As an American A'tin fan of SB19 their back story is so compelling. Yes, they trained for 4 years with ShowBT but the company was far from big time. It was meant to be an event company not a major management company. SB19 members had to do the hard work of finding sponsers like Dunkin PH, Pepsi, Acer, TM PUSUAN and many more especially during the covid pandemic. While many American Musicians sat out the pandemic SB19 had Online concerts performed at Areneta Coliseum and livestreamed to fans all over the world! I watched a two day concert on Christmas Eve and Christmas day 2021 and it was less than $30.00 US. Best concert I ever saw! These guys are dreamers and have made their dreams come true but with lots of hard work and sacrifice! Even their own country didn't believe in them and that's why their lyrics are so personal. Each member has also launched their solo careers as well. You might like some of Ken's solos. He goes by Felip, his given name. Check out Fake Faces, Konako and Bulan. In my view, PPOP is unique because groups like SB19 don't stick to just one genre. They explore various styles, including EDM, R&B, Ballad, Rock, and Upbeat, which I find impressive.

SB19 became viral in Twitter not in KZbin. Aside from their humble beginnings which you can watch through chucks channels also from ep 1-6, they're way way more talented than you could ever imagine. They sing, dance, rap, choreograph, composed, produced, and direct their own songs, dances and music videos. They called PPOP KINGS and LIVE MONSTERS here.. because they performed singing, rapping, and dancing here LIVE. Their songs are incredible that some of it went up to billboard hot trending song beating BTS (#2), SB19 Bazinga (#1). They became the first filipino to sing in First Take channel too. And they just won recently as the Favorite Asian Act in Nickelodeon Kids Choice Award. And too many to mentions of their achievements. So Proud of them. They indeed paved the way of PPOP. They're now self-managed. They have their own company.

I agree, Pop is pop just where it is marketed. There are distinct sounds for example Jpop. The lyrics are indeed the big differences. P-pop is establishing a distinct identity, influenced by surrounding genres yet distinguished by its unique characteristics. The genre is gaining momentum, with bands such as SB19 expanding the limits of P-pop and challenging the norms of the industry. This blend not only highlights the unique local essence but also reflects a global trend of musical innovation and cross-cultural unity. SB19 essentially became self-taught, as their former company lacked the financial resources to support them. The boys were instructed in self-presentation as idols and in physical conditioning. However, it was up to them to determine their dynamic as a group. Pablo, the leader, wrote all their lyrics and composed them. Stell and Ken did their Choreographies. Justin started directing their music videos when the pandemic began. Josh knows where they should head to together with his brothers. They want to help the Ppop community grow. They began their own company, 1Z ENTERTAINMENT back in 2021. They officially launched it on October 1st, 2023.

it was literally DIY when they started. ShowBT was not a big budget company. the boys had to do things on their own. write their song. do their prod. etc. they would have to go home after a grueling training day or sleep in the studio (coz they didnt have enought money or place to stay). times where they didnt even have money to eat and walk far just to get to practice. they didnt have it easy. so blood, sweat and tears were their investment.

Very well said. It's because of SB19. They paved the way for PPOP to blew up in year 2022 (the Golden Era of PPOP). SB19 cracked or broke the barriers in PPOP to be recognized globally. And SB19 set the highest standard of PPOP. This is why I love SB19 so much.

It is really true what you said with so many good singers here the standard bar is already high. Most who gets more attention basically are the moneyed producers while hundreds more are struggling artists who deserve to be on stage and limelight some are even better. Sb19 got the best of 2 worlds. They may got the proper training and discipline from the Korean company but the talent is 100% homegrown. They make their own music and sound thst is fresh in the industry. Other P idols get away with the usual showbiz tactics and exposure. I think SB19 goal even from the beginning is world domniation while others are competing for local consumption only because the journey is almost impossible. Others may claim otherwise but SB19 really paved for PPOP and even made it to Billboard. So we are talking global and not just nationwide. But they are always humbled by their own beginnings and their love for the country. So that sets them apart and so are most of their loyal fans who came from all generations from kids to grandparents. Am a fan not just because they are talented but also because they have a good set of mind between their shoulders.

You guys have to understand Philippines English is different from American English. Sometimes some terms have different definitions or even over exaggerated at times. So Idol just means what it is. Group Idol just meant the popular Filipino groups filipinos idolized. Not usually the word we normally use but it is what it is.

yeah the Philippines is a vocal power house when it comes to singing even a 2yr old baby can sing here thats why the standard was so high even when we compete in a small contest it kinda reminds me of American Idol doing a grand finals 😂 and the judges they don't judge u on how good u sing they judge always about the technicalities and how u deliver the song u choose properly bcoz they know that all of the contestants was already born to sing☺️

Filipino pop music is heavily influenced by American pop. The music evolved during the 70s with the advent of manila sound. Manila sound is styled as catchy and melodic, with smooth, lightly orchestrated, accessible folk/soft rock, sometimes fused with funk, light jazz and disco.

In a recent interview, Pablo (SB19 leader and 1Z CEO) clarified that they did not actually undergo the “Korean” training. Yes they were under Korean management and had a Korean main mentor. BUT they trained themselves, learning from each other’s skills and experiences. Chuck is not wrong, though, because that was the general knowledge or the information given to the public. SB19 never refuted that while they were under ShowBT. I think Pablo needed to clarify this to give credit to his other members who will also soon mentor the members of the new girl group under 1Z Entertainment. Thank you for your interest in Ppop. You’re just scraping the tip of the movement. There’s so much content, too many beautiful & meaningful songs from SB19 alone. Then each member has solo releases too! So much talent, they’ve set the bar so high. Yes, they paved the way for other groups!

To be clear, even though they were under a Korean company, SB19 wrote all of their music, produced/directed their own videos, and did their own choreography. They are now self managed, they own their own company called 1Z Entertainment since Oct. 2023.

Just like the leader of SB19 named Pablo, he was asked the similar question about what is Ppop and how does it differ? And Pablo answered that it's still POP genre with all its elements and they just add letter before Pop like Kpop or Ppop to distinguish where it originated. He also added that Pop from the Philippines showcases their experience which also says a lot about the culture. Pinoy sings from the heart from their lyricism down to their performance.

I think SB19's greatest contribution to PPop and OPM was raising the standards. It was the WHAT MV that redefined what an MV should be and how serious producers have to be. It's very obvious if you look at the quality of PPop music and videos before and after SB19 blew up (specifically before & after the WHAT MV). That MV woke up Filipino artists. Whether those this type of music was their cup of tea or not, they all unanimously praised SB19 for breaking what people usually expect of an MV from a mere local artist. It gave artists the justification to produce better content because often, their "higher ups" would say no and give them a low budget. You have NO IDEA how we had to endure the low-quality. I never blame the artists because they're obviously talented being Filipinos, y'know. It's just that no one is willing to drop a huge budget on content. You should see our "film festival movies"--on second thought, don't; you cannot unsee it. 😮‍💨 But after SB19's WHAT MV dropped, the jump in quality for video and music production was undeniable, to say the least. I'm not even joking; there is a reason why KPop and KDrama became dominant in the Philippines. SB19 just about saved the whole Philippine entertainment industry, not just PPop. SB19 was praised by their fellow artists (not just PPop, but artists of all kinds) for being BRAVE because nobody believed that Filipinos could create something so high-class. SB19 took the plunge anyway, trusting the process while unsure whether all this investment would be appreciated or not. They did the best they could. (Btw, the budget is 'high' for Filipino standard, but it's miles away trom what an average KPop MV budget was. With this one MV, SB19 was able to show to the Filipinos the possibilities--that we can actually make high-quality content of thw world-class level. From then on, many companies became more confident in investing on PPop groups and the rest is history. So yes, SB19 did pave the way. No one can take away that title from them because it is the truth. And the records on KZbin videos are obvious evidence of it. You just have to notice just exactly when Filipino-produced content suddenly upped in quality and you'll find SB19 smack dab in the center of it. Also to clarify: their first management company wasn't big and they actually didn't have much budget when they debuted. Hence the empty mall shows and the 'gigs'. Their 'wardrobe' was composed of Pablo's normal everyday clothes and they thrifted for shoes and used Sharpie markers to color all in black. Heck, they often shared Pablo's lunch box so when he couldn't bring lunch, they would starve for the rest of the training session. Pablo himself isn't exactly rich; he's just that kind of guy since he's used to sharing with his many siblings. For the WHAT MV, they probably used the funds gathered from activities the year prior plus some investment funds from company and certain people (they're all in the credits). But even that could not amount to much in Filipino standards. They just hired a very talented production company with the modern know-how (made up of millennials and gen z's). And this company is indeed pricey but all of that went to procuring equipment, while they all DIY'd the props and the space. The company frankly saved money since their creative director, songwriter and arranger were all in-house--Justin being the MV's creative director and Pablo being the songwriter and arranger.

PPop sounds can vary, but SB19 album can compose dark (mix pop rap and rock), emotional ballad and they will end the album with feel good thankful pop, but its not a template. Most PPop groups can do ballad tho coz the market wants it, since we, Filipinos, are emotional people. Also, we emphasize vocals and esp live vocals. Filipinos prefer hearing the live vocals, even with mistakes, over loud backtracks to lipsync. I think it is because we are forgiving people and we understand that we are just humans, as long as its real, then its good.

SB19's previous company/handler was no big time; they're essentially an events company that cater services for KPop concerts here in the Philippines and train dancers in a Korean style for special occasions and charity events. this is why SB19's early "endeavors" before debut were mostly mall shows, hotel/home-for-the-aged entertainers.
