Here is a little fun fact about Cologne;a 'halber Hahn' is not a rooster, but a half cheese bun.You should definitely take a city tour. These are also offered in English. So you will learn about the history of the city and get to see some of the highlights of the city.

There are so many things to see and to do in Cologne which you can find in the internet. You should also be prepared regarding the history of the places you intend to visit. Also get informed about the local and/or regional food and at least try. You will find your favourites.

Cologne goes back to the ancient Romans who had a fortified place there, Colonia Agrippina, or with its full name Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium. When the French had Cologne under their authority during the Napoleonic era they had the initiative to put artefacts of the Roman era on display in a public collection. That was the origin of the present "Roman-Germanic-Museum". In 1941 during groundworks for an airraid shelter a huge and intact Roman mosaic was discovered and excavated, then covered with sand for prtection. During the reconstruction period from the late 1940s on the decision fell that it should be uncovered and a new museum was to be built over it. The museum is just opposite the cathedral and within walking distance from the main station. You should go there whenever possible. The only rival to that place is the Roman Museum in Trier. During the Roman period glassmakers from that area were fantastic craftsmen. They would produce goblets from two or three layers of coloured glass and then grind away most of the two outer layers so that only a decorative net outside the inner beaker would stay, so -called diatretglas. And if you are afraid to get bored make your way to the upper floor with Roman oillamps and other ceramics that are decorated in a way that excludes them from being shown in schoolbooks.
@CompassChronicleTravels
@CompassChronicleTravels Жыл бұрын
wow all of this info is truly great and we LOVE hearing the history. We would absolutely LOVE to visit that museum when we go back. Ironically, we are getting ready to visit Trier (we hope within the next few weeks) so we will have to look for the Roman museum when we are there. They both sound fantastic!
@christiankastorf4836

@@CompassChronicleTravels They are. The Trier museum has the famous "wine ship", I think it is the gravestone of a wine merchant. The ship looks so detailed, though the perspective is not right, and it is laden with barrels, not with jars or amphora.

So, you probably figured this out by now, but many things that are considered staples in the US are not as widely grown here. Corn and Peanuts come to mind, as well as many warm-weather fruits that have to be imported(lower quality) or grown in greenhouses (more expensive). Also higher regulatory pressure enforces more strict guidelines that prohibit many of the cost cutting measures that american farmers take for granted. You wont find a $2 rotisserie chicken anywhere in germany. Long story short: many products that enable the kind of American food culture are not accessible or prohibitively expensive. Therefore it is highly recommend to go to local "Imbiss" hole-in-the-wall restaurants that serve German, Greek, Mediterranean, Turkish or east Asian food instead of north American chains or latin American places. (At least if you want a quick, cheap meal. Of course there are good upscale places for all sorts of food cultures) Also, Brötchen from your local bakery will almost always be great :D

YES! We have noticed that! It's so wonderful though how many more options you all have in terms of quality control on your food. It's something that is really challenging (at least we think so) in the states. We have been not only blown away by the food here, but the availability of items we feel so much safer eating. We will definitely check out the Imbiss restaurants too! We have been to maybe one or two like that so far and agreed-the food was EXCELLENT! The local bakery bread is def THE BEST!

I recommend also the Botanical Gardens called Flora, my favorite Café, a vegan Café called Café Rotkehlchen (I like the one near Chlodwigplatz or the one in Ehrenfeld). When I visit cities I always just walk around and enjoy different districts, so I recommend visiting the Südstadt (around Chlodwigplatz), the Zülpicherstraße is a student area with a wonderful little Cinema called Off Broadway and many cheap bars and restaurants, Belgisches Viertel is a beautiful area for window shopping... If you wanna go out and get to know the German Techno scene I would recommend Ehrenfeld... Also there are many beautiful museums and galleries.

Oh, you have been to my home city😊 Even though I've seen the cathedral so many times, I'm so impressed every I look up to it. You've gotten so many tips already but I also would like to share my personal recommendations for Cologne and sorroundings: - Visiting the cathedral again and going upstairs. It's kinda hard (my fitness level isn't that well) but you can see the "Dicke Pitter", the largest bell of the Kölner Dom -Take a walk at the old town and the waterfront, have a stop and drink a Kölsch in a Brauhaus. -Visiting Phantasialand, an amusement park in Brühl near Cologne, it's my favorite German Park after Europapark - Drachenfels in Königswinter, with it's castle/palace. You can have a stunning view over the Rhein and the Siebengebirge. It's possible to hike or go by an old cog railway -One benefit of living in or near Cologne is the short distance to the Netherlands❤ If you haven't been there already maybe you have a stay for a full weekend and take a trip to Maastricht or shopping in Roermond? I've also read you like zoos, my favourite is also in the Netherlands and called "Burgers Zoo" in Arnhem. It has got a massive aquarium, a tropical and desert hall and a wide safari enclosure😊 Sorry for the long comment😅 It's really fun to watch your videos and listen to your experiences and opinions. You seem really cool, kind and friendly ❤

I can not recommend the south of cologne enough. There you have the best burger joint in and around cologne, called "Die Fette Kuh" and on the same street there are a bunch of specialty coffee shops where you will get a coffee recommendation from an actual barista. There is also a shop called "Bierlager" on this street which caters to a wide variety of craft beer. If you want authentic food from cologne I would recommend "Päffgen Brauhaus" which is closer to the center, has amazing food and one of the better locally brewed beers.

Well done guys. 👍 Next time you gotta try an original Cologne brewerie with Cologne beer which is called „Kölsch“. The „Löwenbräu“ you guys went in is also good, but actually it‘s a Bavarian brand and brewerie. When you go there in summertime you should go for a drink to the „Rheinterrassen“ on the other side of the river (within walking distance over the Hohenzollern bridge). There you can enjoy the sunset outdoors with an exceptionell view on the Cologne Cathedral.

You should go to one of the original old family owned brewerys in Cologne like Mühlenkölsch or Päffgen. They brew beer "Kölsch" there and had a kitchen with traditonel food. The old Cityhall near to the Dom or go to one of the old romain places or visit the old city gates.

Why is there this chocolate factory in Cologne? It all started in the late 1830s when Franz Stollwerck opened his factory for sweets in that town. Soon after he began with the production of chocolate as well. The museum was added in the 1990s to demonstrate the ways chocolate is processed and to put items of Stollwerck's own history on display, e.g. lots of highly decorated vending machines that Stollwerck had placed at railway stations and other areas where lots of potential customers could be expected. From 1972 the factory belonged to some Hans Imhoff. Sadly Stollwerck is not an independent brand anymore. They now belong to some Belgian company and moved away from Cologne. The museum was taken over by Lindt % Sprüngli and renamed after Hans Imhoff, but lots of objects in relation to the Stollwerck company were removed.

Hi there! new subscriber here 🙂You are welcome! I hope you have airconditioning or know how to survive in your home without ac during summer in germany😉, because ac running is expensive. It maybe another hot summer this year! For nuts and dry fruits, i recommend any prodcut of Seeberger. It costs a bit more than other brands, but in my opinion their nuts and dry food taste the best. Prodcuts of Seeberger are serverd in Tüten. You find them normally in any grocery story. As for unique and interesting things to explore on a longer visit in Cologne, i suggest the St.Ursula Church. Just because of the Golden Room. It is a small room with about 50 skulls visible. If you enter the St.Ursula Church, you have to find the keeper. If you are lucky he or she is nearby the entry or is somewhere in the church. But it is a big PLUS if you are able to speak german. I am not sure if every keeper understand english. It cost extramoney to enter the Golden Room and you are not allowed to go alone inside the room. If you look at some photos in the internet, you have seen the Golden Room for free. But it has its own atmosphere beeing there in natural in my opinion. The St.Ursula Church itself is free and not comparable wit the chatedral. I assume you are living close to Wiesbaden and you like castles. And fortress and Palaces. Check out the Kurhaus in Wiesbaden. The roman fortress Saalburg i can only recommend if you are interested in roman history and if you understand written german as 90%of the info cards are written in german language only. Of course it cots entry fee. If you like roman architecture, i recommend a small roman house in Aschaffenburg. It was builded in the 19th century. Everything is in german only. If you are intersted how ordinary germans lived in the 18th and 19th century and beginning of the 20th century, i recommend the Hessenpark. But you should be able to understand written german. If you like plants from around the globe, i recommend the Palmengarten in Frankfurt am Main. And check out the rebuilded oldtown of Frankfurt am Main. It is small, but nice. I suggest the oldtown of Idstein. LaureninGermany made a video about Idstein. It is also small oldtown. If you are there, check out the Unionskirche, Unionchurch. I suggest a visit of the small oldtown of Limburg an der Lahn and go inside the cathedral there. I suggest a walk alongside the Lahnriver from the old lahnbridge untill Dietkirchen and then turn round and go back to the old lahnbridge in Limburg. Close to Limburg is Runkel an der Lahn. It has a smallr oldtown, but a mighty castleruin. Maybe the Schloss Weilburg in Weilburg an der Lahn is something for you. But take a guided tour. And check out the small Schlosspark. I suggest the fake Schloss Braunfels. By the way there is a town in Texas call New Braunfels. Maybe you like the oldtown of Wetzlar an der Lahn. Going right from Wiesbaden now, check out the Schloss Bad Homburg vor der Höhe and the Schlosspark also. You may like the castle Ruin of Königstein im Taunus. It costs also entry fee and dont forget to bring a light with you! There is a section of that ruin where you need light for a minute. I recommend Kronberg im Taunus and Oberursel im Taunus. I recommend the Schloss Friedrichshof in Kronberg. Better klnown as Schlosshotel. Before Corona there were guided tours for free through some parts of the Schlosshotel. I dont know if they still offer that and i am not sure if they offer an english speaking tour exclusivley. You may enjoy the town of Gelnhausen. The biggest ruined castle at the Rhine River is the Castle Rheinfels. If you enjoy zoos, i recommend the Fasanerie near Wiesbaden or the Tierpark near Weilburg an der Lahn. Both zoos have no exoctic animals, but just common wild animals of Germany, but still cool. The Opelzoo in Kronberg is cool. Got Elefants, Giraffen, but no Lions, Tigers or Gorialls. The real classical zoo is in Frankfurt am Main. I recommend the Neroberg in Wiesbaden and check out the russian orthodox church there. If you enjoy hiking i suggest the TaunusMountains. A walk to the Altkönig and the Großer Feldberg im Taunus. There is a Großer Feldberg im Schwarzwald. Dont mix them up. At the Feldberg there is a tower. With some fee you can go upstairs and look around the horizon. If you are in Idstein, i recommed you drive by car to the Kreuzkapelle Bad Camberg. Park your car somewhere there and walk to the Kruzkapelle and down and left and up and back to the car. Just for the view. Bad Camberg got also an oldtown, but it is really small. You can walk from Bad Camberg up to the Kreuzkapelle and go back to Bad Camberg. But it is some kilometers. I guess about 2 to 3 kilometers and 2 to 3 kilometers back. So about 5 kilometers in whole, For Fortress, the Fortress Ehrenbreitstein in Koblenz is great. But cost entry fee aswell. There is still so much to explore in all of Germany, it would take more than a liftime to see all and everything. Those are just suggestions and recommentions around Wiesbaden.

As you mentioned, it would take a lifetime--but we are going to try! haha. Love all the nearby suggestions too! Some days we have just enough time to get somewhere closer by and love the options! @@CompassChronicleTravels Things you can do when you are again in Cologne, to go upstairs to the top of the tower. I dont know if they let climb up anyone when the bells are ringing. You definitively dont want to be nearby when the bells ring. Maybe they offer a guided tour to the bells room there when they are ringing. If so for sure they will offer ear protection. Maybe you are allowed to bring your own earmuffs with you. I dont know. Anyhow if they offer such a tour to the bells room when they ring. Anyway, if you manage to go up and down the cologne cathedral tower without knee or legs problems and rest of your health fits too, you can go up the tallest church tower of the world in the city of Ulm, Southern Germany. Cologne got 533 steps and a height about 100 meters compaired to Ulm with 768 steps and a height of about 143 Meters. The Church tower in Ulm itself is about 160 Meters, but 143 Meter is the maximum what one can climb. 😃 Both stairs are made of stone. For cologne, it takes about 5 minutes to go up if you are fit and dont experience much oppsoing traffic. It can be narrow then and take longer than 5 Minutes. The Towers were not builted for crowds of people. Both buildings got a spiral staircase and no elevator. And it can be windy i guess. But in my opinion the most beautyfull church bells in all of Europe sounds in the french city of Straßburg. But just when all bells are ringing together, which of course doenst happen often. I do not know how much interested you are in the Cathedral of Cologne, but it took more than 600 years to builted that thing, with several breaks of course. Why? No Money. The longest break took about 300 years. It was completed in 1880. The weight is about 120.000.000 kilogramm or 120.000 tons. 1 ton = 1000 kilogramm. If you would want to copy and rebuilted it, you would need a train of 100 kilometers full with building material only. If you wondered why the cathedral is that black, industrial dust and exhaust gases turned it this black during decades. When you look on it, you have to imagine a pure white Cathedral. And this industrial dust is the reason why stones of the cathedral have to be replaced every certain times and thats why you see this scaffolding hanging at the cathedral. It is a mobile scaffolding and took years to go around one time. But littery it is, when they replaced a stone at Point A and go around and come back after years to Point A, they need to replace the replaced stone with a new one and so on. They replace everytime some stones. Thats the way it is since 1880, when the catherdal was finished and will very likey be so untill the end world go down. 🙂 When you understand proper german, i recommend the documentation "Superbauten die Geschichte vom Kölner Dom"

Hehe, I could have warned ya: any Mexican or TexMex restaurants in Germany have been germanized. Germans tend to suck at handling spicy food so often restaurants that were opened by 'natives' of the region had to be toned down and adapted. Others not owned by people from the area simply fail at getting the original taste profile right. Similar to many Thai or other Asian restaurants. However there are the exceptions that truly excel; finding them is a stroke of luck. Edit: 12:37 I hope you saw that sign on the wall:"Alt genug, um es besser zu wissen. Jung genug, um drauf zu scheißen." = "Old enough to know it better. Young enough not to give a shit (lit. Young enough to shit on it"). no, Düsseldorf is the fashion city, Cologne is known as the media city and party city.

I have never in my entire life heard someone refer to Cologne as the fashion city of Germany. As someone else already mentioned that's Düsseldorf, the city next to Cologne. Cologne itself is like the farthest thing from chic that I can imagine. ;)

Next time try to avoid the touristy spots/Restaurants, as they aren't really authentic

Yes we definitely will! We only were there a few hours for that day but we want to take a full weekend and really explore there. Seems like you could really spend a lot of time in Cologne. Can’t wait!

We DEFINITELY will. It was not a great day weather wise, and not a ton of time even. There is SOOO much to see here that we will plan a full weekend where we can really dive in to the town.

@@CompassChronicleTravels yeah i heard from many other americans that mexican food is not very good here in Germany or it's rare to find. Thats makes sense because we don't have many mexican people living here. And Germans are also known for not liking spicy or hot food in general. Of course thats not all Germans but definitely the majority. You can find great Italian or Greek food here and of course Turkish food as we have many people who originate from these countries living here.

We do eat local quite often, though I know it can probably be hard to tell sometimes from the videos. The local food has been 👌🏼👌🏼 just excellent. We love a great variety of things so it all depends on what we are in the mood for. Hoping to make it to a couple other local places though soon and will likely film it when we do 🤗

Americans visiting a Country on a different continent, get Mexican Food, wonder why it is (a continent away from Mexico) is expensive... Try some local foods ffs, something you can not get at home... 😂

We actually live here now so I promise we eat local food too lol. But we like all cuisine so we are always going to eat all sorts of good food. We have learned though that good Mexican food is less common and have enjoyed the quality of local food much more 👍🏼

@@CompassChronicleTravels Your video was great either way. 😁 I am from Germany, lived over 20 years in the US, and I am back home now, but I must say I miss a lot of Murican and Mexican foods (although that is debatable, as Mexican food in the US is not exactly authentic) - so I am actually not that impressed with most german cuisine. I am not sure why that is, but I guess it has to do with less sugar and fat... I have yet to find Doritos in Germany that taste as satisfying as in the US 🤔 ☺. This was the first video of yours I came across, I am curious to check out more of your stuff.
