Super high taxes??? I make 50K and I pay about 28%.

Thank you for visiting! 💚 We have around 200 couples of barnacle geese nesting at our island from May to June. The species is strictly protected by EU, so we cannot disturb their nesting. That's why we have started marking the nests when they start building them: that way people can notice them more easily, and avoid the aggressive males guarding their nests. We advise to walk calmly near the nests, and keep a safety distance. During spring, we also have a "goose patrol" - staff dedicated to helping our guests with the geese! The goose patrol even knows the geese's personalities quite well, since they usually build their nests to the same place every year 😊

Just a couple of corrections: The building you called The National Museum is actually National Gallery of Art. And the building on the Citizen’s Square you referred to as a theater is actually Kiasma, the Museum of Contemporary Art (now there is a small theater inside it though) 😊 Great video, isn’t Finnish summer beautiful?

Taxes aren't actually that high in finland when compared to the the US. I've worked in both and my tax rate in the US was only 3 percent less.

I've worked as a trucker in Finland, my taxes were 41.5%...in Missouri I could earn double what I earned in Finland and pay 24%....and that's just the income tax. All other taxes are super high as well, living standard is much much higher in the US.

Avg. Gross tax rate (kokonaisveroaste) in finland is 44,1%. You have to remember the amount of fees that are comparable to taxation we have to pay. Yes, you can lower this number with living choices. (e.g. not having a car, which is totally not necessary in Helsinki)

This was a really nice video. I just wish to correct something. We don´t pay "super high taxes". The income taxation in Finland is strongly progressive. This means that only the wealthiest population pay high taxes. People with middle range wages pay much less and people with low income pay very low taxes (or zero). How ever, we do have high taxation for things like alcohol, cigarette and gasoline.

@@graalinvestment Because Finland was built on social and equality values. Finland (for the most part) helps underprivileged people like low income families, People with disabilities and the elderly. That's why there are not so many homeless people in Finland. Also, in theory, everybody has the possibility for social mobility, as there is free education for citizens until university. It is not a perfect system, but it is in the right step and I think a lot of countries should take note.

I can get it when you have disability or disease but still hard for me to believe that everyone have access to the best quality education, healthcare and be considered unprivileged. It looks a little bit unfair to me, wealthy people just realized working for someone else is boring and not profitable (not always but pretty close) do you percibe fair they have to pay more because of that? (The questions are made with a lot of respect, not judging I am just very curious and interested in your culture and learning more about Scandinavian people)

@Jose Montoya Gomez It is a complex question you are asking but i can try to explain. I wouldn’t say low income people are underpriviledged. However without a progressive tax system, lower income people would have to pay more in taxes, and when your income is low, even a small increase in taxation is going to effect your life, while on the other hand, people with high income can afford to pay a bigger portion of their income in taxes without it affecting their life in a significant way. It is considered that people with high income should pay their fair share in taxes as that is their way of contributing back to society. Cause low poverty levels, good accessible education and healthcare and equal opportunities are in everybodys interests, cause also the wealthy benefit from a stable society with a lot of purchasing power. Sorry if my answer isn’t the clearest as im a bit tired and my english might not be perfect (:

Russian culture is not very heavy in Finland. Finland was an autonomious outblast of Russian Empire and Finland could retain it's government, swedish law,swedish language, culture,own postoffice etc. Also russians had to have a special permissiin to visit Finland.

Most people who visit Finland always choose Helsinki as their destination in Finland,but Finland is a lot more than Helsinki. I intend visiting Finland but Helsinki is not on my list. Kuopio is another city in Finland, and it's situated Northeast of Helsinki. Kuopio has more lakes and forest than Helsinki.

Yeah, geese can be agressive, they hiss and bite. They're bold and attack animals much larger than themselves, they'll bite sheep in the ears and hold on for dear life. I had a goose couple in my neighborhood once, I suspect they had a nest somewhere. They would just take over walkways, blocking pedestrians, frocing them to go around the block. "you shall not pass", haha. I saw two old ladies panic when the geese confronted them, they had no idea what to do.I got attacked once, the goose got hold of my jeans and wouldn't let go, lol. I found that they're not that fast, I'd just run by them when they blocked my way. That must have seemed very threatening to them, they'd get real upset when I started running. We get 5000€ student loan every year. So if you study for 6 years you get total 30 thousand. Interest rate currently is like 0.2% so the loan is really cheap. We have free education from preschool to university. In high school you have to buy your books.

Finnish taxes are not high, especially if you're comparing living in the US: - US taxes you twice (Federal and State). For the highest tax brackets living in CA/NY you are paying > 47% - Long term capital gains is 30%. In the US it's 20% (federal) + 13.3% (state) In the US you pay for health care, child care, university... 😅

A Wanderlust For Life Only about 6 percent of us speak Swedish as our first language but we all have to study it. It’s not a fun topic of conversation. Almost everyone speaks English and prefer you to do so too unless you speak Finnish. By no means the Swedish speakers are any worse but in practice they speak better Finnish than the Finnish speakers do Swedish. Both speak English though.

It's not only the last 100 years that Finland has developed her own culture - many things continued through the Swedish and Russian eras. It wasn't like the Finns met daily Swedish speakers or especially Russians during those years. There was no media back then besides travellers, and the village elders telling of the old days. People were not immersed in the influence of the leadrs daily, propaganda wasn't a strong influencer yet. It was a slow process. For example, the Finnish language survived through those foreign overlord times. One reason is probably that it's so different. If it was related to either of those neighbours, it might have assimilated. Of course there were influenceds, but they were mainly in vocabulary. Other cultural things I could mention is the sauna, and the know-how to survive the cold winters, or the traditions how to fish and hunt, the custom to burn large bonfires in the midsummer, in some places during the Easter time too. And some clothing themes, decoration motives are Finno-Ugric - that pre-Swedish culture. And this is not all. They are just fused together with the Swedish and Russian influences + others, that are now Finnishness for the Finns. A kid learning them as a chil doesn't were the customs etc. come from, they are just the way we do things. Finns are also more reserved by their nature than Swedes or Russians. A lot is similar of course, especially with Sweden, Russian mainly in the Eastern border areas, and the most influenced parts were mainly taken by Russia during WWII, but the population of those areas was evacuated to the rest of Finland, and they've slowly assimilated.

9 years of free primary school, then 2 to 4 years in a vocational school or highschool which is "free" (the books cost a lot of money). Then come the even less "free" universities and colleges. There is also a way to get an apprenticeship contract after the 9 years of primary school, but thats rare these days, maybe if your parents own a company and you want to learn/work there. Thats how our school system goes in my eyes

There is also a year pass to Korkeasaari for 50 € for an adult, 20 € for a child between 4 and 17 years and 30 € for a student or a pensioner. So, if you plan to visit the zoo more than 3 times a day (the zoo is open every day throughout the year) the year pass is great. But, it doesn't cover boat rides (anymore). It used to cover the boat rides 15 years ago when I had the year pass.
