Many still do, especially pubs, out in the villages and hamlets. There's countless villages around me in Derbyshire and Staffordshire with a single village shop that has odd opening hours, selling bags of coal, gas canisters, sweets, food, everything!

@@sawleyram7405 For many in rural areas. it is supplementary to other work. Here in Ireland it's not unusual to have the pub sell groceries, hardware, occasionally act as the post office and local letting and estate agent. and now, rural pubs are increasingly being fitted out as 'hubs' for remote working and learning.

@@dougoneill7266 Oh yes, I hear you there. A lot of our pubs have resorted to renting space out. I know a shop near Baslow in Derbyshire ran by a farmer (who can't solely survive on the sale of his produce unfortunately). I've only ever been to Ireland a handful of times but remember working in Sligo and called in at some fantastic pubs on the last day. We used to have a sweet shop like that when I was a kid. You could go in and if he had anything new he'd cut it up and let you try it. Ronnie Barker was a legend , he did a few very funny sitcoms as well . He did " Open all Hours " with David Jason ( only fools & horses ) which was funny . But my favourite memories of his was in " Porridge " were he played the part of prisoner Norman Stanley Fletcher which was just comedy genius at it;s best . Doing Porridge in the UK is a term for doing time in a correctional facility .

One of my favourite pubs is The Elm Tree, Orchard Street, Cambridge. Small pub. 10 hand pumps. Lots of Belgian beer. Doesn’t take cards. Mobile phones discouraged. Hopefully it will still be open for business after nearly a full year in lockdown!!!! Anyway. At Christmas time they put bowls of humbugs on the bar. Bar Humbugs. It’s not very funny and it took me a couple of years to get it, but I like it.

We have a box of chocolates here which I hate. They're all similar to those in that box of hard centres, Ronnie C was testing. They're called Quality Street. If you ever watch a video & the person mentions 'Toffee Penny', they come from the Quality Street collection. Most of them are hard centres. The best one in the collection is what's known as 'The Big Purple One'. It's a brazil nut in milk chocolate wrapped in purple plastic. The company started selling a bigger version of it for 50p (around 75c) as it was so popular. Quality Street are no good for people looking after their teeth or people with false teeth.

@kayreeve.author
@kayreeve.author 2 жыл бұрын
Yes that did sound odd saying he's closing when it's morning, yet back in those days, every shop in the UK would close at lunchtime on a Wednesday and spend the afternoon doing stock-take. Known as half-day-closing. Shops would never be open on a Sunday either, Today everyone has long opening hours and even 24/7 without appreciating it. As for the shopkeeper - that's definitely payback for the fork handles lol, and I certainly think he needs a stock take after that!

Years ago, when I first moved to the UK, there were quite a few of these old sweet shops dotted around the London area, there's hardly any left now. With all the modern hygiene laws with open jars of boiled sweets etc.. they've all gone and closed up due to them being banned. Shame. Health and safety gone mad, as the British like to say. Sometimes the olden days seemed much more quaint. My kids have never seen one of these shops, they would have had a field day!

7:19 In the 70's some shops in the UK had "half Day closing" mainly on a Wednesday. This was to give shop owners their workers time off so that they could work n a Saturday, so therefore they would be working 5 and 1/2 days a week . The laws changed in the 1990's so that shops could open on a Sunday/ Saturday or beyond "9-5" hours. so in this case could have been a Wednesday!

First hint of one of Ronnie Barker's most famous characters, the stuttering shopkeeper Arkwright, in the sitcom Open All Hours. Only 26 episodes spread over 8 years (it was aired in 4 of those years). It was brilliant. The show came back after Barker's death with his nephew Granville (played by the great David Jason) from the original series now running the shop. It ran to 41 episodes in 6 series. It was not half as funny as the original and I am not even sure all six series were aired in my country, Australia. I stopped after four or five shows as the same jokes and situations kept coming round and around. Jason had become another Arkwright which was out of character with the original Granville. Barker did the part better

Actually on the subject of comedy from both sides of the"pond" my favourite comedy duo is the American comedians Laurel and Hardy( although Stan Laurel was born in England and went to the USA to become a star) and I was born and raised in Northern Ireland. The fact that I've just turned 49years old a few days ago and my dad has just turned 80 a few days before that and watched Laurel And Hardy at the cinema as a young man is testament how good their comedy was ANYWHERE in the world no matter what generation watched them.

You asked about the shop closing early: In England, many shops used to close for lunch (some still do). There also used to be an "early closing day" once a week (excluding Sundays) usually on a Wednesday or Thursday for the afternoons, usually from 12:30 onwards. In this case, it might, of course, also have been a ploy to get rid of that awkward customer before the shopkeeper finally lost his temper...

Good news travels slower then bad news for sure. We had a place called fraisers news stand. They sold newspapers and a huge candy counter. I don’t know how they lived off selling newspapers and relying on kids for the rest of the business lol.
