As a South African, I can remember learning this in primary school. We even played a game called General Knowledge, naming, countries with a specific letter from A-Z and we could do it. It drives me nuts when I hear other nations referring to the whole of Africa as one Country. Africa is huge, multiple countries, South Africa in itself has a land locked country within it (Lesotho)

In Germany there's a game plainly named "Stadt, Land, Fluss" (City, Country, River) where a random letter is selected and every player has to come up with one for each category that starts with the given letter. The categories can also be switched out for other things like, "animal" or "historic person" or whatever. It's a nice game to learn trivia.

Exactly, it seems like every country around the world is learning about their own country including the rest of the world except for the US. It does not make sense, then it is really not the people's fault, it is the education system and I suppose what the government wants them to know? I am a bit disappointed in South Africa's education system though, the pass rate used to be much higher, but over the years it has gone down, meaning if you only need 40% to pass, then that means when a student leaves school he has 40%knowledge. To me that is to low. Alot of the subjects taught are also useless, they should revise the system. The kids leave school and don't even know what tax is, what it is for etc

@@taryn-leacarvalho3444 That is indeed the problem with the US education/indoctrination system. Conditioned from birth to believe only what the government wants them to believe; "the US way is the only correct way", and are sheltered from the 'horrors' of other first world countries who have no freedoms! They can't risk the population learning there are better ways of doing things, which aren't driven by profit and exploitation. As you say, the system is to blame. The majority know no better. At least some are taking the time to learn for themselves, after all, they have the entirety of human knowledge literally at their fingertips! Sadly, the conditioned ignorance, arrogance and exceptionalism prevent so many from feeling the need to do so. The system works, in it's intended way!

So you have a special grandson - he's not a normal (British?) child. Europeans live on continental Europe, they're going to know more about Europe just as Americans know more about central America. You could do the same in the UK as in the video by springing questions on the public; and if you live in the UK you will know there are some pretty thick ones around. I remember Radio One doing a spoof quiz in London on the eve of Obama's first election where they asked young people who they were going to vote for the next day.. But all this is not a sign of stupidity but simply a sign of a totally screwed up education system or just a great disinterest in the rest of the world. And I am sure that no matter in which country we find young people who say just as much nonsense because they are ignorant. It always depends on how you cut such a video together. If we go by the definition that English speakers use, we too refer to South America and North America seperately, but there's no Central America. When I was a kid in the 80s, we learned that there are five continents: Africa, America (no split in North, Central and South), Asia, Europe, Oceania. Each ring in the Olympic flag represented a continent. Australia, as well as other countries such as New Zealand, Tuvalu, Samoa, Fiji, was part of Oceania. Things might have changed in 40 years and could be taught differently, but it's very weird to me that Australia alone qualifies as continent today.

Where are you from Danilo. To me Oceania was always a political region not a land mass. You could equally claim Australia is part of Australasia which I think would have more resonance with most Australians but most Aussies think of themselves as just plain Australians, I never met one that called themselves Oceanian or even referenced Oceana - It is just something you see in maps or occasionally hear in politics. Most references to the peoples of Oceania would be to actual Island names. In Australia and New Zealand you hear about the Maoris and Islanders (people from places like Samoa or Fiji). I stick to geology and geography more than political labels. When a nation has had to defend itself from Asians in the North I think eyes keep watch in that direction. Just as Britain does to Europe and beyond.

I mean definitions of "continents" are a bit arbitrary. If we define continents as separated by oceans then there's no Europe or Asia but Eurasia. And it leaves all the islands as either their own continents or something else? If we refer to tectonic plates then divisions appears in the middle of the landmasses, there will be small ones squished between large ones, etc... Saying Australia is it's own continent is not right I think; but it's not the wrongest answer given in this video. Most of Russia's territory lies in Asia but Russians consider themselves as European (and genetic studies shows that most of the Russia population is indeed Slavic from Eastern Europe). Geography certainly WAS compulstory in US schools when I attended, and I think it still is. There is one critical difference between when I attended schools and now: back then students were expected to both learn AND retain the information. Nowadays, it seems if kids learn it at all, it's perfectly permissible for them to forget it the next day and never recall it again. There was a concept of "general knowledge" that we were expected to carry with us through our lifetimes, but that no longer seems to be the case, sadly.

over 50 years ago, in one term time, I had to learn all the States, their Capitals, their National flag (and others if they had them 😉) and the main rivers in South America and I think I could still name most of them on a blank map of all the States now 🤔. We were taught about each state in turn and then had to learn and remember the “facts” about each one, as we would not know what one would be on the test paper in the following weeks - and because the emphasis was on “learning” it meant the information could be retained. The following term year, I studied Australasia! Much easier!! 😃 I might now download a blank map of South America and see how I get on! 😃

It's difficult to understand the lack of education in US! In Sweden young children are more educated than adults in US. I have translated what children learn in school about geography when they are 10-12 years old The teaching of geography should deal with the following central contents: In grades 4-6 Geographical conditions, patterns and processes 1. Introduction to the endogenous and exogenous processes of the Earth, and how these shape and change the landscape. 2. The earth's natural resources, such as water, arable land, forests and minerals. Where on earth different natural resources are located and how people's use of the resources affects the landscape and human habitats. 3. Climate and vegetation zones and the ways in which climate affects human habitats. 4. Characteristics of some natural and cultural landscapes in Sweden, Europe and the world. 5. Name and location of geographical objects in Sweden, Europe and the world. A selection of seas, lakes, rivers, mountains, deserts, regions, countries and cities.¬ Sustainable development 1. How choices and priorities at the individual and societal level can affect the environment and promote sustainable development. 2. Some root causes and consequences of poverty and ill health, such as lack of access to education, health care and water. Work to improve people's living conditions, for example through the United Nations (UN).¬ Methods and tools of geography 1. Digital and analogue maps and their structure with degree grids, colors, symbols and scale. Topographic and thematic maps. 2. Field studies to investigate natural and cultural landscapes. 3. Descriptions and simple analyses of places and regions using maps and other geographical sources, methods, tools and concepts.

If anything, then the name "part of the world" (in Russian "части света" (chastity sveta) ("света" (sveta) is "свет" (svet) in another case)) in Russian does not mean parts of the whole world, we have the word is a little different from a world (just in case, yes, we have the "world" word in Russian, it is "мир" (mir))- "свет" (svet), it means light and is also a synonym for "accessible inhabited world around us", which in essence is Europe and Asia together, so we call them a parts of a "свет" (svet), and also if you add "all white" (ves beliy) to it , then it turns out "весь белый свет" (ves beliy svet) - a direct synonym for the phrase "the whole wide world".

Hey Ryan. Don't feel bad. I've seen street quizzes like this done on the people of London and they aren't any brighter - the video makers just cherry pick the dumbest. For example Radio One (the biggest BBC radio station for young people) asked the young people of London in 2008 who they were going to vote for in the US Presidential Election - just about all of them said they were going to vote for Obama! I lived in the US and the UK. There's a lot of smart Americans out there.. Who took us to the moon? I've said the following here before: most Britons can't tell you the proper name of their own country first or even second attempt, I've tried it on them, lots can even tell you at all.
@seanthiar

I'm not young anymore, but if someone would ask me that question about the presidential election in the USA I would simply assume they want to know who I would vote for if I would live there and that the interviewer are not able to formulate their question in the right way. And I would answer that assumed question, because the formulated question by the interviewer is just stupid and makes not sense to ask. BTW - who took us to the moon - Scientists, not a country and the lead scientist was a German rocket scientist Wernher von Braun and without Margaret Hamilton (USA) they would have crashed, because her emergency programs stopped the lander from crashing on the moon.

@@seanthiar I think thou doest assume too much Seanthiar. The question was presented in a way as to be unambiguous. You would need to hear it for yourself. I find it very frustrating when people are so stupid as to answer a question they presume the questioner wants to hear instead of the actual question. I guess you fall into that class. Also, if it was an American who saved the moon program.. how does that show that Americans are dumb? Doh!

To be fair, the EU does probably look like a country from the outside if you aren't looking too closely; we share a flag, a parliament, and many members share a currency, an we share open borders in many cases. Once you know where you are, it becomes clear that we are all still different countries, with our own cultures, languages and flags, and we wouldn't have it any other way. This is the fantastic thing about the EU; we get the best of both worlds...

While connected, there are geographical boundaries between Europe and Asia, and 'Eurasia' and Africa. Its more than just political and cultural borders, rather, those borders are closely related to geographical borders. Geological, Europe and Asia are mostly on the same tectonic plate, Africa is not, and some prominent parts of Asia (specifically India) are not.

@@trifemaster They are currently colliding, that does however require them to be separate entities. The United Kingdom is an interesting one for sure. It is a union consisting of multiple countries, which have some level of autonomy within the union, and their own identity and often own language, so there is a good argument for not calling the United Kingdom a country, but rather a union. In that the United Kingdom is more similar to the historic 'dual monarchy' of Austria-Hungary than to many modern nation states.
