British TV does NOT use laugh tracks- most of them are done in front of a live studio audience, with any sections that cannot be done live shown on a screen- but the laughter is REAL and in the moment!

Watch the Morecambe & Wise skit with American Conductor André Previn, it's hilarious. All the funnier because he flew over to Britain to do the show and learned his lines in the back of the Taxi on the way to the studio. He carried it off superbly, you would have thought he had rehearsed for days, a sheer genius & a joy to watch.

Ultimately, a ‘Top Ten’ is simply too brief a list to compile, not to mention damn near impossible - there are simply too many stand-ups artists, sitcoms and broader comedy shows to name (I think what she was aiming for here was underrated UK comedy proponents that most if not all US audiences were least likely to have heard of - still, it really doesn’t explain the inclusion of the ruddy Krankies)

The standout here is Victoria Wood. Brilliant, funny and irreverant. Gentle observational humour with barbs. She did everything from standup to sketch shows to situation comedy right up to and including drama. All successful and mostly, if not all, written by her. It's as if she knew she wouldn't have enough time here to fit everything in. Her book of jokes is text book for many comedians on how to write humour. Comedy got a bit less funny when she was taken from us much too soon. The only other comedian whose death affected me as much was Paul O'Grady, either as himself or as Lily Savage. I was also shocked by this but someone pointed out that it was actually a list of British comedians most Americans wouldn’t have heard of, not top 10 legends as per reaction title

Harry Enfield was my fav from that list. He did so many sketches that wouldn't see the light of day these days.

First time I saw anyone bring up the Krankies in the comedy context after it came out they had swingers parties.

So that's why I haven't heard about them for years. I didn't know about the 'swinging '.

Sarah Millican, Rhod Ghilbert, Greg Davies, Frankie Boyle, Kevin Bridges, Lee Evans, Michael McKintrye, Ricky Gervais - I mean there are SO many good British comedians - and these are just the stand ups. Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders. (RIP) Caroline Aherne, (RIP) Paul O Grady, Adrian Edmonson, (RIP) Rik Mayall - so many general British comedians too.

Did an expand and find for Caroline Aherne and this was the only comment I could see. Absolute genius writer who really ought to be much more famous.

@@vurogj that really is a shame, Mrs Merton was fantastic - and a bit a trailblazer in the interviewing guests with questions that were a bit more naughty than they sounded at first arena. And The Royle Family, absolutely genius writing.

@@JJLAReacts I suspect there was a bit of a clue because Victoria Wood actually passed away almost a decade ago - and as she didn't mention that, she was clearly still alive when that video was filmed.

The best British comedian IMO is Sean Lock. If you haven’t seen Eight out of Ten Cats does Countdown you should watch! I also love Greg Davies, Dave Gorman, Lee Mack, David Mitchell and Jimmy Carr! RIP Sean Lock - what a legend.

Mitchell and Webb, Goodness Gracious Me, Armstrong and Miller are all sketch shows worth watching. For panel shows would I lie to you, have I got news for you are long running. For improv we brought you Whose line is it anyway. You want surreal, the mighty boosh. Taskmaster is ours. So many from the last 30 years.
