I grew up in the UK during the bombing campaigns of the 70s and 80s. When I moved to the US, I figured our view of gun violence was as exaggerated as the American fear of bombs. Until my local Safeway was surrounded by police as someone held it up. And I drove past a police car with the cop pointing a gun at a motorist. And I was pulled over at a checkpoint on my way to a funeral as they were searching for someone on a k*lling spree. Maybe not so exaggerated after all.

I'm Dutch, and the daily traffic jams show very clearly that a lot of Dutch people do drive their cars here in the Netherlands. Of course, an American tourist visiting only the city centre of Amsterdam might get such a completely warped impression that all Dutch people only ride bicycles... The public transport system also has a *lot* of room for improvement (high prices, limited availability in rural areas, delays, filled to the brim in rush hour etc.).

If you're fired, you're fired. You need to have done something very wrong to get fired, but you're fired that day. What we can't do is just fire someone for no reason because we have laws protecting workers' rights.
@timmyymmit615Ай бұрын
The thing is you dont get a notice youre getting fired right? You screw up something, go to work next day and you get told youre fired. In most of europe you get a notice that by the end of the next month (for example) youre getting fired. You can also quit on the spot (when getting fired) but you get a 3 month pay.
@SalazarsCatАй бұрын
I also heard that they don't fire you right away. At least in most European countries. Thanks for the comments!
@jimtheudbАй бұрын
@SalazarsCat gross misconduct is an instant dismissal. It would likely take longer if something has to be investigated, but you don't get notice for being fired. You would get notice if you're being made redundant, and the company has to try to find you work elsewhere in the company before letting you go (with a nice redundancy payout normally). I was amazed when I found out you have pretty much zero workers' rights/protection in the US and can be let go for no reason with no notice.
@jimtheudbАй бұрын
@timmyymmit615 not quite, you normally have a 2-3 month notice period in your employment contract (I was amazed when I heard these aren't standard in the US) which means you have to work your notice period if you quit. It also means the same if you're made redundant, you'll have 2-3 months to find a new job before you're let go. If you're fired, you wouldn't get paid the 2-3 months notice period.

I get that about smoking in Europe. I live in the UK and there's not a huge amount of smoking, but over in France - it's almost like it's illegal NOT to smoke.

From the UK: we use a weird mixture of metric and imperial actually. Weights in grams, volume in litres, except beer is done in pints. Distances are miles, and height of a person is usually in feet and inches, but building a house is all done in metres and centimetres, and the vast majority of our maths problems at school are metric.
@SalazarsCatАй бұрын
It's a confusing system, probably only someone who has lived in the UK for a long time can really understand it. Thank you for your comment, your subscription will really help my channel!

Building a house, or most other things id I'm millimetres to avoid confusion. Milk and beer are pints because... tradition. My GP says I am 85 kilos and 180 centimetres tall - not 13 stone and 6 feet.

@@SalazarsCat Not confusing at all. You deliver a baby in an NHS hospital (no charge) and the paediatrician will record her weight in grams. The midwife will do a quick conversion so that you can tell everyone that you had a healthy seven-pound baby. As she grows, all her developmental records will be in grams - so no confusion. TBH - thee biggest confusion is that we buy fuel in litres, but measure consumption I'm MPG.

Every meal don't last 3 hours in France. Lunch break is set by law at 30 minutes minimum. The real allocated time depends on each branch and each company but can't be lower than 30 minutes. Manual workers usually get 30 minutes to 1 hour. And nowadays, 1 hour is the most common. For the others, it's commonly 1 and a half hour or 2 hours. Then you have cadres and top management that have a base time for lunch break as business lunches can often last longer. Outside work, it depends on the occasions and it can last for way more than 3 hours.
@SalazarsCatАй бұрын
It is quite interesting to hear these facts. Perhaps the tourist exaggerated a little, since the length of the lunch was still surprising to him. Thanks for the comment. New video every day, your subscription will really help my channel!

I always have to laugh when the Americans talk about Europe. Sometimes they don't even know where Europe is on the map. Europe has 47 countries and 60 languages. Around 700 million people live in Europe on an area of almost 11 million square kilometers, making Europe even larger in area than the USA. The culture in Europe is older than that of the USA. The Americans don't even have their own language, let alone culture. The language originally comes from the British Empire, the culture is a conglomerate of Europe, Asia and Africa. Or the European Union, with its 27 countries, you don't need a visa to travel through the EU and the euro is used everywhere. Life and culture in Europe is a hundred times better than in the USA. The USA has the most homeless people in the world. Or the quality of our food here in Europe. A quality and variety that is completely unknown in the USA. Europe also includes Russia, the largest country in the world, which even lies on two continents, Europe and Asia.

@@SalazarsCat I know that my answers are sometimes a bit harsh. As a German, I have also been embarrassed by German tourists abroad. For me, it is completely normal and natural, thanks to my upbringing, to find out in advance what the rules of behavior and decency are in the country I want to visit. Then I learn certain politeness and manners, because I am a guest in this country and am therefore automatically subject to the laws that apply there. So I will do everything I can to avoid attracting negative attention. The locals don't have to understand me, I have to understand the locals, because I want something from the locals and not the other way around. To my horror, I have discovered that many Americans have an extremely poor education (general education). I would like to describe it like this: Americans have a geocentric worldview and the rest of them have a heliocentric worldview (Americans always think they are the center of the world and the world must revolve around them). With this way of thinking, Americans have lost touch with the educated and civilized world.
