Apart from what’s portrayed in American movies, countries in Eastern Europe, especially in recent years, are very beautiful and extremely safe to visit. The people are warm and welcoming, and English is often taught at school as a second language starting from kindergarten. This means younger generations are likely to speak or understand English, making it easier for foreigners to communicate and enjoy a hassle-free stay.

Lol these quizzes are hilariously wrong. Grouping Hungary, Czechia and Poland in Eastern Europe…. Well OK I guess, that is your typical Cold War sensibility. The European part of Russia + Belarus and Ukraine cover as large an area as all the way from Portugal to the German border. If you want to use a simple East-West geographical separator, Eastern Europe starts in the middle of Germany Rest of the questions: To show how Eastern European we are: we don’t even have borscht. I never had it, I have no idea what that is other than a soup. Based on the name I would have said “black pepper” because bors in Hungarian means black pepper. 😂 We do have bagpipes however. But then again literally everyone has bagpipes from Portugal to Korea. You could literally walk from Lisbon to Seoul to check how regional varieties change. Illy Ferenc was Hungarian. (Family name comes first in Hungarian) Thrace is literally on the Balkans, ymmw if you count the Balkans as Eastern Europe or its own thing. Prague is more to the West than Vienna. Never heard of the national library of Belarus.

Czech here, I play bagpipes and it's truly not very known, but a good portion of countries (even west) has their name for the instrument and also unique-ish appearance (mostly heads and the bag itself, or they differ in sound), some of the countries even have more than one variation. In Czechia, there are ,,České dudy" and ,,Moravské gajdy" for example, where dudy are usually made of goat fur, are wooden and the head should be detailed goat head with horns and stuff while gajdy are more barebones, without much aesthetic.

I feel like should finally get away from defining it just by the historic influence spheres of the cold war era (= everything former Warsaw Pact is Eastern Europe). To me as German, I feel like Poland and Czechia for example are Central Europe, just like us. Otherwise Germany, Austria and Switzerland would be the only "Central European" Nations. Does not make much sense to me. I'd add Slovakia and Hungary as well. And geographically as well as historic (Early 20th century and before), it also makes a lot more sense that way imho.

10 In the bagpipe ( hungarian duda) theme, search for the Bordó Sárkány band song's Legenda 17 A story about the Komondor dog. This is a large white-haired dog. When it lies down, it looks like a rug made of rags. It is peaceful, very alert, but if it senses an attack, it strongly protects its territory. While walking down the street with my friend, we discovered that there was a white rug in front of the front door of a house in a fenced yard. He remarked that he would never put a white rug in front of the door. I told him that it was a dog. He didn't believe it, so I asked him to shake the gate on the fence. The Komondor was there in an instant and barked loudly. He jumped backwards with a familiar white face...I won’t write down what he said.

Your story about buying most of your groceries from shops owned by people of Eastern European decent made me think of the movie 'An American Pickle' 😄 As a west-european, born and raised, I didn't do a whole lot better than you... only a few better because of having better geography lessons, I guess. Steffi Graff wiped away my feet. My dad, whose mother was born in what used to be DDR (East Germany) was one of the few west-european people who could easily roam behind the iron curtain, has told me stories about how he and my Dutch uncle (trucker) had a few trips into what used to be the Warsaw Pact (guess my uncle liked to have a co-pilot who was able to speak German fluently with an eastern dialect). When they were transporting western luxury goods, a couple of boxes were "lost" every time they crossed a border control... but that was already in the budget of the western companies... so the actual customers always got what they ordered 😄 I was only 8 when the iron curtain fell, so I didn't get to visit eastern Europe while it was still under soviet control, but I do remember going to Czechia and Poland before they became members of the EU, and I do remember the time when speaking German was more accepted than trying to get the border guards to speak English... since then, English has been accepted as the lingua franca in Europe, but it was an interesting time in the late 80's and early 90's... the French refused to speak anything but French... the Dutch and the Danes could figure out to communicate by using common English or German loan words. And Germany was still dubbing American movies, rather than subtitles. And this mess explains why I can basically watch German TV without noticing that it's not in Danish or English... and I only need subtitles now and then. I use German too rarely to be able to put a sentence together... but I understand it perfectly well.

Eastern Europe is a charged term, many mistakenly use it, especially for west and south slavic countries(first are in central europe, second are in south-eastern. Of south slavs, only croatia vehemently insists it's part of central europe instead and shows itself in geography classes and maps as such). Interestingly enough, in balkans, we use "gaida" (or "gajde") to call the scottish style of bagpipe(which are always "dressed" in cloth), while the one we use is call "diple"(which are not "dressed", hence distinct color). Interesting quiz, correctly guessed a few things even without ever hearing of some(the movie in question 1 and the illy coffee brand).

So in this quiz you have only 3 country from Eastern Europe, all others are not part of Eastern Europe ;)

Hey, not bad at all considering that this was a quiz about a European region that is not on your radar.

I heard you mispronounce Danube a couple of times recently. It's is pronounced more like Dan-yoube with the "you" sound. It's already the english name for it.

Actually - geographically - Eastern Europe is just solely Russia, Belarus und Middle + Eastern Ukraine..... and that´s it = therefore an "Eastern Europe Quiz" in order to be accurate + legit can only solely ask questions about those 3 countries, not more and not less while Western Ukraine is - geographically - in Central Europe. Also the North West of Romania, and the North of Serbia is in geographical Central Europe while the rest of those 2 countries is - geographically in - "South-East Europe" - as like as Greece, Bulgaria, Moldavia and the Balkan States Albania, Bosnia, Monte Negro, North Macedonia The - political - classification to refer to countries as like Hungary, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia and the Baltic States Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania as "Eastern Europe" is since the fall of the Iron Curtain in 1989 totally obsolet for now 36 years = almost 4 decades = and therefore is that - political classification from the past - in 2025 totally wrong. Even more so due to the fact that those mentioned countries are all members of the EU which is as a whole - politically - part of "the political Western World"

The flag one is interesting, because in 1871 when the German states got united under 1 Flag by Bismarck the choice for the new flag became Prussia (Black + White) and the most common color among all the other states in the union (called "German Empire") which was also red. So the flag became from top to bottom: Black White Red, as it turns out, red is a very popular color for flags

The whole quiz is wrong, because it recognizes certain countries as Eastern European when they are not
@bananenmusli276922 сағат бұрын
They didn't say what their definition of Eastern Europe is. For example the last question with the flag was weird because Estonia doesn't have red and could be considered Eastern Europe.
