The blimp actually wasn’t a blimp but more of a zeppelin with steel [edit: aluminum] construction inside as a skeleton to keep the hull in shape. A blimp is more kind of a ballon who keeps his shape by the pressure of the gas inside. And the zeppelin that should have been built in this hangar was very large and was designed to carry large cargo weighing up to 160 metric tons. It was therefore called Cargo Lifter.

I was about to write something similar. The CL160 was planned as a semi-rigid airship. Without such an extensive interior framework as, for example, a Zeppelin - but definitely not a blimp.

Yes, this thing is huge. For the Americans to compare. Your largest aircraft carrier, the "USS Ford", fits in completely. But then you can still place a Tico-class cruiser to the left and right. And next to that you can place a Burke-class destroyer on either side. In some weather conditions, clouds even form inside. Well, this year we're going on a short vacation again in one of the modern houses there.

I'm from Germany and let me tell you: I was more than 10 times in the tropical islands resort and every time I love it more. There are every year new attractions like the new "Amazonia" area. But the best was, is and will be forever the insane rainforest. You can walk there without shoes because the ground is warm and you can see a lot of (mostly never seen before) exotic plants and butterflies and birds. It's so interesting. I can walk around there for hours. And yes it's not that much environmentally friendly (you need a lot of energy to keep the building and everything inside like the water warm) but it's better than all the visitors (1.1 million) would fly to middle America or Hawaii or Fiji Islands. And often the people visit the resort for only a few days, so they can have vacation more times in a year. That's fantastic! Greetings 😊 Resi

Been there once a few years ago. It is really really huge! The huge hall was originally built for cargo zeppelins but the company went bankrupt. i've been there twice (due to corona and not beeing able to fly away for holidays) and it's quite fun, BUT it can be awfully loud with all those people, the airing system and the rushing water... but it's bearable when you have fun. first time we slept in one of those indoor tents because it was winter and i couldn't fall asleep despite beeing exhausted because of the ventilation noises. the 2nd time we went in summer and rented a big tent on the camping site and it was wonderfull and fun... they also have an outdoor area with pools, slides and greens for sun bathing and playing. so it's a nice place but since i'm quite sensible when it comes to noise i prefer open/outdoor places.
@mariahoelzel3872
@mariahoelzel3872 Жыл бұрын
Oh, I would like to go there, but now I read that and I can imagine that it might be loud. Maybe in future they will find a way to cancel the noise. The surface of the building might be to smooth. Usually in big rooms there are hanging barriers from the ceiling, that the energy of the sound is reduced and there is no echo. Or there might be the possibility to create "anti-sound". Would be nice if it was quiet there with some "natural" noises.

That hangar was built in 2000 by Cargolifter AG. The Cargolifter project was started in the mid 1990s by the VDMA (Verband Deutscher Maschinen- und Anlagenbau / German Mechanical Engineering Industry Association) with the intention to build an airship able to transport heavy and bulky plant components like large turbines for hydro power plants in remote regions, large car body presses and so on. The company failed in the end, partly due to project management mistakes (they started with developing the most difficult part, the air crane which should enable the airship to pick up and lower down its cargo without landing - the difficulties they experienced with that ate most of their 300 Mio. Euro assets, while they had still no products in the line which could earn a bit of revenue in the near future, and after the dotcom bubble bursted they couldn't get no fresh money anymore). The hangar was planned to house several Cargolifter CL160 Airships (260m length, 65m diameter); it is therefore 360m long, 210m wide and 107m high. It was sold in 2003 to the Malaysian Tanjong trust.

The story behind the hangar structure itself is crazy on its own. It was originally built to house the "Cargolifter" a project where they wanted to build a giant modern airship for commercial transportation. Only a small scale prototype was built before the company went bust, but there was this hangar... They made large sections of the walls transparent to let in light when they converted it to the tropical island resort.

One of the main reasons Tropical Island exists is the German weather. Three months of autumn with gray skies and no sun, four months of dark winter with little daylight, three months of spring, which is still cold, - and 2 months of summer. (July/August). In the past, summer was often rainy, so you could not go to the beach. The last three years, on the contrary, sometimes so hot and dry (heat waves from Africa) that it was too hot for outdoor activity.

Ahw, that is one of the biggest failures in our local and more recent history. (I personally only live an hour away by car. ) They wanted to build zeppelins as a more environmentally friendly means for transportation of cargo over long distance. Unfortunately the zeppelins they could have built there wouldn't have been able to fly high enough to cross any mountains (the alps) and would not have been able to cross huge bodies of water either. There was some sort of scandal involved.. but I'd have to look it up as all of that has happened quite a while ago. I think that ownership changed a few times before it was finally modeled into the water park/hotel it is today. And before anyone asks, I've never been inside to visit. But my dad is a graduate engineer and went to see it when it was still a construction site in order to oversee some of it as he had done some of the calculations necessary..

But there were to many people for my liking, the waiting time for the slides was very long. It was a great experience (just like visiting Disney land for example) but I rather go to my local pool where the slides are great too but I don’t have to wait as long and it’s much cheaper so you can go more often.

That hangar was originally built by a company called Cargolifter. They tried to bring back the days of the Zeppelin for cargo shipping. Their goal was to built Zeppelins that could lift up to 160 tons. But the company was a big desaster from the beginning. Instead of hiring expert engineers they mostly employed young engineers fresh from university and their first prototype later turned out as a standard product of a British blimp manufacturer. Their investors soon got impatient and stopped further funding. But they did one good thing in their six years that the company was in business. Building the biggest self-supporting building in the world. You can open both of the rounded ends and have planes fly through it. And just one year after they went bankrupt this water park bought the land and the hangar. Fun fact: To prevent condensation under the roof and therefore indoor rain and mold the walls have to be constantly blown dry with hot air. So in that way it really is a hot air balloon. Just only a half one that is anchored to the ground.

This is a symbol of what went wrong in Germany the last 30 years. At the beginning of the 90s, Germany was leading in future techs like photovoltaics, wind power, maglev trains or airships. All of these projects were abandoned. China is the world leading power in solar and wind energy, and Japan builds a new maglev Shinkansen that will go at 600 km/h, while Transrapid was never built in Germany because it couldn't be operated on existing rails. Well, and the Cargolifter airship hangar was converted into a water park.

Long time ago we've been there with my little daughter. We stayed inside the buildung for one week and slept on benches at the beach. I'm not sure if this is still allowed or if you have to sleep in some accomodation thing. But back then there weren't much of this accomodation (non outside, only a few inside). You had to pay one entrance fee and then 3€ each night (which was 0€ the first year after opening). Sleeping inside a public swimmingpool was just fun with all those people around you.

The Cargo Lifter project was an idea to build a huge airship to transport up to 200t of cargo directly to the target-place. Looked nice in the first place but building that is to expensive and it never took off. Afterwards it looked more like an investor scam than a real project. The fact that they finished the hangar is actually surprising and that it could be used for this kind of resort even more. There is another huge resort using a very expensive nuclear power station that never went into operation. It's called "Wunderland Kalkar". This is when recycling goes big in Germany.

I was there once and since then, they've added a lot of stuff. All that greenery, for example, wasn't there yet when I was there, at least not in that amount.

Ryan one day you just have to come to germany with your family...and visit all these places...I´ve been there 3 times and it´s just amazing...my kidslove this place and always want to go back there...and they have not even shown the water slides and the outside aera you can use in the summer as well :D, oh and the "one at a time" thing would not happen here even if someone twists their ankle because the person would not sue the resort because of that (maybe becasue of universal health care they don´t get bancrupt to fis that ankle) and with that give the comapny the possibility to not have to regualte the sliding process, because noone sues them...I love the freedom over here ;), I liove the comparison with the marble toy coaster thing...I had that as kid as well andthe comparison fits :)

I´ve been there twice. The first time when the company Cargolifter tried to build gigantic air ships there and the second time when it already was "Tropical Island". I was impressed both times.

I didn't have a marble coaster?! But ... 1. There was a store on my way home from school. They had a huge one, but not with marbles, but little penguins, that slided down. Sometimes i was allowed to play with it. And 2. We had easter egg rolling. At easter we would go to a little hill and roll the eggs down the hill, whos egg was first, won. Because this hill was used since years for that, there were gullies. And we builded longer paths with bork and many other things. It was fun.

For watterslides I would search for Therme Erding. It has the most Slides and they are pretty cool, in summer there are some additional ones oppen that aren't closed off in a hall.

You used to be able to rent the whole place as a location for filming, photoshoots and the like, but a few years ago a German horror movie was shot there and they went so overboard with the motion picture blood that "a significant part" of the beach had to be replaced. Since then they pretty much don't rent the place out anymore.

We've been there 6 or 7 times now. Usually when they offer special discounts (normal prices are just too much ^^). It's impressive driving towards it. We slept once inside, but usually we stay outside, as it is a lot cheaper.

It was originally intended to be the hangar for the large airship Cargolifter, which was designed for heavy transport. Sad that it failed due to engineered funding issues.

If you visit Berlin, take a day off in that place. It is not too far away. In winter the air is a bit chilly (18-20°C), but with enough warm towels or clothing you can quickly put over your swimwear, it will be fine. And avoid weekends and school holidays..
