Chicken "chop" and Malaysian "western" food are actually Hainanese style cooking made for the British when we were colonized. Cheese baked rice is actually a Hong Kong style baked fried rice with cheese topping and usually seafood. Just some trivia I thought you'd enjoy. :)

I'm pretty certain Logesh knows this is one "version" of western food in Malaysia. You could get other versions in places such The Ship, Victoria Station, Tony Romas. Then you have the clubhouse versions - Selangor Club, Lake Club...The real deal western food including steak is available at certain specialised restaurants (for examples a few in Changkat Bukit Bintang KL) and at five star international hotels that employ western or western trained chefs.

Malaysianised 'western' food are mostly adaptations of British meals 'perfected' by the Hainanese (Hailam) cooks who used to work as chefs for the British when they were here as colonialists. The famous Hailam tea, roti bakar with butter and kaya, cream custurd pie, sago gula Melaka, steamed chicken rice, sheperd's pie, lamb stew and mee Hailam basah are some of the most savoury eating experiences one can enjoy.

Malaysian western food, especially if it is a local brand, has English influence rather than American. The local Hailam people kinda infused Colonial influence and created their western food. America was never part of this influence.

haha. 15% i almost got it right. yes. malaysian western food (eg: steaks, pasta, chops, etc) are... well malaysianized typecasted stereotyped food.but there are some shops that make it much more accurate to american, or british cuisine. but those... don't get really popular with the locals as much. it's like 'haiya, why so few gravvy, i paid big bucks no gravy. walaoweh steak so expensive but inside still pink not cooked. amende ni wei, buat spagheti kering je, apsal sos sikit sgt? ngapa bah ini spagheti aglio olio nda ada ayam/udang. kosong saja bah'. so.... yeah. the 'western' food got 'localized' to fill local demands unless its those specialist irish, english, swedish, american places though that try to keep it as authentic.

Hey folks, give the guy a break. So what!!! He didn't actually make a mistake. If you're a home-grown Malaysian, "Chicken Chop" is Kung Foo Malaysian Western mah!. But honestly Bro Kumaar, we have a heck of a lot of western restaurants here that are truly authentic (for some, check out Mr "Missing_Link" below), but could burn a hole in your pocket. To me, I would look at the big picture ... in most of your other videos, you've promoted Malaysia with a warmth that comes from the heart. Heck, people, his better-half even had (if my memory serves me right) Maggie Mee pedas with her father and they survived. Good on Rachel, and oh, to your dad too - great sports. Hi Kumar, Rachel & Fam. If you are still in Msia when you read this, try D'Tavern in Port Klang. It serves Western Food. Menu is not too big, and the food is simple and not pretentious. It's owned by a jovial guy that everyone calls Uncle George. Their lamb shank is to die for. Rachel, Malaysian are very picky eaters. I always said, a lot of Western fast-food n one of them is KFC. as soon as it landed in Malaysia, it is fine-tuned to Malaysian acceptable flavor. when my kids take KFC, they always said not as good as Malaysia KFC n totally stop going to KFC in US. Western food in Malaysia is like malaysian cooking with addition of something that is not from local, like potatoes, bell pepper, french fries and baked beans. the steak has to be fully cooked that way otherwise Malaysian(who never travel out n live in other country) wont know how to eat/stomach it. I only learnt how to stomach medium raw steak wen I moved to US. I used to eat my steak like that, welldoned in Malaysia but not anymore. If U want authentic western food, it has to be operated by westerner in Malaysia. I heard Kenny Rogers has a franchize food chain there before but I don know now . . .

My go to for American cuisine in Malaysia is Betty's Midwest Kitchen in Aman Suria, PJU. While for Malaysian inspired Western Cuisine, my go to would be Kaki Corner in Taman Billion , 56000 Kuala Lumpur. Happy food hunting, peeps

I'm Malaysian and I can confirm if there's a Malaysian shop (except the fancy one) usually the western is bad.

Never ask for medium cooked steaks in a localised western food place in Malaysia. The steaks are cut too thin. Rare or medium rare is the way to go. If there is no bone on the lamb then its probably a lamb shoulder but yeah it's still different and yes, lamb chops and steaks are rare treats for many of us when we were growing up here. Chicken chop is so quintessentially Malaysian and I love it. I don't think you can get anything like that anywhere else (well maybe in Singapore but that's a whole other argument altogether!). Every stall has its own twist on the oriental sauce. You should also try fish and chips in Malaysia. Its like nothing in the UK or the USA. Any westerner here in Malaysia should try all of the above though. At least once. It's our interpretation of food in the west. Just like many offerings in US Chinese takeouts taste nothing like authentic Chinese food. Its not like the food in the west but its OUR western food!

A good steak is so expensive in KL now, maybe because the imported beef is more expensive. A good one now costs about $200/300 a steak. The best one is supposed to be at Hilton Sentral..that starts I think at $400

You can get a cheap cut and still make it taste great by the way you marinate and cook it, just as you can take a cut of wagyu and screw it up.
@RajeshRavindranathan
@RajeshRavindranathan 3 жыл бұрын
@@DP-zd8fr actually you can't. You need to get your temperature for the perfect steak to a degree that your "normal" household grills are not capable of, that's why most of the good steak houses have them imported from Germany etc and a Steak is one of the only dish that doesn't depend on the marination or the way to cook it but the quality of the beef itself, and if your grill has enough heat to caramelize the top layer of the meat and holding the juices inside it without drying up. One can screwup even wagyu no doubt, For the best steak, (you can check this yourself) only requires the very basic seasoning..pepper and salt and zero marination. Of course the western food in malaysia are not the same like what in the western countries. Best way to say it 'malaysian style western food'. Also dont forget, the italian food in the US, doesnt really the same like whats in Italy.
