Back in the day a drawn grand final had to be played again the next week, now they do extra time after the 2010 one

Some context for these are needed, and all of this is from memory. #10. You nailed it. Kick after the siren to send Hawthorn into the Preliminary final, and Geelong onto a long summer holiday. Isaac Smith missed the kick after the siren, Hawthorn lose, Geelong goes to the Prelim. #9. 2012 Grand Final. Hawthorn were favored to win that match. If I remember right, Nick Malceski was the person who kicked the first goal of the Grand Final. He kicked the last as well, allowing Sydney to win. More on Sydney shortly. Making it more controversial, was that Lance Franklin was playing for Hawthorn at the time. If I remember right, Hawthorn went on to win the 2013 Grand Final, and the week after that, Franklin announced that he was leaving Hawthorn to play for Sydney. #8. During the early 2000s - 2001 to 2003, Brisbane had won the Grand Final 3 years in a row. Prior to this, they had only made it to the preliminary final once, as the Brisbane Bears, in 1996. in 1997, they merged with the Fitzroy Lions to become the Brisbane Lions. This was the second time they had ever made it to the Grand Final, against Collingwood, so this was 2002. They would go on to win this one, and then face Collingwood again in 2003. #7. West Coast versus Sydney, 2006 Grand Final. This was the rematch of the 2005 Grand Final. I'll get to that one shortly. Sydney won the 2005 Final, but this one was even closer than that, because as you can tell, a single point can be the difference between winning, losing, or drawing. West Coast won this one by a single point. #6. Elimination Final, Hawthorn versus Adelaide. Again, at this time, Franklin is playing for Hawthorn. That last kick put the Hawks in front with a few seconds left, and became iconic for him having the Hawthorn fans behind him as he kicked that goal. #5. In the finals series, if the scores are even at the end of regulation, like in the AFL, you go to overtime. This is what happened not once in the game between Port Adelaide and West Coast, but TWICE. So this happened right at the dying seconds of a 2nd overtime. Port Adelaide gave away a free kick, siren sounds, and the goal is kicked. If I remember right, this was an elimination final as well, so another kick for goal after the siren. You heard the crowd go all but silent; that is because this game was played in Adelaide. #4. 2009 Grand Final. At this time the 4 teams with the longest droughts between winning Grand Finals were Footscray/Western Bulldogs, St. Kilda, Melbourne, and Geelong. I want to say it was in that order as well. St. Kilda had it the worst, because they have only won 1 premiership in their entire existence as an AFL team. They lead this match, and all they had to do was pick up that ball and run. the fullback, Matthew Scarlett kicks it off the ground into Gary Ablett Jr.'s hands, and the rest is history. Geelong end their drought, and more heartbreak for St. Kilda. #3. the 2010 Grand Final Replay. As already mentioned, back at that time, if the scores were tied in the Grand Final, THERE AS NO OVERTIME. They would come back the following week and play all over again. In this case this is what happened. This is the first quarter of the replay. Nick Riewoldt gets the ball, easy stroll in and shot at goal, and has the ball smothered/blocked right on the line. This play has been called "The Smother of the Century". That set the tone for Collingwood for the rest of the day, which ended up winning against St. Kilda, further extending their heartbreak. Along with that was clips of the actual 2010 Grand Final. Collingwood had lead all day until Lenny Hayes kicked the ball to the top of the goal square and Brendan Goddard took that mark. The goal he kicked put them in front for the first time that day. Fast forward to where the ball bounces away from Stephen Milne, tying the scores. You see what happens at the final siren, where no-one knows what to do, because scores are tied. No winners or losers. It had only happened 3 times in the entire history of the AFL.. 1954, 1977, and 2010. After 2010, they changed the rule. #2. 2005 Grand Final, and back to Sydney. At this point in time, the Swans were originally from South Melbourne, when the AFL was started. They had won the Grand Final only once in their existence as well, back in 1933. At the time of this game, they had the longest drought between premierships: 72 years. They had made the Grand final in 1996, and lost, but hadn't won it. This was the last play of the match, as they were ahead against West Coast at the time. That mark and the call of that mark is as famous as the call as the siren sounded that the longest premiership drought in football history was over. Obviously this leads into #7, and created a rivalry, because Sydney would play West Coast in the Grand final the following year, which West Coast won. #1. 2005 Elimination Final, Sydney versus Geelong. Geelong were favored to win, and lead all day. Nick Davis came in during the last quarter and kicked 4 goals, in which the last one was kicked with 3 seconds left on the clock. That last goal gave Sydney the lead, and sent them into the preliminary final, which they played St. Kilda, and won, sending them into the 2005 Grand Final, which was at #2. This one was a hard one for Anthony Hudson - the commentator - to call, as he is a die hard Geelong fan. But he got major props for remaining neutral in this.

More context to #10. Plus, Geelong and Hawthorn hate each other. And, now Isaac is at Geelong 😆 Also, GREAT context. Your notes are great. But, I do have to correct you re prem drought. We broke it in 2007.

This is what you need to know when there is a draw in a game: Regular home and away games: each team gets 2 points each and leave the game as it is Finals: two 5 minute overtime quarters will be played Grand final: a re match will be played a week later

In the 2010 Grand Final they replayed the match the next weekend until someone won and Collingwood won their 15th flag.

There’s only ever been 3 drawn grand finals in history, they used to replay them the following week, now it goes into extra time

That draw was the Grand final. They played again the next week and Collingwood won. I think they changed the rules now and if it happened again in the finals it goes to overtime

You should look up the after the siren kick of Tony Lockett ( Sydney swans ) v’s Essendon from 60 meters to it was the 1996 preliminary final that sent the swans into their first grand final since 1933

He definitely should. I remember that one distinctly well; I was at it. Was my second time at any AFL match. Unfortunately I missed the Grand final the following week as I had to fly back to the US. The week I got back though, they showed this very match on our 1-hour highlights show so I got to see it again. We did get the GF.. a week later. But Plugger's Point was a nail biter!

You should react to Buddy Franklin, best goal kicker of the 21ST century

For the honorable mentions: #1. 2016 Grand Final. Western Bulldogs versus Sydney. As I mentioned before, as Sydney broke their drought in 2005, the Bulldogs had the record for the longest drought. It had been 62 years since they won, and 20,090 days since their last appearance in the grand final. They were not favored to win this one, as they finished 7th for the year. no team had ever won the Grand final after placing 7th. They won their elimination final, and had to travel again to play their semi final, travel again to play their preliminary final, just to get to the Grand Final. Sydney won their qualifying final, had a week off, won their preliminary final, and were odds on favorites to win. However, Lance Franklin was carrying an injury with him this day. The Bulldogs had come from a world of hurt at this time. at the end of the previous season, favored players retired, their coach was fired, and their captain left the club to play for GWS. In trade to get the former captain to GWS, the Bulldogs acquired Tom Boyd. Bob Murphy reluctantly became the captain, as he was already an inspirational leader. 5 rounds into the year, he tears his ACL, requiring knee replacement surgery, so he was out for the year. they went on playing; when they got to their preliminary final, they ended up playing GWS. so it was a hard final because two players were playing against their former teams, which a trip to the Grand Final was on the line. As you can tell, the bulldogs won. Boyd kicks the goal in the Grand Final, which was a big story. The bittersweet part of this is that to be a premiership player and get the medal, only the players playing get the medal. Bob Murphy, who went through all that turmoil, missed out, so while he played during that year, he doesn't get the medal. The coach did invite him up to not only hold up the premiership cup, but gave Murphy his medal. #2. Qualifying final in 2006. Again, Sydney versus West Coast. What made this one amazing was that after he kicked that goal, Michael O'Loughlin got into the faces of the West Coast Eagles fans. This was played in Perth, at Subiaco Oval, which was West Coast''s home ground at the time. Fate had it that they would meet again in the 2006 Grand Final. #3. Brisbane v. Carlton, 2002 Qualifying Final. I believe that one goal from Daniel Bradshaw sent Brisbane into their first preliminary final since 1996 as the Brisbane Bears. It was in the dying seconds of that game, and put the Lions in front by a point.

In the regular season a draw is just a draw, the teams split the four points and get two each. In the finals they have extra time which consists of two five minute half’s in the draw you saw in this video was a draw in the Grand Final which meant the two teams had to come back a week later and play the entire game again from the start. The rules have since changed where a draw in the Grand Final will mean extra time

You would have to react to the worst sport in Australia and possibly the world. Only sport in the world where if you miss a goal they give you a point for it 🤦♂🤦♂🤦♂
