@@michaelkennedy8270 JJ's style doesn't lend itself as easily compared to some lazy reactors. I'd bet a recent chunk of most reactor's audience is only watching for positive reinforcement and they'll barely care about the reactor themself. Whereas JJ going on little research tangents to investigate the topics or rewinding to catch all the jokes like Jay said isn't hitting that positive reinforcement as frequently.

The Michael Palin reference is because he did a series in the early 1990's Pole to Pole. There is one border dispute that was even more amicable than the Antarctic one. Hans Island was claimed by both Denmark and Canada. In 1984, Canadian soldiers visited the island and planted a Canadian flag, also leaving a bottle of Canadian whisky. The Danish Minister of Greenland Affairs came to the island himself later the same year with the Danish flag, a bottle of Schnapps, and a letter stating "Welcome to the Danish Island" (Velkommen til den danske ø). The two countries proceeded to take turns planting their flags on the island and exchanging alcoholic beverages. The dispute was settled in 2022 and now Canada has a land border with Denmark. The penguin would have graduated from university. We don't graduate high school in the UK. The Penguin got a M.A (hons) English Lit and went on to form his own publishing house, a feat later reproduced by a puffin and a ladybird.

Amundsen was smart, Scott was stupid. Manhauling was considered "honorable" but it left Scott's men exhausted, requiring a lot more calories than they had access to. Amundsen, being Norwegian, had experience with traversing snow and ice on skis and dog sleds which spared the men from exhaustion and sped up travel significantly. Amundsen had inuit clothing while Scott had modern wool clothing. Amundsen was warm, Scott was cold. Scott used slow-moving ponies and unproven, slow and unreliable machinery. The machinery broke down and got stuck while the ponies, contrary to dogs, actually sweat, meaning the ponies froze to death while Amundsen's dogs didn't. Amundsen used everything that was perfectly adapted to the conditions while Scott had no clue what he was doing. Amundsen had made it all the way back to Tasmania before Scott was even off the ice shelf.
@SaturnPandaCat3 ай бұрын
I think the article in the beginning about Robert Scott is an example of our humour and sarcasm. It’s based on the propaganda produced by some countries. The ones that either downplay or refuse to acknowledge the contribution of other countries. My favourite was the claim that Amundsen planted flags to piss off the British. Not that they genuinely got there first lmao.

On the topic of penguins, you really need to look into Major General Sir Nils Olav III. Mascot of the Norwegian Kings Guard and resident of Edinburgh Zoo, he occasionally inspects the troops and it is excellent. To quote wikipedia: The next honour was a knighthood, awarded during a visit by soldiers from the Norwegian King's Guard on 15 August 2008. The knighthood was approved by King Harald V and Nils was the first penguin to receive such an honour in the Norwegian Army. During the ceremony a crowd of several hundred people watched the 130 guardsmen on parade at the zoo, and a citation from the King was read out, which described Nils as a penguin "in every way qualified to receive the honour and dignity of knighthood".

In the list of least important events in WW2, the one stating "Eva Braun purchases a purple hat" is a joke relating to the Poem "Warning" by Jenny Joseph which starts with the line "When I grow old I will wear purple" - because Eva DIDN'T grow old and died, alongside Hitler, when she was 33 😂. The 'Jerusalem song' mentioned is the one that started as a William Blake poem and then became a hymn with music by C Hubert H Parry almost a century later. It's called "Jerusalem" and begins with the words "And did those feet in ancient time walk upon England's mountains green, and was The Holy Lamb of God in England's pleasant pastures seen", is sung every year during the Last Night of The Proms, and is practically our chosen National Anthem - closely contested by Land of Hope and Glory! .

The name "Bernard" in Britain, Australia, New Zealand and almost everywhere in the English speaking world is pronounced with the stress on the first syllable and the unstressed vowel, schwa, on the second. People in the USA put the stress on the second syllable as the French do. Even the Saint Bernard dog is the saint ber-nəd, not the saint bə-nard as it is in the USA.
