Apartheid in South Africa was the political system were there was the segregation between the black population and the white population. This was abolished in the early 1990's. Also, don't be embarrased for not knowing something, as least you can admit and you are willing to learn 👍

Charlie, I was with you on the vaccine. I was a healthy, non smoker, active 50 year old who worked out all the time. My 22 year old son got the vaccine and couldn’t talk me into it. Then Covid hit our home. I spent weeks in the hospital and now have lung disease. I lose my breath doing any small task. I am on two puffers. I have gained weight and am in a pretty dark place. My son got Covid and took a week of work and was fine. I regret not getting the vaccine every day of my life.

Arrogant ignorance is cringe worthy. Arrogant confident ignorance is painful. When either of the above is combined with a learning resistance it can result in pretty stupid situations. Ignorance can be combatted by learning. So if you don't know something but you aspire to change that; that's highly commendable. That's what you have demonstrated many times: an open mind, inquisitive, willing to learn, and not above conceding when you don't know something. Very positive characteristics.

Rather, if talking about countries, it would be tantamount to expecting people to know what is capital city of Béarn, Occitania or Brittany, in France. I don't get why americans expect people to know about their states. What matters to us is the country as a whole. Their states are irrelevant to anyone not american. If they want to be relevant, they need to become proper countries, like Monaco or Lesotho are.

With two other male friends we first visited the USA in 1976, spending a total of 4-5 months there. We travelled around by Continental Trailways Buses, visiting or passing through about 80% of the US States. This was before the Internet, before the big impact of CNN. So, while the people we met were generally nice and friendly, we were awestruck by how ignorant they were about the rest of the world! Due to our education system in New Zealand it was mandatory to learn about say, the top 20 Countries in the world. What was worrying was that we seemed to know more about USA history, political structure, including US involvement in wars etc, than most Americans. Plus, this was just general knowledge, same as we learned about our own Country New Zealand, but also Australia, Canada, England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Australia, France, Germany, Portugal, Spain, India, Russia etc. We met so many people, often spending hours talking every day and their lack of knowledge was just crazy. The College/University students we met... wow, talk about delusional. What the hell were they being taught in their Colleges? Oh, the STEM field students were fine but the rest... wow. All the topics/subjects mentioned in these videos were raised but at least back then they had an excuse for their ignorance: seldom was anything reported on in their media, TV/Newspapers and magazines, that was about anything outside the USA. At least these days with media/internet etc, if they wish to, they can find out things about the world. Cheers.

I am Dutch and in the eighties and nineties, I used to go to England on holidays, at least once a year. I had a small tent that I put up at a camping site and stayed there for a few days, or better nights. During the day, I would take long walks in the countryside or visit museums. Then I moved on and stayed at another camping site. If the weather was poor, I would find a B&B because sleeping in a wet tent with wet clothes is not very nice. On a very nice September day, I visited the Shuttleworth collection in Old Warden. That is really a place to go if you can. My main interests go towards the airplane collection. There are many really old airplanes there, including the oldest still-flying airplane in the world. There is a very well-restored Desoutter MK.II. aircraft over there, and I was looking it over when a man came towards me. With a heavy "American accent" he asked me if I could tell him more about that airplane because there was no explanation board next to it. I do know some about these planes, so I explained as much as I could. After a while, he asked me who the manufacturer of that plane was. He did not believe me when I told him that it was made by the Desoutter company based in Croyden, England. It was a licensed build from the Dutch Koolhoven factory and designed by Frits Koolhoven. He absolutely refused to believe that it was not an American aircraft. According to him, the aero industry in Europe was so far behind the Americans that they could never have designed such a "modern" aircraft. I assured him that this aircraft was designed by a Dutch aircraft designer and built by an English manufacturer. The MK.I. version had an ABC Cirrus Hermes engine on it that was designed and built in England. The MK.II version here in the museum has a de Havilland Gypsy III engine on it that was designed and built by the de Havilland Company in England. The man did not believe me at all and said that he would find his own way around because "you don't know s**t about aircraft" (his words). "And de Havilland is an American company, not English." Sorry, man, but especially in those days, the aero industry in Europe was at a much higher level than in the US. And de Havilland is an English company with a subsidiary in Canada that is now part of the Bombadier Group. There is also a subsisiary in Australa. He shrugged his shoulders and walked away. Americans....!?!?!? Note: The Australian subsidiary of de Havilland was purchased by Boeing in 2009 and changed its name to Boeing Aerostructures Australia.

I think the dumbest conversation I had with an American was a lady standing at the bottom of an escalator. I asked her to pardon me. And she turned around and said she was stuck; I had to explain to her if the powers not driving the belt on the escalator it's just a flight of stairs. She paused, looks at me for a moment and then walked up to the top. I think she was embarrassed. Pretty dumb but kind of sweet in a way.

I promise you this, I was in the one the worst states for education and we still learned the 7 continents in kindergarten. We learned all states in 1st and 2nd grade. Even recently in my senior year we had all kinds of geography test and quizzes and we did geoguessr. @@jtmassecure4488 I am french. I never cared about school and graduated high school while hardly doing any homework. If i have one redeeming feature, it is that i am not stupid. I had other stuff to handle at the time. The point is: one can't put everything on the education system. One of the things i cared the least about when i was a student was the English language. Which i put in the same category as the Latin language. I sucked at both almost equally hard and didn't give a damn. Yet, how come i can watch videos in english, or write to you in english right now? Not because of school, obviously. I decided to learn by myself later on. Other languages, too. I never cared about school but i was always curious. Curiosity and having a critical mindset are enouraged here. And so, the problem lies with mindsets in the USA, more than with school. Most of what we learn during our life, we learn outside of school. School is only meant to teach people how to learn. A country where stupidity is praised, where idiots come together to tell those who know better than them that they have a superiority complex, and where obesity is touted as a pride, is a country where people will get more stupid and fatter as time goes. Hence, ridiculing stupidity and obesity for what they are should be necessary in order to get a better society. Not praising and encouraging those. But as long as corporations will have money to gain by praising obesity and stupidity, things will get worse. Indeed, if the food industries produce toxic food that makes people obese, the most cost efficient way to handle it for them is not to produce healthier food for people. It is to make americans themselves think that everything is the best as they are, and so, create a laughable "fat pride" movement. Just so that corporations can continue the same and cut costs ever more. In conclusion, this "don't say anything if you don't have anything nice to say" they often sell in the USA is the very best way to ensure people will never come together, never look objectively at their country, criticize it, look for solutions, revolt, and adress the oligarchy disaster. It is insane how the oligarchy there can manage to make their cattle eat anything. Literally AND figuratively. Any time things look dire or they want to get rid of something moderately annoying to them, they transform the thing into a "symbol of freedom". Like when they made corruption legal by presenting it as a "fantastic american freedom" called lobbying. And this continues on. I am only halfway the logic at works. The second half is about how all this came to be a problem for other countries, too. And how this made the image of the USA in the world worse and worse and worse over the past 50 years. Unfortunately, these videos only brush the surface of everything. I want to advocate for more curiosity.

This reminds me of what an English lady who worked for the Enigma decoders during WWII where an engineer invented the first computer to speed up the decoding and translations of the German military messages, which shortened the war for at least two years or so. It must have been in sixties, or earlier of last century when an American friend told her that she just read in the newspaper that in America they invented a device (computer) that could do the entire book keeping of a multinational on its own in three days and added, that the British could never invent something that advanced coz the UK were so backwards. The English lady could'nt say anything in her defence coz at the time that WWII project was still highly classified, so she had to unwillingly nod in agreement.

Hey Charlie. Never be embarrassed for not knowing stuff, as long as you're willing to learn. I was alive during the tail end of apartheid and it was a topic widely discussed back then, but when it ended, the need wasn't there, especially as other more pertinent issues became the topic on everyone's mind. After becoming an adult, I have learned so much more about topics from the past, that impacts the world we live in today. Even a great education system can't teach you everything, so it very much depends on your particular area of interest as you grow older. Things also change - a lot - I was born in a Europe divided by the Iron curtain, but grew up in a changing world, with the fall of the Berlin wall, the disintegration of the Soviet bloc and war and formation of so many new countries, but things registering in Europe as important, as was the death of Princess Diana, were barely noticed in Africa or Asia. I was traveling in West Africa at the time and I only heard it by chance, because the radio in the cafe I was in, was tuned to a British channel, I think, because it just wasn't important. To be fair, royalty isn't important to me either, even though I live in a monarchy.

You know what I just realized? I don't think it's actually stupidity, people react to.. Because as a Dane, I would never expect a tourist to know everything about my country! In Copenhagen we have many Chinese tourists. If they asked something completely "stupid", I would expect that! Cause of course they don't know everything about Denmark! Even when visiting here! But they have a lot of respect. They are humble.. I honestly think, that what we react to, is American entitlement! Like even when Americans say something completely stupid, they seem to think they are right. They assume they are right. I don't know.. I don't think it's necessarily stupidity, but more the feeling of American entitlement that Europeans (etc) feel and react to. Like even when we know WE are right, and have the facts, Americans can make us feel like we are the stupid ones in the conversation.. Does that make sense? 😄😊 I grew up watching American TV shows, and you do get pretty tired of a Swedish/Scandinavian girl, always, called Inga (not that common a name, at least in Denmark and I think Sweden, too?), in German lederhosen! It HAS gotten better, since the 90s! 😄 But the European stereotypes are just so.. thick? (What are stereotypes? Black and white? ) And when Americans, then, want to teach us about us, through the stereotypes they know.. It probably seems more offensive then any other nationality, honestly not knowing, and asking "stupid" questions.. I also think we do get a bit annoyed about the steroetypical views on Europeans, even before you meet an American! 😁 Or is that just me?? 😂😂 This is just a thought, that came to me. I think there's something to this 🤔 Because there are stupid people everywhere! I have a high IQ, and I am stupid all the time! Seriously! We can't know everything about everything! I recently began teaching myself the countries of Africa, because I thought it was kind of American of me (sorry, I had to.. 😂😜😜), not knowing where the African countries were located. I really only knew where Egypt, Ghana, the ivory coast and south Africa was! I am the same with Asian countries! I do know where some are, but others I have NO idea! American states the same! Even intelligent people don't know what they don't know! It's how you ask Vs assume things about others.. I think 😊 "It's not what you're saying It's the way you say goodbye" (Danish song from the 80's, but it says this.. it's not the words, it's the way it's said) That's what I think!

I think a lot of Africans if they watched this would take exception to your comment about Africa at around the 11:28 mark, because while there are some Africans who still live in villages with huts there are many large cities with modern infrastructure across the continent. I am not speaking from personal experience, but I watch a lot of videos on KZbin as well as news channels outside the US, like DW News from Germany and occasionally the BBC, so as a U.S. American who is an emigrant in Mexico I have probably considerable more exposure to what’s going on in the rest of the world than the average American and I definitely don’t have an America centric view of the world. Btw you might want to follow those news channels they’re both available on KZbin. From beautiful Oaxaca enjoy your evening!

I visited Hawaii' a pair of years ago and my friends and I decided to visit their astronomical center because seeing stars on a telescope is pretty and educational and they have one of the clearest skies to do astronomical activities. I was shocked by the level of the rest of the participants of the activity. Of the 15 that were there only the 3 of us (Spaniards) and the old couple from Belgium knew the answers of the very basic explanation. I didn't learn anything and it nearly blew my head. A nurse (with an university degree!) a little younger than me didn't knew the Moon is a satelite, the solar system is attached via gravitational fields and that other planets have moons. 😮 The five of us were apalled. It was a 10 years old science class. And the rest of the group (all from USA) were awed and the person doing the explanation was painting patiently the path to the answer like you do with a small child. 😮 When I came to Spain I asked my 70 years old mother (with basic school education) the same questions and she answered correctly.

There are currently over 90 counties in the UK which change with changes in administrative law changes and are completely different from when I was at school. I grew up in a village in the West Riding of Yorkshire, but these days the West Riding has been supplanted and even Yorkshire as a county no longer exists in law. These days it's part of Bradford. So there's no point in learning county names as they change all the time. At least it makes things easier.

And frankly Princeton for a young person from my modest background it was very impressive. We arrive at Princeton and there students take us to see our rooms, "my student" shows me the bedroom and the bathroom, and I mechanically look at the sink, and he... Looks at me very proudly and says to me Look there if you turn left you have cold water, and if you turn right you have hot water And I answered him, Dude, the Romans in Europe invented viaducts, aqueducts and water canalizations more than 2000 years ago... I vaguely know what a faucet is

Yeah, South African here. Apartheid is essentially pretty much as already mentioned in the comments. 1994 was the official demarcation. I was 12 so much of this horror I learned in school. Glad it is over, appalled that it was a thing. I will add this, translated it means 'segregation', yet a single word will never describe how messed up it truly was. Today we see the converse of the same but to a FAR lesser degree. A somber era which I still find hard was actually a reality. I say this respectfully even though words will never suffice.
