This sketch was written by David Renwick, who years later, was responsible for writing the classic comedy series, One Foot In The Grave. In one episode of that series, Victor Meldrew accidentally roasted a tortoise alive in his back garden. I wonder if David was paying homage to this classic sketch when he wrote that into the episode. lol Loving 4 Ronnies Fridays, keep them coming!

I was skriking me eyes out with laughing, gooin from them posh people in t'other sketch to a pair of barmpots who does tha know difference between yon tortoise and a meat pie! Nice one Squirrel a beltin time watchin this, sithee and ta very much fot being a gradely chap. By the way while it is a Yorkshire accent (dirlect) some of it transfers over to Lancashire the neighbouring county too. Yorkshire is the White Rose County and Lancashire is the Red Rose county, for interest there was a war of the Roses in 15th century. The two counties (and the North East) have The Pennines which are a range of hills and mountains between them which are known as 'the backbone of England' Anyhow if tha happens to come up North when tha visits or is owt walkin tha whippets tha can sen fot yerself. @@TheRealSquirrel Although most of us Yorkshire folk, do not have such an old Yorkshire accent now. Also, different parts of Yorkshire have a different take on the Yorkshire accent. For instance, in East Yorkshire (Hull, Scarborough, Whitby etc) we tend to not pronounce 'H's, hence the city of "Ull" & "ello, ow ya doin?" etc lol. The old style Yorkshire accent heard in the Ronnie's sketch, tends to still be heard in the Barnsley area/West & South Yorkshire areas. One of my favorite sayings i picked up in West Yorkshire is "put wood int ole" (close the door) Put the wood in the hole! Lol. My Yorkshire!!! 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇬🇧🇺🇸

Hi again Squirrel. You'll note that even we take the piss out of our own accents. Quite literally, we have so many accents that there is plenty of comedy material. I have a Cockney pal in our pub and we're always imitating his accent for a joke, which he loves, as long as you don't go on forever about it. He then takes the piss out of us, which we enjoy, rather than be disappointed. We just want to laugh, not offend.

RC said "in th'oven" whereas in proper Yorkshire dialect it would be "in t'oven" (with a glottal stop). "Appen" is a Yorkshire word. 1:22 "Sit thee sen down" = "Sit yourself down". Yorkshire dialect often uses the old thou/thee instead of you/you.
@Tilion462
@Tilion462 3 жыл бұрын
Well, there's more than one Yorkshire dialect, and the 2 Ronnie's were mixing 'em quite well here, so there was bound to be some slippage between South & West Ridings (which made up the majority of the sketch) and North & East Ridings which certainly made appearances too...

@susanashcroft2674
@susanashcroft2674 3 жыл бұрын
Yes it does transfer over to Lancashire too. The impersonator Jon Culshaw, who is also good at accents once said the difference between a Lancashire and Yorkshire accent is that the Lancashire accent 'curls up' whereas the Yorkshire accent 'opens out' more. If you think of Fred Dibnah and his Lancashire accent versus say cricketer Geoff Boycott and his Yorkshire accent there is that difference, but equally understandable either side of the Pennines.

The Ronnies would film many sketches in front of a studio audience, then they would distribute them through the series. They made sure they didn't put two shop sketches (or doctor sketches, party sketches et cetera) into the same show. I think the accents were probably treated the same. A Yorkshire here, a Cockney there, a posh one, and so on.

@@TheRealSquirrel The tortoises who died in hibernation (unusually cold winter in 1981/2) were Maggie & Jim. They were named after the prime ministers Margaret Thatcher and James Callaghan, because they made their first appearance on "Blue Peter" on the day of the general election in 1979. (Blue Peter is a high-quality children's entertainment / information magazine programme which has been running regularly since 1958. It has had various pets like dogs, cats and tortoises as a sort-of substitute pet for the children who couldn't afford to have pets of their own. One of the most emotional moments in the history of children's TV in the UK was when Petra (1963-1977) died. There is a statue of her in the Blue Peter garden outside the old BBC TV centre in London).

Let's face it, there are still people in the south of England who would struggle to follow this conversation. All part of the marvellous melting pot of dialects; from a man born in Bedfordshire, England, in 1929, and the other in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1930. I haven't googled it, but this accent is probably not far off being mid-distance between the two.

Those are theatrical “Yorkshire” accents. Since they are not genuine, it is impossible to place them, but I reckon they are somewhere between Wakefield and Barnsley. Corbett especially sounds rather more South Yorkshire than West. There are very many “Yorkshire” accents, but the most usual theatrical one is based broadly on the old woollen district of West Yorkshire. That's where you would usually get “trouble at t'mill”! You will most likely hear “thee and tha-ing” there (they preserve the old second-person singular “thee”/“thou” pronouns, pronounced differently) unlike most of the country. The vocab. is also wider, and you will hear words like “laik” (play) or “whom” (pronounced w-hom), meaning “home”. “Ah'm beh'in' w'hom” means “I am going home”.

I have my wife's grandfather speaking on tape, interesting as he originated from Dewsbury , and the accent is different to Barnsley - where we had friends, and sheffield, where the wife came from. A lot around the Doncaster coalfields were more confusing as they had arrived from wales and the north east for more mining work (sometimes promotion to the deputies and surveyors)
@allenwilliams1306

@@highpath4776 Oh yes, the Barnsley accent is unique, and easily identifiable (I worked there for several years). My grandparents were from the Mexborough/Swinton area, which is not far away from Barnsley, but they spoke differently. I lived in the Huddersfield area for 30 years, again, not far away, but the accent was, also, very different. I studied in Sheffield and there, again, the accent was different. Even Huddersfield and Dewsbury (which are part of the same borough, Kirklees, have slightly different accents, and there are even variations between the outer villages of the Huddersfield area.
