German here. In 1984 I visited a summer camp in California as a 14 year old teen. I was asked by a self-proclaimed car enthusiast if we had cars in Germany. When I told him that Germany (at the time) supplied roughly 25% of the world's cars and that Daimler invented the internal combustion engine car he refused to believe me. He said in full confidence:" Everybody knows that Ford invented the car." I tried to convince him otherwise. He continued to refuse to believe me. Back then there was no Internet to quickly check up on this fact so I decided to back down and ignore him. Sigh.

That's the bit I don't get with the US. When it's pointed out a mistake's been made, so often people there refuse to accept it. If someone told me 'sorry you got that wrong, here's why', I'd at least concede I may have so I'd give them the benefit of the doubt until I discovered otherwise or confirmed they were right. Not be insistent I can't be wrong, when in most of these cases, they're 100% wrong. Exceptionalism and not being taught about the outside world does that to some there.

I've had the ID thing once when I went to Florida in 1999. Every place I went to excepted my passport as a valid ID for getting beer or sitting at the bar but one. I was at a Tom Petty Concert and wanted to get a beer and they refused to serve me because my passport wasn't a valid Florida ID. I said: There is a stamp on it from the US Customs department that they agree this is me, manager even got involved but they refused te serve me. Went on to the Heineken stand 30 feet away and they served me without any problems.

The repeated asking for ID to get alcohol in the USA is funny to me, specially when some people are clearly way above the age. The first time i went to the USA on a vacation with a buddy (at the age of 23) and we went to a bar we obviously got asked for ID, so i showed the bar girl my passport and she was giving a funny look at it, so me and my buddy started smiling a bit because the situation. Than she was like, what is so funny are these fake? So than I just replied to her that the ID situation is a bit funny and weird to us, while back home in Europe we been going out clubbing since the age of 14 and had some beers while going out no problem. The look on her face priceless, but she was cool and we had some more talks about the differences between most European countries and the USA through the night.

The expired ID one reminds me of when I was in a supermarket in the UK and the parma ham I was buying wouldn't scan (the barcode). The cashier said "oh, that's why, it's out of date, I can't sell you this" I said *what do you mean, out of date? It's cured meat! It's dried! It's preserved! Its been hung in a tree in Italy for years!" She looked at me like I was insane! 😂

That story with your ID isn't that stupid. I don't know American law but are they required to ask for an ID or for a valid ID? Because an expired ID is officially not a valid ID here in the Netherlands. And there is a difference between knowing you're an adult and proving it with a valid ID. Someone who works in a bar doesn't want problems with the police so maybe even though he knew you were an adult he didn't want to risk it.
@tkps
@tkps 8 ай бұрын
It's still a common sense thing to have previously accepted that same ID as being an age prover not a drivers licence prover. I could understand if they had procedures like you say you do which they must follow. But it doesn't sound like that was the case rather it was the bar tender's own decision and lack of understanding. He hadn't just swanned in with an expired never seen before ID, he knew him. I don't think the situation's the same. But it's just my opinion.

Ope, I think you might need some more gays in your life. 😅 I’m gay and from Indiana. I’m pretty familiar with how some dudes from Indiana speak and think. I am not personally offended by what you said. Culturally, I think you’re trying to demonstrate a neutral, open minded viewpoint and are likely not exposed very often to gay culture as someone from (I believe more of a rural area but I don’t remember the town) Indiana. I don’t know if I think of it as an accent or an affectation. I don’t recall anyone really saying it’s an accent before. Some people speak that way. Some don’t. Who knows why. People are going to be bristled by the comment because there is a remarkable amount of bullying and abuse (emotional, verbal, often physical) because someone is perceived to be too gay because of how they speak. I don’t think your intention is to belittle him or marginalize him, only point out that perhaps ironically, he may be considered by some to have an “accent.” You might be unaware that saying things like, “nothing wrong with that”, “to each their own”, “it’s not for me” is wording frequently used when also arguing against LGBTQ+ rights and causes or when people say homophobic things. L I don’t think that was your intention, but it is going to be hard for some people to hear your good intentions over other people’s hurtful words and actions. One of the things that I appreciate about your Chanel is that, in my opinion, you are sincere and good natured. I enjoy your videos. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rmHTgYOhoLlqfassi=eyArKRF6-RAz33Wr

Well said! I don’t label myself as gay, queer, if you want to focus on sexuality, but I do claim the transgender title for sure and I just want you to know that his comments caused me to bristle some, but I chalked them up as basically naive or innocent more so than malicious or mean spirited so I was willing to overlook them. As you pointed out though that can be hard for some of us in the lgbtq+ community to do considering all the clearly hostile negative hateful rhetoric that some people do put out against us gladly, so it makes you pause for a moment to reflect, at least it does me. But that kind of hostility is one of the reasons I left the US for safer places and it was one of the best decisions I ever made.

You have a gay accent?? Oh wow ... That's wrong! He was referring to his mom wearing a headscarf and that was the thing. Saying he has a gay accent is stereotyping! LJ
@The_real_Arovor
@The_real_Arovor 6 ай бұрын
Why is that stereotyping, I‘m gay, and I speak normal, but there are people who have that exact speech pattern, and they’re always gay. It‘s that over the top affectionate pronounciation, that some gays like to use. Tyler Oakley is another good example. It’s immediately apparent that they’re gay, just because of their accent. For me that’s an instant turn off, but for everyone their own. In Switzerland there’s some people that use some very distinctive accents that immediately outs them as filthy rich. Some people adopt a speach patttern from people of their subculture and you can immediately thell. That’s not stereotyping, that’s just a fact.

Boycotts work to get countries off their collective arses and join the world. Nth Korea is the single failure. South Africa practised apartheid for many years. White minority with far more rights, especially to vote than the black majority (remember Nelson Mandela). No one would entertain there nor play sport there nor allow anyone from there to do so outside. It contributed to the white minority 'accepting defeat'. The Cold War ended for similar reasons, i.e. economic trade. When war can't or shouldn't work, this takes longer but also works (as it will with Russia) but only when the world participates.

Nah, your bartender was right, you can't use an expired ID to buy alcohol. The point is that the owner of that ID should have gotten a new one and discarded the old one. Suppose that you replaced your licence and a younger relative with a similar appearance finds your old one and tried to buy alcohol. If he succeeds and the bar subsequently gets inspected then the bartender loses his license to serve and thus his livelihood. He was absolutely right to refuse you.
