Oh man I remember talking to this girl who was studying abroad in the Netherlands (my country). She was a nice girl but she was a textbook example of how the American education system failed her in multiple ways. A prime example was history and how 'old' things are. She was oh so proud of her old town, and how it was founded somewhere in the 1700's and had a lot of old architecture yadda yadda. I'm sure it's great, I love old architecture and culture. But I asked her if she visited some of ours in the city she's studying at, we've got a lot of history too. Her response was "it can't be that old." It was a big discussion because she refused to believe there was a world before the USA and she couldn't wrap her head around the fact that my town was founded in 792. Not 1792, but 792. I had to show her the wiki lmao.

I’m Irish and have visited the US a few times. One time me and a couple of friends were in a store in NYC and were chatting. This older woman (I’m only taking like 50’s) came up to us and asked where we’re from so I said Galway, Ireland. I’ll never forget the next thing she said to me. “Wow, your English is really good.” To which I replied: “thanks, yours too” and smiled. She looked so confused for a solid 5 or 6 seconds before informing me that: “of course it is because she’s from America”, so I said something like “aye, and I’m from Ireland where we’ve spoken English for longer than your country’s existed” and carried on shopping 😂

Many times I've had arguements with Americans telling me that I need to learn English and to speak proper English because they read that I Spelled Colour, Honour, Neighbour, and humour the proper way. One of them insisted that she were in the right all the time and I was wrong. It dragged on for a bit just to lure Her into a direction I wanted Her to go until She said "Where did you learn English because it's terrible". I said "In England. I'm from Britain!" to which She replied "You can't be. I know English because I'm speaking it and you're not. You are a liar!". This get's more entertaining; so I say "OK then, what language do you think we speak in Britain?" She replied "Err, British Duh!". I know where this is going so I go along with it. "And what Countries are in Britain?" to which She replied "One, Britain is a country. Shows how smart you are!". Here I'm going to try to educate Her. "Is that so? Google: United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and tell me what Google says". So She does and comes back "OK. I saw Britain but I didn't see England. You're stupid!". So then I ask "Where's London?" Me giving my screen a stupid face look at this point. She replied "In England stupid!". I'm getting frustrated by her stupidity at this point then said "Right, England is a Country in Britain". "No stupid. England is in the UK. I knew you were lying" was her response. Cutting it short. The arguement went on and on. She claimed that Her English was correct and My English was wrong because She was speaking English and even though This country spawned the language and My family have been here for over a thousand years She was in the right. I just left her to it and let her idiocy speak for itself for all to see. This is not an isolated case. I've had variations of this arguement so many times I've lost count. This is how f-ing stupid a lot of Americans can be. This is why they can only drive Automatics. (Europeans will get the message of what I mean here!)

Sorry, but you Brits are idiots too and that autmatic thing is one of the past, since intelligent people would ALWAYS chose that kind of transmission, since it is way more oeconomic. On the other side, your "English" is primitive still, since it is based on an OLD lower german accent and the point is on LOWER. Ever read shakepeare? Even there you'll find that proof, that you don't have an language of your own, since it is still missing important things, not just one (grammatical) tense. I had an altercation with my old "english" teacher, who actually was from the US, to make it even more ridiculous, trying to sell it to us, that English is older then the german language. I dared to disagree, at the age ot 15 !!! and told him to his face, that this is a lie, BECAUSE english is bases on said LOWER german accent. He still insisted and gave me a warning, which my other teacher had removed, after I got to tell him the whole story, and he even gave his colleague, who was also his friend, a talk-to about that topic, since it was a bloody lie.

I was a Taxi Driver. I picked up a passenger from the Airport who had just flown in from California. As we were driving to the hotel, he was looking out the window and turned to me to say, "Gee, you guys sure have imported a lot of Eucalypts." Caught by surprise, I replied, "What do you mean?" He gestured expansively out the window at the bushland we were driving through, and explained to me as if I were a little slow, "All these trees are Eucalypts. They are from California, where I am from. You guys sure must have imported a lot to have so many!" I just about had a brain aneurysm trying to process this thought, and all I managed was "Um, they are native to Australia..." He just gave me a pitying look, shook his head sadly at my ignorance, and stated, quite authoritatively, "No, I think you will find they are from California!" I let the confusion clear from my face, smiled and said simply, "Oh, I guess we must have imported all the Koalas also." Again he shook his head pityingly and said, slowly, talking to the obvious simpleton I am, "No, those are native to Australia." "Oh," I said, confused again, "Given they eat only Eucalypt leaves, they must have been very relieved when we imported so many to save them from starvation..." He looked a little confused, and said "No, they eat Gum leaves." "Mate," II replied, "Gums *ARE* Eucalypts. They and Koalas are native, the seeds were taken from Ballarat and Bendigo to California during the '49 Gold Rush, and that is how you ended up with Eucalypts in the USA!" He absorbed this for a while, all sorts of emotions playing over his face as he reassessed his entire existence, then he turned to me and said "Was Australia already settled in 1849?" I gave up... 🤦‍♂️

The world history we get taught in Australian schools is pretty much limited to the world wars. The better schools teach about the wars, the not so good ones just teach what Australians did in them. @@paquitagillis901 But England hasn't been a country since the Acts of Union 1707 (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acts_of_Union_1707). If Texans should say they're from the US then shouldn't people from England say they're from the UK/Britain/Great Britain? EDIT: I should've written 'sovereign nation' instead of 'country'. Both Texas and England are non-sovereign entities/regions within sovereign nations with England being a non-sovereign country and Texas being a non-sovereign state. If one thinks one should say either what sovereign nation one is from or what country one is from, but not what state one is from, then obviously Texas is not an option, but England is. I think this is a pretty strange rule though and IMO, if it's OK to say England, then it should also be OK to say Texas (which I think it is, even if not preferable). A final issue is pragmatics. One should not say they're from somewhere no one has heard of. Most people have heard of England and Texas, very few have heard of Victoria outside of Australia and New Zealand.

@@chaoticsequencer it's not semantics, ffs. Nation and Country are two different definitions in dictionary. Nation CAN eventually be used as a synonymous of country only if the cultural heritage and the country territory coincide, but it's a very broad definition and doesn't always identify as a country. Ex. The First Nation in the US refers to the Native Nord American People, but not to the US or Canada, which are the countries those people currently live in. So. Not semantics. Everyone says their country when asked where they are from, never heard anyone refer to their nation as their country (also because they don't necessarily coincide).

As a Canadian who has travelled around much of the eastern side of the U.S. I could write a book about things like this. What irritates me the most is that Americans assume they invented everything. People wonder why Americans are so self-centred as a nation. Here's one of the reasons why. Much of this comes from a deliberate effort by the U.S. media to obscure the origins of new developments and make them sound as if they were all from the U.S. Here's how this is done. Let's say Reuters puts a story on the wire about French scientists making an important discovery in the fight against a nasty disease. This story leads, "French scientists in Lyon have announced today that . . . " and a Canadian newspaper would run the story as is. A U.S. paper will delete the the French references and run the story as, "Scientists have announced today . . . " knowing full well that U.S. readers will automatically assume that the scientists were American. One of the worst examples happened a number of years ago. We were watching the Canadian news on TV then we switched over to NBC news (a U.S. TV network that we can get in Canada). Three stories ran on the Canadian news channel: Canadian researchers had made an important discovery in the fight against HIV/AIDS, a Canadian aircraft (DHC Twin Otter) with a Canadian crew flew to Antarctica to rescue an American scientist who had suffered a heart attack, and the Canadian made robotic arm was being installed on the International Space Station. NBC ran the three same stories and never once used the word 'Canada'. In fact they went out of their way to ensure that no one watching the broadcast would associate these stories with Canada. Only pictures of the robotic arm and the Twin Otter plane that lacked Canadian flags or registration were shown. The significance of the HIV/AIDS development was explained by an American researcher, leaving everyone with the impression that his team was responsible for the development. These aren't isolated examples. They happen every day in every news media in the U.S. And we wonder why Americans sound so smug.

A Canadian born football player was recently signed by an American NFL team and it was noteworthy enough for the story to be picked up by a number of U.S. sports news outlets. Some outlets repeated the original story which contained references to the fact that he was Canadian. Others however, deliberately removed all of those references, leaving the impression that he was an American. Since he had attended a U.S. university, it was an easy con to pull off. Don't get me started on Hollywood propaganda . . .

I saw one of these compilations recently where an Aussie exchange student in the US had a girl ask her where she was from. She pointed on an imaginary globe at the top for the US & at the bottom for Australia. The girl asked but what State is it in. She was told Australia is a different country twice. The girl went onto say but the US IS THE GLOBE. So maybe some think everyone celebrates Thanksgiving because the US runs the world, even knowing other countries exist.

This is a hot one in Canada. The Americans are in disbelief that we celebrate Thanksgiving in a different month (October) which is totally unrelated to the settlers and Indigenous Peoples myth down there. Our Thanksgiving continues the centuries-long European custom of a harvest feast - nothing to do with the Plymouth fantasy. It's in October because up here the cold is coming and the grain is in the barn. Plus, we don't have Black Friday, thank heavens.

I did an online course from a USA university but with people talking part across the world. We had exams and these ran in a 24 hour time slot, the exam itself only talking a couple of hours but once you started you had to finish within six hours. So you needed to decide when you wanted to start to fit in with your day. The dates were posted at the start of the course so everyone could plan, with the start times reference to UTC+0. First exam - carnage. Everyone in non USA countries seemed to be fine figuring out the time difference but not so Americans. Not all Americans of course, but a surprising number just assumed that the window start times posted were referenced to their time zone (which is extra weird as the USA has a number of time zones just across that country) but this was just the start of it. Over the next few days in the forum there was a discussion about what UTC+0 means and why a course aimed at an international audience might decide that is a good way of describing time - us all just having to add to or subtract from 0. Most, while still being a bit grumpy that their specific time zone was not the base, came round but there was a group in one USA area who would not have it, saying it made the most sense to use their time zone as the base. Their argument? Everyone watches America TV and there was a particular show (cannot remember what it was now) that was popular so everyone across the world would just know what the time zone is in that part of the USA, their part, where the show was set. We would all just know, as a matter of course, what the time difference was between our place in the world and theirs. Still can't get my head round even starting to unpick the logic but it sort of went that because we watched say... Friends... everyone across the world knew, in their heart and soul, the time difference between their country and New York so it made the best sense to have that as a base. The people who ran the course kept it at UTC+0 and added a link to a website to help with the conversion.

So in comes a Karen (she wasnt bad, just had the full style) and i take her order. She pays and we are talking a bit and she asks where i am from and i respond Greece, as usual She comes back to me with "Oh nice, the capital of Europe"!!!! I had two colleagues, both from Romania behind me working the bars. The guy litterally dropped below the bar to laugh and stay hidden and the girl hid behind me and in her attempt to stay quiet she was gripping my shoulder. even with her not having long nails, i had her nail pattern in my shoulder for a couple of days. And i had to stay respectful and burst into laughing with my friends loosing it behind me... I never did manage to gather my composure to let the Karen know the greece was not the capital of Europe... But in the end i did had to make her drink, because the other two were useless while she was close...

@@TheIceman567 no, the US needed brits and canadians in the west front too, and the west front needed east front, without the east front the US would have been butchered and would speak german now.

I’m English. I met an elderly American couple in the middle of Trafalgar Square in Central London a few years ago. After explaining to them for a few minutes what was being celebrated that day in Trafalgar Square, they complimented me on my English. Out of politeness, I just took the compliment and said, “thank you”. 😂

I am an Indian guy studying in England for that past 2 years and there was this one old American lady, I think she was from Texas because of her accent. I used to work part-time as a waiter in a small cafe and I heard her talking to some English guy who was 20-21 years old about how good his english was. My jaw literally hit the floor when I saw that guy's reaction as he was absolutely perplexed by such level of stupidity. I couldn't hear much after that because I had to go back to pick up and order but like damm........An American lady, in the very heart of England aka London....... telling an english guy how good his english is for someone who's not from America. Sheesh
