Hello ASL Heroes!!! Hey, if you are in a position to, I could really use your help. If you’ve enjoyed having access to an expert in ASL you can help me continue my work for you. A small monthly donation from you would instantly make a big difference here at the studio because teachers don’t earn much and I could use some help paying for server and domain hosting for Lifeprint.com. Right now you can help out a humble (not to mention kind, caring, generous, compassionate, helpful, friendly, fair, and hard-working) ASL teacher -- just go here and a few clicks later you too will be a true “ASL Hero!” www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=64QMBRBXQSV6G Thanks! - Dr. Bill p.s. Want to have your very own USB drive with four semesters worth of ASL videos (that’s the equivalent of two years of colleges classes) for just $79.95? See "SuperUSB" in the ASLUniversity bookstore at: lifeprint.com/bookstore/bookstore.htm Take care and love to you all. :)

I've taught with blood running down my leg (after a table collapsed while I was moving it and it scraped down my shin). I've taught while wearing wrist braces due to repetitive motion syndrome. I've taught 6-hour workshops after getting only one hour of sleep due to a flight delay. I've taught while being careful to not turn around due to having split my pants. I've taught 12-hours a day for a week (when an evening instructor took ill and needed a sub), I've taught after accidentally cutting the web between my left thumb and index finger (while hurriedly prepping practice cards). I keep a "pro-level" band-aid and a few inches of KT tape in my wallet at all times.

I am happy to say, I took you up on getting the training center subscription that you put together. I know a lot of the stuff from a ASL1 so in 2 already since I do nothing but watch your videos practically every day they come up. there were a few signs that I did learn so that is always good. I have nothing much else to do so sometimes I can't sleep and I'm up watching your videos and taking quizzes LOL. I like that it shows videos in slow motion and regular speed while explaining what was said so I can replay them. It helps keep an idea of how other people might sign.

I'm glad that you mentioned the prom symbol from Switched at Birth. It was one that I had picked up from the show (lots of Deaf actors, Marlee Matlin, etc.) but sometimes it would get weird with its ASL.

There is such an incredible amount of variety out there! I sometimes sort of think that online ASL teachers (such as myself) should all get in the habit of stating where we live and where we picked up most of our signing. That way students could seek out instructors from their home state or region. I've made it a general habit to try to teach the most common version of a sign on a nation-wide basis and reduce regional signs if possible. That way my students will generally be able to get their message across and then pick up local variations via interaction with local Deaf at Deaf Events, Deaf coffee socials and ASL get-togethers.

9:40 so when your daughter first got in to culinary school, and she came over to see you, and she would leave her school papers around your house, would you tell her to clean up her new cooking-school papers before she left?

One of my ASL teachers taught me to make a clicking sound with my mouth while signing "tend." What's the deal with that & is it always required? A regional thing maybe?
@sign-language
@sign-language 4 жыл бұрын
You are referring to what came to be known as "Deaf Bing!" Which became an idiom that meant: "Deaf tend to ..." Then it became very popular in many online vlogs to share "Deaf Bings" -- as small / interesting examples of Deaf Culture. Whether or not that clicking sound or "bing" stands the test of time is yet to be seen but it certainly is/was a real thing. It is my "opinion" that realistically the "mouth morpheme" of clicking or making a plosive or mouthing "bing" really should only apply to the sharing of cultural tidbits and not to the general sign for "TEND." However the fact that "some" ASL teachers are teaching TEND has having a mouth morpheme may impact the "adoption" process. Personally I'd be just as happy to see it fade out. We can still honor and discuss Deaf culture without having to do an overly exaggerated "bing" mouth movement (or a click or a plosive). Keep in mind though that it is your local teacher who gives the grade for your class. Sign the way your local teacher wants until you get the grade you want. Then go out into your local Deaf Community and learn how to sign like the local, socially active, adult, Deaf. skilled signers. (Who may or may not currently be doing that click when they sign TEND.) For example, my wife (who is also Deaf) can't stand that inflection of the TEND sign. So I recommend we all just stay flexible and see it that version sticks around.

This video makes me frustrated. I’m not good at spelling and they kept spelling instead of typing on the screen. We’re learning ASL. We need more explanation when you sign something new. I have no idea what you was talking about your boss around 30:40. You spelled super fast.

Tip: If you are concerned about missing any important vocabulary words in a lesson you can go to my website and use the links in the lessons to make sure you are getting the important stuff. See: www.lifeprint.com/asl101/lessons/lesson39.htm Keep in mind that you don't need to catch every little thing that is spelled. You don't need to understand every bit of the video. Just keep watching and pick up what you can. Think of yourself as a plant being watered. Plants don't need to catch all the water -- just enough to keep growing. I encourage you to learn how to control the KZbin video player in order to benefit the most from the time you invest watching videos. It helps to watch the videos on a desktop or laptop internet browser with a full-size keyboard and use keyboard shortcuts to pause and then advance frame by frame to catch difficult fingerspelling. To play or pause a video click on the spacebar. To jump backward 5 seconds use the "left arrow" key. While the video is paused, move to the next frame by pressing the period key "." While the video is paused, go back to the previous frame by pressing the comma key "," Speed up the video playback rate by pressing SHIFT and "." (which is how you type ">") Slow down the video playback rate by pressing SHIFT and "," (which is how you type "
