you might try the book; Australians in 9 wars. Which 9 wars you may ask. I was surprised where we had fought. ....and lets not forget that Monash was given the job of creating the S.E.C.V. which was the equivalent of the C.E.G.B in Brittain. that provided continuous, cheap power to Victoria for a long time.

I visited Le Hamel nearly two years ago. On 4th July my father’s father lost his arm there, which changed the course of his life. The war cemeteries moved me to tears; so many of the dead were younger than our own children. I rejoice in being the first in three generations of my family to not go to war and hope that our children never have to.

The scary thing is that now it is China that has the massive production capability (most specificaly in ship building) that the US gave up by moving its productioin sites to China and other countries and over-focusing on the War Against Terror.

Monash was Jewish. Antisemitism in Australia was just as intense as it was in Western Europe at the time. A brilliant tactician , Monash had to fight this too.

When you ask about what would have happened had the war ended with a peace treaty earlier, the perfect time for Germany to make peace was after Russia negotiated peace with Germany, or about one year before the war actually ended. Germany had extracted vast territory which included most of the farmland and oil fields Hitler would try and take from Russia twenty years later. Peace could have been agreed to as the whole point of the war was to punish Russia for it's involvement in Serbia, France was attacked because it was Russias ally at this point, so accepting pre war borders and some reparations would have been a very tempting offer. Germany would have had it's food and oil issues resolved and probably a stable enough government to resist Hitler.

An interesting piece of history: at the 3:57 mark you can hear the clock tower chiming 11:00 o'clock, which is the traditional time for the Sovereign to arrive on the parade. When the Late Queen Elizabeth II found out that the clock attendants were holding the clock chimes until her arrival, she ruled that they were not to do so in the future and that she would, instead, always arrive on time! Her Late Majesty was always on-time thereafter. God Save The King!

The comment on the video from "The Great War' site; that the Australian Prime Minister, Billy Hughes, changed his mind about appointing Monash as Australian Corps Commander after the 'Battle of Hamel' is completely inaccurate: Monash was appointed to that position on 1st June 1918. A whole month prior to the battle!
@Seagullias1225 күн бұрын
Monash lived in Melbourne; hardly the "Australian Outback"! He'd lived for a short time in the New South Wales country town of Jerilderie but went to Scoth College, a prestigious private school, and Melbourne University in Melbourne.

If you like military bands, there is one piece you 'REALLY SHOULD' take a look at. It's the Massed Bands of His Majesty's Royal Marines, performing the theme tune ftom the film Gladiator! It was filmed on the same 'Horse Guards Parade' as Trooping the Colour in central London earlier this year. There is one stunning solo (vocal) performance accompanied by the Massed Bands. I'am of course 'biased' having served in HMRM's for 24 years. From Jan 1966 - July 1990. I promise you won't be disappointed.......🫡 🇬🇧 ⚓️ !!!

i was told that the bright solid red uniforms were a form of camouflage, as the enemy finds it harder to count the lines of troops and get estimates on numbers during musket era of fighting, or it could it just looks coolAF who knows?

Biggest difference in marching styles is that the Brits gait is a step, the US gait is a glide. The slow march for the Brits are two half mid paused steps, for the US it is an even slower glide.

It's not widely known- but when his mum got married to Prince Phillip the side of the church where the grooms' family was most mostly empty. That is because all four of his sisters were Nazis and married to members of the SS. The royal family thought this would be the done thing to advertise. Most of Charlies aunts and uncles were Nazis. Nobody in my family ever joined the Nazi party or the SS. Comment below if your family have.

There is a manoeuvre called The Wheel where the marching band turns in a quarter circle. Apparently the method is passed down from one commander to the next and it is not written down anywhere how to do it!
