He suffered ptsd and lived in virtual poverty. Bloody disgusting way for a hero to go.

Most Australians don’t know the man’s name. Shouldn’t take a Swedish power metal band to give the man the credit he deserves,

Great comment Jason, the problem is that no one can get a VC unless the act of valor is reported by an Australian or British commissioned officer. The highest award they can get is the Military Medal. My grandfather Milford is in the same boat as Bull. He got a Military Medal as his act of valor was reported by a Sergeant. and not commissioned office. If you read the citation that got him the Military Medal what he did was definitely entitled to get the VC.

Thanks for reacting to this one. Never really took to this song until now, which says something about the importance to experience music "together" with other people (Touchy and the Touchy Community in this case). I seem to remember that The Last Stand is already on the list, but I'll second that suggestion anyway. Another song that's a little different is The Royal Guard (which I know is on the list). These are very far from songs like Fields of Verdun and The Lion From the North, but they are pretty powerful in their own way.

The American Government awarded Bull the Silver Star the highest award they can give to a Non American Citizen, Many men who were there not knowing that said he deserved the Medal Of honor, As well they said unlike official records he rescued somewhere around 17 or 18 men not 12 and his actions there were even braver and more selflesss than recent VC recipient Pvt Nolan who under fire rescued his platoon commander and retreived the body of the platoons forward scount killing a number of NVA in the process. Bull did rescue more under Machine Gun, Mortar and sniper fire and as a stretcher bearer he was unarmed. Twelve Americans were saved that day at least and he was recognised by the USA and even Eleanor Rooseveldt who stayed in touch writing a number of times to congratulate him when he got married to follow up appreciation for the number of American Soldiers who fell wounded or unconscious from mortar bomb induced concussion that he saved that day on Mount Tambur near salamau Lae area of operations. Leslie "Bull" Allen deserves the Victoria Cross just as many veterans of that battle said he deserved the Medal of Honor

Just noting a little thing here. You mentioned "Price of a mile" here, and it's not the first time that you talk a little about it in a reaction to another song. I know you said you didn't like the song, and I understand why, but you coming back to it says something. While maybe it's not instantly likeable, it's a story that is worth thinking of, and the song also have that something extra. Don't throw it away after just one try, I didn't like it much after the first time, but now it's one of my favourites. :)

I've somehow missed the history video on this one until now. I knew the generalities of Bull's story just from the song and what I know of WWII, but I didn't know some of the details. And I my have ruined this song a little bit for myself now that I know Australia did him dirty not recognizing his actions like that. My reaction was exactly the same as yours when I heard that.

Regarding the Australian Military Beauocracy and political class as far as recognising Leslie 'Bull "Allen it was only a couple of years back they awarded the first Victoria Cross for the Royal Australian navy for WW2 to Seaman Edward "Teddy "Sheean for his actions in the Arafura Sea north of Darwin Australia on December 1st 1942 where he strapped himself to the Oeirkolon 20mm Anti Aircraft Gunfighting bach against the Japanese Vals and Zero fighters straffing his shipmates in the water after the captain gave orders to abandon ship after taking heavy damage as the smalll frigate had turned toward the enemy battle fleet of Cruisers and Destroyers to give the rest of the convoy they were escorting from the East Indies to Darwin some chance to escape, Some but not all did as the Gallant Captain and his crew fought against overwhelming odds. Teddy Sheean after 75 Years was finally recognised and awarded the Victoria Cross, But there are probably at least a dozen more Naval personnel worthy of such recognition such as the Captain Hec Waller of HMAS Perth whose ship went down fighting alongside USS Houston in Sunda Straight off Java r the Houstons captain I believe received Posthumously the MOH
