Border control "officer" doesn't know that Portugal is a country !?? Education in the USA is kind of mind blowing

It gets to the point where I wonder what they do teach them rather than what they don't. Because there's so much about so many thing they don't know the rest of us do because we're taught. Bit sad really. People like Charlie at least want to know and are willing to learn but so many are confidentally ignorant to the point of arguing with you even about your own country (like chinchilla lady). That I don't get.

How can be that person the one managin the USA borders. I would (not) understand if the country is a small one (like Andorra) and the border police has to check a passport guide, but Portugal!! Don't beat yourself up too much. You aren't dumb. You may be not as educated when it comes to stuff in the rest of the world(as some other Americans appear to be - blame it on your educational system). But at least you are interested in those topics and places. You are willing to learn and educate yourself. That's how it's done. So no, you are not dumb. You're an intelligent guy who's held back by a US system that is very self-centered.

I went back to England for a holiday when I was 19 and my young Uncle met me in London. He'd been staying at a backpacker place before I got there so palled up with a Canadian guy. He'd razz him up about being American knowing he wasn't and the bloke rose to the bait each time. As you say, not impressed and that was in the 80's. Even then Canadians didn't want to be seen as Americans abroad. Can't say I blame them.

It goes away back. I am Canadian and my dad was a WWII veteran. When I visited Paris France in 1980, he told me to wear a Canadian flag lapel pin. He said that I would be treated better in Europe if people knew that I am Canadian. It turns out that he was absolutely right. My friends and I stopped in a café and started speaking to each other in English and some French teenagers started staring at us. As we left the café, they followed us out and then started chasing us and throwing stones! They were yelling at us, "Stupid Americans!" We yelled back to them in French, "We're not American! We're Canadian!" They immediately started to apologize and after a bit one of my friends exchanged addresses with one of them and they became "pen pals" (which is what people did before social media). @@margplsr3120

After the American colonies became free from England, the language and pronunciation changed over time in England. Americans spoke more the English of that earlier time than the English did. British English now is thus a version of English.

Ehhh, language evolves overtime all over the place, it's a bit silly. If anything a lot of American English also used the older British words, like Aluminum. I think that most Americans that use this tactic are somewhat more aware of the world than their regular counterparts, as they experience what is called "fremdschämen" in German, or "being ashamed for being associated with someone who unashamedly does incredibly stupid things". I don't think an American who is unaware of how stay-at-home Americans and American tourists are perceived abroad would think of using this tactic. In that regard, I think this has a good chance of succeeding at first glance and blunting the initial, stereotypical expectations of stupidity you would otherwise experience when "outing" yourself as American.

Two things I am reminded of which didn't directly involve me. A French friend told me that he had been sent to Texas for his job. They found a house in a neighborhood not too far from his job. When they moved in, neighbors came by to welcome them. One of the first questions they asked was "What church do you go to?" Needless to say, he had been puzzled. In 1996, a journalist wrote about his call to the US Olympic Committee's sales department to buy tickets to some events. The person on the other end asked him where he lived. He said New Mexico. She responded, oh you will have to get the tickets from your country.

I was thinking about this and I'm not even joking. If I were supposed to made a list of worst to best places to live on this planet it would look like this: (Worst to best with examples) 1. Active war countries (Ukraine, Israel) 2. Regime countries (North Korea) - but this is speculative - Kazahstan regime is nothing compared to North Korea for example. 3. 3rd world countries (Afghanistan) 4. USA (exceptionally) 5. 2nd world countries (Brazil, other South American Countries, some African ones) 6. 1st world countries (Europe, Australia, Canada, some countries in Africa like SA) I'm not 100% sure about correct order between 4 & 5 but at this moment I will leave that list as it is. The reason I will leave it at this order is because even though in 2nd world countries people (so called middle-class) might have less than in USA then in those countries they are not suddenly left with nothing because of life-killing medical debts or sudden job loss. So it's more like having less - but stable. That's also the reason why USA has it's exceptional place on that list - because USA is truly exceptional. Just not in the way Americans tend to belive it is. And yes - we want to see more of them (videos) 🙂

Honestly think the "I thought presidents are just an american thing" is excusable - even if you do watch international news you'll hear a lot about chancellors and prime ministers, maybe news just use the terminology head of state, dictator, and whatnot... Thinking the person running the country is only called president in the US could come about quite easily - of course if the person in question has no concept how other countries are run its another story...

To be able to name four states is amazing. Imagine an American can’t even point out a country on a map, much less name one of its states, or capital, let alone 4 states.That’s some entitled attitude right there.

It's your schoolsysten guys. What did you learn about geography and the history of the world when you receive your high school diploma? All you need to know is American history and the capitols of your 52 states. Even in college you don't need to know more if you don't want to. Our schools here in Germany are not perfect and getting worse each year, but your kids learn nothing.....

Geography lessons at my school in the UK in the 50s, even covered the slave trade. Part of the triangular trading routes due to ocean currents. Also, why Britain imported American and Canadian wheat, it being more suitable for making modern bread.

It's not just that - it's the lack of foreign news reporting, the dearth of foreign TV shows and movies (they all get remade in an American fashion) and a general lack of exposure to other cultures.

For the 'American' guy, no America is not three or four places, it's two continents. Stop claiming them as your nationality. Wonder if he'd be pissed if we asked him if he were Mexican, Peruvian or Canadian.

Even if Canadians sounds different than USlanders (intentional joke) then most of people in Europe won't hear the difference because most of us are not so well familiar with different accents of USA. All we know that people in Texas and Alabama sounds westernish style and whole the rest of US sounds like "typical American accent" to us. And of course there are many accents all over USA but we can't differentiate all of them. We know southern (TX, AL) and non-southern to be honest. It's like asking American... or hell no - even German to differentiate Silesian and Warsaw accent in Poland. I mean... c'mon. Only we know that. So when Canadian says he's an USlander we might think it has to be some state from northern part of USA but we don't know which one.

Assuming that a US american is from Texas, California, New York or Florida is actually not that crazy as it may seem at first glance. These four states combined are home to about 36 % of the total US population which means chances that you're correct in your assumption are not that bad. 5:05 Yes the Philippines are in South East Asia. 8:00 You mean "less shamefull than being from the USA". Canadians are from America. America is not a country, it is a continent (or a twin continent). Even US americans themselves where aware of this once: When President Monroe presented his Monroe doctrine in 1823 (which states "America for Americans") he was specifically referring to the colonial empires and the colonies in South and Central America, and was specifically excluding the USA because they already where independent. This means that he - and probably most other US americans as well - understood during those times that the USA are just a country and that everyone born anywhere in North or South America is in fact an American.

NORTH America is a Continent. SOUTH America is ANOTHER Continent. The COUNTRY of America (USA) is NOT a Continent. People from other Countries within those two Continents would NOT thank you for calling them 'American.' They have their OWN Countries.
@HH-hd7nd
@HH-hd7nd 8 ай бұрын
@@lexiburrows8127 Doesn't change anything - and what you said about the continents depends on the definition of continent which is not universal worldwide. In many countries North and South America count as one continent, same with Europe and Asia - sometimes even Europe, Asia and Africa. That in modern colloquial language the USA and the term America are used interchangeably doesn't changy anything about the fact that it is incorrect. That's the same as using the terms Germany and Europe interchangeably or Saudi Arabia and Asia.
