960s with John Cleese in a sketch about the classes in Britain. Barker's best comedy vehicle was his 'Porridge' Series. A taster would be 'Prisoner and Escort' which was originally the pilot, but arguably the greatest episode was 'A Night In' which is a two hander with Richard Beckinsale as his cell mate Godber. These are currently on the BBC iPlayer if you have access to that.

Plug: What size? 13 amp. Standard plug fuse size on our 240volts system. The Two Ronnies where essential Saturday evening viewing back in the 70's. Check out Ronnie Barker (the big Ronnie) in 'Porridge' a prison comedy and 'Open All Hours' a corner shop comedy with David (Del Boy from Only Fools and Horses) Jason.

Just watched your reaction to 10 places in the UK and subscribed because, as you said, it's a good thing in these lockdown times to get to watch a mellow film of lovely places - and your reaction was equally mellow and appreciative of the UK landscapes so that helped. I'm Welsh, from and living in Wales, and so it was really nice to see you get to realise it is a separate country (but part of the UK) and be interested in it. Maybe you can find some video similar to this about Wales as, apart from the best flag in the world (a green and white background with a massive red dragon over it), we have our own language, 100 standing castles and 500 ruined ones, one of the World's Top Ten Beaches and a selection of fine beers. And sheep. Lots of sheep. Look forward to catching up on your reactions and seeing more in the future. Four candles...I mean fork handles, is a classic. Try Blackadder, Monty Python, Fawlty Towers, Jimmy Carr, Father Ted and many more for laughs.

This is what I love about the opportunity I’m allowed on the KZbin Platform. I love learning for the first time, seeing for the first time, or experiencing something for the first time. What I enjoy most is the great people I interact with along the way. Tony your comment is why I love reacting and interacting. I appreciate your words and I wrote down the suggestions. Some are blocked maybe I’ll go daily motion and try. I did Jimmy carr recently, My first one so far for him. Monty python splendid idea. Hope you enjoy yourself here and thanks for being here. I’m also Tony, they call me Squirrel, I answer to both just the same. Be well.

@@TheRealSquirrel Yeah, it came across really clearly that you enjoy seeing and learning about new things and interacting with new people from all over the world. Just watching you react to Frankie Boyle and then Peter Kay...but Monty Python is the one that'll take you new places, even if it is 40 years old. Especially the films.
