The difference with Fazer milk chocolate might be that Fazer is one of the few companies that makes their chocolate with fresh milk instead of milk powder.

Happy that you liked everything and the package and everything in it came in one piece (was worried about those jams and their glass jars). Your face with the Sisu horna made my day. Edited to add, you should try the turkish pepper with vanilla ice cream. Just crush them and sprinkle on top. I usually mix the ice cream so that it looks like soft ice and then add the candy. And try those rye chips with your favorite cream cheese, better that way.

Hi from Finland! Cloudberry jam is super awesome with vanilla icecream. My favorite ice cream dessert hands down. You'll have to try. P. S. Cloudberries and the jam are real expensive... A rare treat here In Finland too. Maybe $10 that jar.
@ellalella1
@ellalella1 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, and put some of the jam into the microwave and heat it up. Pour the hot jam onto vanilla ice cream, it is so good. It gets this hint of caramel with the berry flavor that is not as clear when the jam is cold as it is when hot.

Cloudberries are very rare for sure. I have heard of no cultivation succeeding. You have to pick them in very dangerous places, swamps, and among wild bears; and in some places you are not allowed to pick them at all, as they might be endangered. If somebody in the southern half of Sweden knows where they grow, he will not tell you! He'll pretend he got them from Lapland. There is a good wiki article: "Rubus chamaemorus". They taste like no other berry, so almost an aquired taste among berries, too. Only the very mature berries, that have gotten a little frost-bite are the most delicious, I think. The more sun they have gotten, the better, too - preferably midnight sun. :-D
@DNA350ppm

This berry is very rare in Sweden, too. It is impossible to cultivate, you have to go out on a swamp and gather them the right season, and not step wrong. If somebody in the southern half of Sweden knows a place where they grow, he surely will not tell anybody. He just pretends he got them from Lapland, where they are a little more plentiful, but still rare. They taste like no other berry to my knowledge.

@@DNA350ppm It is not generally dangerous to pick cloudberries but it is a hassle. You have to wade in wet swamp-ish land and there is often tons and tons of mosquitos in these areas. You will cover yourself in mosquito repellant and they will still eat you alive. We don't have the type you get diseases from though but it is not nice to have hundreds of bites. You may consider wearing a mosquito hat to avoid too many bites to your eyes. Bears do exist in these areas but they are usually not aggressive unless you get between a mom and a cub and you can avoid them by being a bit noisy because bears are smart and don't usually go close to humans if they know you are there. Some people bring a battery powered radio to play while they pick (any) berries so the bear will hear you and not accidentally walk up on you. I have been in bear rich lands in Sweden many times and I have never been afraid of them but I tend to sing a bit to make it easier for them to know I am there. Nothing is 100% but bear attacks are relatively rare especially if you take away the bears that were first shot and then attacked. But picking cloudberries is hard work, it is wet and they can be pretty sparse so every berry might mean 5-10 steps in wet swampy ground so a whole bucket might be many kilometers of walking in wet, slippery land which ground that sinks suddenly (but there is no big risk of getting stuck permently, it doesn't sink that much generally). Some of the best cloudberry lands may also be 10 kilometers from a car road and you need to walk that bit before you even start walking around in the wet marsh. I hate cloudberry picking, I tend to buy them from people who enjoy it. It is expensive but compared to the experience of picking them yourself it is worth every penny. Store bought jam on the other hand is a bit too expensive in my view.

Hi Bryson! from a Swedish-speaking Finlander! You're an amazing Kentucky Scorpio and a very rare guy! I especially like your honesty and your inquiring mind. There is a world of wonders outside the U.S. borders, too, that's for sure. You will be very welcome in Finland, whenever you'll be coming here. I hope that you will arrive here in spring, summer or fall, because we're like a totally different people in the summer as compared to in winter time. One thing you may like is that we don't really like small talk. I take this opportunity to wish you a Happy Birthday in advance! P.S. In the late sixties, I lived and worked in Fort Wayne, Ind., and in Chicago for three years, and visited Milwaukee and San Francisco, so I know a little bit about life in the U.S. One piece of advice for when you come to Finland: Don't believe everything you hear. Somebody may be trying to pull your leg. 😉 But other than that, Finlanders are 100% honest and trustworthy. Welcome to Finland! Välkommen till Finland! (Swe) Tervetuloa Suomeen! (Fin)

Sisu horna is one of my favourite candies. It's more salmiakki flavour than liquorice which I like. Salmiakki is often called salty liquorice but it is actually ammonium chloride which is a salt. In candies it's usually mixed liquorice. It's definitely an aquired taste. Finnish chocolate I find is not nearly as sugary sweet to those that I have eaten from abroad.

Try the cloudberry jam with hard fermented cheese like cheddar, manchego, Gouda, and Serrano/Parma ham on a cheese platter. President Brie goes well to. Cucumber, cornichons, nuts and almonds add crunch but optional. All cheese and ham need to be out in room temperature at least 30 minutes for the flavours. On waffles with whipped heavy cream.

Geisha from Finland? Yes, sir. In Europe we have had a long time admiration for the most elevated Asian culture - not just tea, porcellan, and ink-drawings, but also poetry, yoga, cherry-blossoms, and samurai-sports with fancy names. Finnish poets of high standard have written and translated Japanese style poems and this chocolate is sublime, and so also a huge favourite.
@DNA350ppm

I see that you have a pair of scissors Finnish style - copied all over the world, but the original is from Fiskars, an iron-workshop in the South of Finland, grown huge. And I hope that the Jenkki (which means Yankee) chewing gum came with Xylitol, which is originally a sugar from the sap of the birch tree. It was proven in the late 1970's by the odontological faculty of the University of Turku (south western Finland), that xylitol can heal small cavities and prevent damage to healthy teeth. Look for Xylitol in tooth-pastes and chewing gum, and make sure your children have them regularly - it has helped tooth-health in Finland a lot, as the soils and waters are naturally not rich in fluor which protects teeth in many southern countries. So if tooth-decay is a problem in Kentucky, do help to make a little noise for the sweetener Xylitol, which tastes very sweet, so children do like it. A piece of chewing gum after a candy-binge is the right thing to have, for the teeth. (We also recommend probiotics, healthy diet and exercise, to stay healthy otherwise. Lots of Finnish research on that! Finns used to have severe heart-problems, it is much better now. Liquorice (salmiakki) is not recommended for those who have elevated blood pressure, so it is typically just a young people's thing.)
@MultiCanis
@MultiCanis 3 жыл бұрын
@@DNA350ppm Actually there is salmiakki that people with high blood pressure can eat! You just have to find one without glycyrrhizin in it. Finnish company Namitupa makes that kind of salmiakki, and it's so good! (though also more expensive than the regular stuff) Pregnant women can also eat it without having to worry about their baby, so that's why it's been called "raskaussalmiakki" or "pregnancy salmiakki".
