CAFE is nowhere near that simple, and in fact, CAFE standards are based on a complicated average of all the miles driven by all the vehicles a manufacturer sells. which means the more tiny efficient cars they sell, the more big gas guzzlers they are allowed to sell. so CAFE rules are better used to explain why every seller in America has an electric car on the market. but while I didn;t find documentation, my understanding is that footprint is based on wheel position, which would partially explain why wheels are being pushed closer to the corners, and overhangs are getting smaller. but the primary reason for that is that bigger wheelbase gives a better ride, and doesn't put wheelwells in the middle of the cargo space.

@Anson_AKB3 ай бұрын
yes, and that weight is the max total weight, not the actual current weight that the car/truck has while "just driving around" solo and without cargo. And thus quite a few "big american cars" are considered to be "small european trucks" with quite a few additional restrictions concerning license and use of the car/truck. Until "some" years ago, the limit was 7.5 tons for the normal car license, which still applies to my license as "grandfather ruling". And when the UK had a shortage of truck drivers after Brexit, they tried to convince older resident Europeans to change jobs and drive a truck, but i wonder why successfull older bankers and housewives wouldn't take that offer, LOL

@@kenbrown2808 TLDR : a truck plus trailer of 70 feet (21.3m) total length would generally be illegal in germany, no matter which type of license the driver has. in more detail : Driving licenses in germany have different classes for motorbikes, cars, trucks, buses, etc, and thus many of the big "private trucks/suv/etc" would be illegal to drive in germany with a normal car (up to 3.5 tons total weight) license. And also the max length of trucks is different depending on details and type, but usually only 16.5m (54 feet) for semis and 18.75m (61.5 feet) for trucks with trailer (that's one of the reason why european trucks rarely have a "nose" which takes away from that max length). Max weight for trucks is 40 tons (in some cases up to 44 tons). Special longer and heavier trucks with permit on a case by case basis are possible, and also "long-trucks" which may be up to 25.25m (83 feet), but only on some predetermined subset of the entire road network.

So if you want a decent trailer load of about 1000kg total haul, then the car (inkl load, you, petrol, etc) can not exceed 2500kg. In the US I think, you do not have any limitations at all? @@jattikuukunen Which one? If you're talking about the number in this video, then it's really simplified and shouldn't be listed as a single number, but rather a range because it depends on the final configuration of the vehicle. It's not just US vs EU. Look at a modern compact car compared to a 30-year-old upper middle class car. It looks bigger, but put them side by side. A T1 VW bus is narrower and only about half a meter longer than a modern Polo. An adult can barely fit behind the wheel of a Polo, and tradesmen drove all their stuff to the construction site in a T1 bus. In the city, trucks are required to drive on the right, which used to be quite easy, but today you need half the width of the tires in the left lane to avoid shaving the mirrors.

Also, the shorter wheelbase makes them so much more maneuverable. And loading is easier if you can just shove it in, and not have to lift cargo up/down.

Plus rear wheel drive which gives it the smallest turn circle ever.

In addition to the door thickness there has to be extra empty space on both sides to deploy the mandatory side airbags. The change between the late 90s (golf mk4) and the 00s (mk5) is very clear.

In the UK, it would be less common for a family of 4+ to have a Clio or similar as their main car, they're more usually owned by singles or couples, or as a second car in a family. A Skoda Octavia estate is about as big a vehicle as any family of 4 or 5 could reasonably need - I'm shortly going to be heading to France for a week's holiday with 4 adults in one, and we're not going to have any trouble fitting all of our stuff in.

The base price for a Duster in UK is $26k not €12k due to car tax + VAT. US drives stupidly large vehicles because petrol is cheap if you paid European petrol prices you'd start buying more economical vehicles.
@martinconnelly14733 ай бұрын
Manufacturers push large vehicles because they can get people to pay for the empty space inside a vehicle. Not much more metal but a lot of space means that a big price for a big vehicle looks reasonable to the average buyer. If you look at the Ford F350 versus the Fiat 500X the Ford weighs about the same as 2 Fiats and costs about the same as 2 Fiats so selling a F350 probably earns Ford twice the profit a 500X size vehicle would get. The factory and labour costs are probably similar whatever size vehicle is being assembled. I suspect the listed cost of the Ford is also short of point of sale taxes.

They're ideal for short-distance trips and the new models have great aesthetics compared to the older models, but if you go for top-of-the-line equipment levels the price per car will rise between 18.000 - 25.000 Euros, depending on the model (newly built). I used to drive them a lot at my previous job and I've got pretty familiar to how they handle.

Let's not forget that Europe has history and a lot of old buildings (that took up space to build) so that's why we don't have as many big cars as the Americans. This brings us to the next logical conclusion: since there were so many old buildings and cities, each one of it having a different architecture and different landscape in a smaller space, we as Europeans developed a different city planning that will have to be updated to keep up with the times. But in the past, this wasn't the case, streets weren't meant to be full of big vehicles and of course there cars took the scene much later. Here we had wagons, rode horses, used them for work, some countries used donkeys for this while others used oxes, especially for agricultural purposes. That was all people had, carriages were also used for transportation but usually the rich or the nobility used these. Think of this was more like a limo for that period. These were all the vehicles there were on the streets. Trams appeared later in the cities but this was still before cars appeared and they're still used as a public transportation method here on the continent. That was all the space you needed. I know that what I said here is known by everybody, but the point is that if you were to make place for cars in our city cities, you'd have to demolish monuments, castles, rebuild bridges and nobody wants this so we have to deal with this. The history, the old architecture, the nice walkable streets and the pleasure of taking a walk either for fun or as a retreat from the sunshine during the summer heat or for socializing makes this cities charming. And by the way our cities become bigger too, they expand and start to have all of the modern amenities one would need these days: houses, kindergartens, schools, hospitals, clinics, eateries, insurance companies, EMS, police, fire dept, bus stations and many others you can think of and of course the infrastructure is being built, people from the rural areas are starting to move to towns or to larger cities (the retired ones are sometimes the ones moving back to the countryside or to more quiet places). So urbanization is real, it's happening in Europe too, it's not something exclusive to the USA, the streets become larger, fit for cars and public transportation, so new neighborhoods are being created and these places are usually used by youths and young families, you can buy apartments, houses, in some areas even mansions. I saw some of these areas but to me they're soulless, it's mostly all concrete besides the parks and the children playgrounds, there's almost nothing to them. Mostly all is built for working, driving back and forth home and that's quite it. There needs to be some kind of creativity in these areas because otherwise they're all going to be bland. History and old buildings, monuments, museums are all nice and fine but there is and it will still be a need for some new ones, for new types of arts and expression to make it interesting, don't just add gyms and shopping centers ... add some lakes, some nature, some bike lanes, throw in some forests, add some animals too ... really. I would like to see America (especially the USA) start to use their space better, to make it less congested to traffic, to remove the guns problems but for this to happen, it needs strict laws to be put in place and applied and real life tests for guns to be required for every single person. The US is probably the most beautiful and scenic country in the world in terms of nature, it has mostly all of the world climates. But look where you people got. So why does it matter so much that you don't have such a rich history as us? Make it, it's never too late. You should also stop being the protective "big bro" and verbally attack big countries and invade others to take their resources (yes, I'm mostly looking at the Middle Eastern countries - that got invaded mostly for oil and for influence in the region, but usually all over the world) when you're the actual bully. I mean mind your own business and let the others defend themselves. Defend your own country, defend the neighbors if you have to but only if you have to and when they give you permission to do so. Build your country, make people eat more healthy, start cooking, remove Big Pharmas and other big corporations bad influence on peoples pockets. I mean, yes, I watch all kinds of reaction videos and I like that you know how to make fun of yourselves because a bit of fun is a dose of intelligence but I'd also love to see this country be less stressed, drivers calmer and more attentive, less distracted, I'd like to see people care more about the others, have more empathy and lead in almost if not in every aspect of life. If you really want to make your country better, show us how you make things better and others will follow, the competition will be tighter with each country becoming better and better with time.

I have a repply for an old video (a week old because I forgot to post back then) The thing with the service intervals/oil change intervals depends a lot on the homologation that the car has... But cars that require ACEA or specific standards from the manufacturer and are approved for 15k kms must use fully synthetic oils that do not have more than 20% mineral additives -No minerals (5000km or 3000m) -No semi-synthetic, usually 30/70 or 40/60 mix, with the highest percentage being the mineral base, (7000-8000km or 5000m) -No Syntetic Blend, usually 50/50 mix between mineral base and synthetic additives) (8000-10000km or 7000m) -American synthetic oils are normally a similar percentage to semi-synthetic, but the other way around, that is, between 60 and 70% synthetic base (10000km or 8000ml) -A European synthetic oil, in order to achieve approval and can be labeled as synthetic, must be at least 80% synthetic based, with a maximum of 20% mineral additives, most of which are around 85% synthetic base (15000km or 10000m and above) or higher For example, both Mobil and Shell have 2 types of synthetic oils, the normal synthetic that meets the GM Dexross standard (sorry if I misspelled it) and the synthetic "European Formula". Which complies with VW, MB, BMW, PSA, Ford and a very long etc of standards which also includes GM Standard and off course it's more expensive, in Shell its the one with the Ferrari approval logo And those Syntetic oils must last 15k kms, otherwise they would not be approved even for being labeled as Syntetic oils in Europe 👍 What the filter says is something else, and that is why the manufacturer is the one who gives you the maintenance interval, and that's why in European cars if you go for an aftermarket oil filter you should go for at least one than was homologated for your car service interval And the manufacturer its the one who gives you that info Not the corner/community workshop Not the uncle/cousin Not the dealer Not the agency

Don’t assume that a statement like “there is no need for a car” is true in all of Europe or just all of Germany. I am German and I can assure you that I rely on my car very much. I have to. I live in a rather rural area of North-Rhine-Westphalia. So I do not even live in one of the less densely populated states. And for me to get to work and back I do need a car. With a car it is 50 minutes to and from work, one way. If I use public transport it is between just over 100 minutes at best and the need to sleep at the bus station at worst. And that is a real possibility, because my working hours are flexible. And no, I do not drive a tiny car either. It is a Mercedes Benz GLC. Why? I am a big guy and I need headroom. And I have to drive across the hills in winter in snow, so all wheel drive is very useful. It is not like I have some crazy strong engine. Just the basic 197 hp micro hybrid.

Why buy a car for the same price as the truck, especially if going for high end trim /lots of options, cos they are in a truck the taxes are much lower. I think it might have been "not just bikes" that did the video on it but I've seen a few cover why wagons in particular have died as a category over there, even though it has the same space as mid size suv. In Europe for a long time now basically every car is avaliable with a diesel and these are really popular, mostly due to mpg. Generally the only cars that don't have diesel engine as an option are the smallest of the small cars like vw up!, hyundai i10 and obviously sports cars. I prefer petrol engines but even though our diesels can be as small as 1.2l they always have the torque, great mpg and usually cost the same as petrol alternatives so I always find it weird that diesels are unpopular in the US (other than for trucks). Fuel injection repair is expensive nowadays but they aren't as crude and tractor-like as they used to.

I am amazed by the American view that size is everything. When you consider that a Formula 1 engine is just 1600cc (97 cu inches) turbocharged and producing about 800 to 850 hp, why the hell do you need a 7 litre engine in any car. It's so wasteful. I know an ordinary car engine is not a F1 engine, but why on earth any car needs an engine of the size they are in America is just pointless. Surely a BMW with a 3000cc engine that will produce 530 hp do 0-60 in 3.5 secs and have a top speed limited to 155mph why on earth do you need any more engine.

And it can go up to 220kph and beat the 0 to 100kph in under 6 seconds which is pretty nice. It also weight 1.2 metric tons which is pretty light for a "family" car. Technology has advanced, even if you omit the electronics, the types of alloy used is constantly changing for the best. But I get the point that if you are the only one with a small car then you are extra tucked in a accident. Which feels like a weird and vicious spiral, just so you are safer, which in turn makes it less safer for others, who in turn by bigger cars to be safer. Is this actually the case?
