The problem with WM is that there's too much narration & not enough clips. Dead Parrot & PS' own account have many clips on them that aren't interrupted by narration.

Oh my god! I've said it before and I'll say it again. You are so, so very much like my son. He too suffers with anxiety and hates going out especially during the day when lots of people are about. So we turn into vampires and go out only at night!! I do agree with your thoughts on British comedy because my son completely agreed with what Stephen Fry says. Watch Mojo really doesn't do this show justice with the ultra-short clips. You need to watch from the beginning to get truly absorbed in to their life and fully appreciate the predicaments they create for themselves. Hilarious show!

Hearing you mention the way some comedies end up being sanitised with a marriage or similar, reminded me of what happened to 'Not Going Out' (a superb Lee Mack/Tim Vine sitcom you should check out); - a brilliantly written, one-liner-based comedy around Mack as a lodger, Lucy his landlady and Tim (Lucy's brother) - the last episode of the show had Lee and Lucy suddenly getting married, to give resolution to the ''will they/won't they' premise. - Then, a reboot of the show, sees the two now living in suburbia with two kids. .........

You really must watch Peep show, the dead dog (mummy) episode. It's the very pinnacle of madness. Jez's face while he is eating the dogs leg is priceless, and even more funnier is the way he asks Mark to try some too.

You are right on the money with your analysis; the Stephen Fry metaphor, and your comparisons regarding The Office. UK TV comedy is indeed predicated in normal, or everyday situations - when, all of a sudden, some plot twist serves to offset everything in an absurd or embarrassing way!

You hit on a good point Connor. American comedy celebrates the top dog wisecracker whereas British comedy focuses on the underdog. Also British comedy tends to be a bit darker

Interesting what you say about British comedy often being about social anxiety, social staus or social mistakes (faux pas). Most of the classic comedy I can think of does indeed fall into this category. Peep Show's premise is that every scene is seen through a characters eyes and viewpoint. Well worth watching from the start, though there are 9 series!

You really need to watch full episodes. Patreon it! If you have social anxiety i disagree with this bloke. They make you feel better knowing they're inner thoughts along the show. Especially Mark (David Mitchell) he's so awkward, make me feel almost normal! :) There's so many good history referances and jokes. you'll love it! First series gets a little getting used to then you're fine. It is the funniest show ever... and really can't be done in clips.

You're right about American and British comedy. I always think of it like American comedy being optimistic and off the wall and British comedy is pessimistic and realistic.

I agree with Stephen Fry's comparison of British vs American comedy too. But if this helps, the way I explain his summary to others is that American comedy comes at the expense of others, with the lead shown to be the brave, charismatic, hero. Whilst British comedy comes at the expense of ones self, with the lead shown to be stupid, clumsy or nasty and therefore deserving of failure.

British comedy is more subtle whereas American comedy is very literal and in your face Have you seen The Royle Family? (this is the correct spelling) It's very subtle comedy about a family having conversations which we'd all have almost like they're not even acting but hilarious, sad and a lot of pathos

...and when he is getting off drugs. He is off everything from crack to lattes. And any mention of "crack" (even in a non-drug context) makes him relapse. Culminating with him trying to roll a spliff with his toes after they tie him down to the bed. (if I remember all that correctly). Very funny!

Yes, Stephen Fry is very intelligent. But "Seinfeld" is brilliant as well. That and "Frasier" really differs from "normal" US Sit-Coms.

This is so stupid, watching this without any context surrounding the characters, the way the show is filmed, the show is so unique you'll have no idea what it's going on - you have to watch series 1 episode 1 (which is slow) just to understand the backstories and personalities of the characters, and what they're attempting to achieve in life in general, before you can even start to enjoy the show
