I am 69. The Queen came to the throne the year before I was born. She was crowned just after I was born. I retired 7 years ago. The Queen has not yet retired. She receives a box of information from our government every day. Some of her cousins on the balcony, many in their 80's are still working, attending public events etc. That is service. I know as a military man you understand this. Excellent video.

@@kevingrant7098 So you are saying that a president, say the US president for example, isn't a proper job. Interesting point of view as BOTH are heads of state. Mind you, the US president only heads ONE country, the Queen is head of FIFTEEN countries AND the commonwealth, so if she doesn't have a job then the US president (or mine for that matter because I live in a republic) certainly don't have jobs. ps: the Queen of the UK (and the country where I grew up) works one h*ll of a lot harder than the president of my country does.

As ex-RAF myself, it's worth noting that the Queen is actually head of all the armed services. When we officially "join up" and take the oath of allegiance, we swear to, "Serve the Queen, her heirs and successors". We do not swear allegiance to the PM, the Government or even to a country.
@junglie5055
@junglie5055 2 жыл бұрын
Not all branches swear an oath of allegiance. The Royal Navy as the Senior Service has never been required to swear allegiance. As an aside that wasn't an RAF flypast. It was a Tri-Service flypast led by......the Royal Navy.
@bobdylan7120
@bobdylan7120 2 жыл бұрын
@@junglie5055 The Royal Navy was established by the sovereign's prerogative, so effectively belongs to the Queen already. For that reason, recruits are not required to swear allegiance, but they do sign an attestation or engagement form on entry. The fly past was organised by the RAF and it made sense to put the slower, less capable, participants such as the RN at the front. 😁 The Royal Navy is indeed the Senior Service and used to consist of men of iron manning ships of wood. Now it's the other way around! 😁

During her 70 year reign the Queen has met 14 British Prime Ministers and 13 American Presidents! Chances are, unfortunately, you'll not get the chance to ever come over and see this event. This wasn't a simple yearly Birthday event, this was to mark 70 years as the nations Queen. The classic formation of WW2 Lancaster Bomber being escorted by a Spitfire and a Hurricane is one of the great things to witness. The sound is something quite unique as they fly overhead. There was a moment during this event, when they passed overhead, that the Queen pointed up as if the sound brought back a lot of wartime memories. This is Britain at its finest. She's the longest serving 'Female' Monarch, but has 2 years to go before overtaking Louis XIV from France, thus becoming the longest of any gender.

It started with Trooping of the Colour, a ceremony about 260 years old. Where the military, in dress uniform do formal marching, with military bands. This is done in the barracks on Horse guard. It takes about 2 hours. They march to Buckingham Palace, then the flypast. Obviously there is limited amount of aircraft as it is over central London. The place is packed so I don't think much is seen by spectators. Best watched on TV, unless you can get a ticket at Horse Guards. We are renowned for our pomp and ceremony, no one beats us on that. Well worth watching on KZbin, the military personnel are all serving officers. There are horses and military salute, believe it was 80 shots fired. BBC do the best coverage.

In a speech when she was 21, the then Princess Elizabeth promised to faithfully serve the nation and what was then the Empire, now the Commonwealth. How many people do you know that have not waivered from a promise for 75 years? Regardless of being royalty, she is just a phenomenal person. That is why the reception here is so outstanding. There are now three generations who have known no other monarch. Queen Elizabeth is currently third on the list of longest all time reigns behind King Louis XIV of France (72 years) in the 17th/18th centuries and King Bhumibol of Thailand (70 years) 1946-2016. Queen Elizabeth will pass King Bhumibol in 10 days. I am a proud Brit and my parents were married in Queen Elizabeth's coronation year of 1953. It is a family joke that the four great events of 1953 were Queen Elizabeth's coronation, Sir Edmund Hilary and Tenzing Norgay climbing Mt Everest, Sir Stanley Matthews (the oldest player to play in England's premier division at age 50 in 1965, and having a professional career of 33 years) winning the FA Cup Final (after losses in 1948 and 1951) and my parent's wedding.

As a war baby, my earliest memories of her are in uniform, or working as a mechanic on army lorries in fatigues. Considering she was not born to be Queen, her service has been incredible. There were almost no television sets in those days because they were so expensive. Sixteen months later, when the Coronation took place it was very different. Television sets were cheaper so millions bought them to watch the ceremonies. Anyone with a set invited in neighbours. Many brought food with them so the day became a celebration. There were also street parties. These were mainly for the children. Tables and chairs were brought out of the homes and the children had a wonderful time eating, drinking squash (concentrated fruit drinks diluted to personal taste) and playing games. Despite civil war, invasion, famine, two plagues, the blitz, the Great Fire, it's the one single consistent thing. It's a totem; it's a continuous an ongoing message and an anchor. I’m glad you enjoyed watching the Royals, her family and the people of the UK enjoying the celebrations. Whenever there is a milestone in the Queens (and other immediate royals) lives, there is always pageants, parades etc. The Fly Over is breathtaking and always finishes with the Red Arrows. If my memory serves me correctly, presently (at the date of writing this message) Queen Elizabeth is the longest serving female monarch in history, and the third longest serving monarch in history, in the world! There are two male monarchs who have served longer than QEII, one just a few days more (so she could end up being the second), and the remaining one is a year and days more. The Queen is 96, and is still working, and I would imagine that in itself must be a record, as I do not know anyone who still works at 85, let alone 96. The state retirement age in the UK has recently risen to 67 yrs of age. Her husband, Prince Phillip was 99 when he passed away (this year) and her Mother, Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, (Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon) was 102 back on the early 2,000’s I think. Therefore, the odds for a long life expectancy for the Queen’s children bodes well. If you do get a chance to visit London, I would recommend a trip to the Palace, which is usually open between July and October. Also, there is Madame Tussaud’s which houses the wax works of various famous people, and has some of the costumes too on display (of those people) and gives a timeline of the Royal lineage. Plus there are museum’s, which used to be free to the general public and I assume still are, the Imperial War Museum may be of great interest to you. Good luck on your training and definitely take a look at the other events on KZbin surrounding the Queens milestones over the year, we tend not to do things by half 😀. All the best.

Saw Concorde flying over my house on the last flight. Everyone came outside - and for some reason we were all waving although nobody else could see us. The sound was just amazing but not nearly as good as the sound of the engines from the Royal Memorial flight - the Lancaster has passed over once but the spitfires have flown by a couple of times, quite low but that wing shape is unique. It’s just like the old WW2 films. Just great.

Over one million people in front of the palace gates and trailing down the Mall, overflowing into St James Park. I think Louis will be a pilot like his father one day. I'm 35, so half the age of her reign. I was born in 1986, so watching old films and TV programmes from the 60s and 70s reference the Queen, being Elizabeth II. There are old post boxes around that have been repainted many times and bear her insignia. This country still had post-war rationing when she came to the throne in the 1950s. It becomes mind-blowing the more you think about it. Churchill was PM. Look at the old cars that were around then. Her coronation wasn't even a decade after the end of WW2. It really will be sureal when her reign ends. Not everyone's a fan of Prince Charles, but at least he's also a familiar face.

I live about a mile from an historic railway line, and they often have a WW2 aircraft fly past on special events. Over these last three days, a Hurricane and a Lancaster (twice!!) has flown right over my house at about 400ft, and then to do some manouevres over the station. Tomorrow? Tomorrow I will see Spitfires, another Hurricane and a Mustang! They regularly get Spitfires, and they pretend to strafe the platform. I also saw a Dakota last year. There is honestly nothing like it when those Merlin engines rattle the air in your lungs and the windows in your house. On my birthday a few years ago, my (now) ex had been particularly horrible to me, so I went out into the garden. I looked up, and right then the Red arrows, in perfect formation flew right over my head (low enough to see the wing markings). Logic tells me they were going over the railway, but really I know they were there for me.

I echo your thoughts. I remember the blackouts and the sirens; one of warning of danger and the “all clear” when the danger was passed and my mum telling me that if I saw a plane flying over and something dropped out of it to run in and get under the iron table we had in our living room throughout the war. However, it was always covered with a nice clean tablecloth every day as we also had our meals on it. The Lancaster Bomber and the Spitfires and Hurricanes really brought it all back, as well as memories of all the very young men who went up night after night to stop the Luftwaffe. So my dear, take care of yourself you seem to be a delightful young man.

@@twoofsix3b3g first, it's not my Louis XIV, cause I ain't French. Second, it's not a competition (that doesn't make much sense as a whole AND even less between a king living in the 17th/18th century and a queen living in the 20th/21st...) There was just a question asked "is she the longest reigning monarch we know of?" Answer is "not yet but not far"

@@twoofsix3b3g A monarch's reign starts from their date of accession to the throne, so yes, Louis XIV is the longest reigning monarch (so far). Henry VI was the youngest English king when his reign commenced at the age of 8 months. The fact that a regent is appointed, when a child becomes king or queen, is irrelevant to the length of their reign.

I love watching airplanes too, since young. The different models of airplanes, the sounds of their engines, and the speed capacity of all the planes, ergo the function of each type of planes all make a fascinating study of them. The sound rumbles that comes out of each of them must make an unforgettable experience of what it's like during The Battle of Britain and World War II.

True enough, except King Louis was only 4 years old when he (succeeded) "inherited" the title of King . . . I have a feeling he didn't do a great deal for perhaps maybe 10 years after that, or more . . . and then you also have the role of service and the engagements she has carried out over those same 70 years to consider, too . . . I can only wonder if any other royal ruler in history has even done as many engagements after taking such a role up after it as she has . . . ??? - As I'm sure that most of them just enjoyed the lifestyle being offered without offering the same duty of service in return . . .
