Today I have decided to put my very limited knowledge of all things Canadian to the test, literally. I recently found this 30 question online quiz that I thought would be very fun. interesting, and most importantly embarrassing for me to react to. I am not exactly sure what this quiz on Canada will cover, but I am really hoping that my recent dive in Canadian KZbin will help me. If you enjoyed the video feel free to leave a comment, like, or subscribe for more!

Terry Fox is the greatest athlete to ever live. After losing his leg to cancer, he set off to raise awareness for cancer by running across Canada. He ran an average of 26 miles per day for 143 days, covering 5300km, on one leg, in harsh weather. In Thunder Bay he discovered the cancer had returned in his lungs forcing him to stop his run. He passed away soon after, just days before his 23 birthday. The Terry Fox run is now the worlds largest one day cancer fundraiser and has raised over 850 million dollars in his name.

French is mandatory in BC and Ontario schools, as well as in Ontario Quebec and the 4 Maritime Provinces. PEI has 2nd language requirement which generally means French due to teacher availability. Naturally, Albertans not interested, nor is their neighbour Saskatchewan. French though is provided as an elective in those provinces. My kids in BC had mandatory French from grade 4 through to Grade 11. Yes yes it may have changed since 1970s to 1990s when my kids attended. In 1960s it was mandatory grade 8 to grade 11 but in grade 12 you could choose German (I was in a small country high school) if you wanted. Times change. I’m happy 2 of my grandkids are completely bilingual in English French and attend a French Immersion school thanks to their parents paving way for Federal Government occupations as an option. I mean why not. I live in a French community where French lumberjacks first settled in BC - called Maillardville and has quite a few French inspired buildings and apartments. I quite like it and besides who wouldn’t want to travel with ease in Paris or Nomandy or the French Riviera. It’s a wonderful country!

@BRoyce69 Жыл бұрын
Someone said spot the Ontarian Bagged bill is also a regional thing. Just like being bilingual. It's useful in Ontario, Quebec and New Brunswick; so it's taught there, the prairies dont give enough shits to make it mandatory. Youd find it as an elective like taking Spanish or German class there.

Pierre Trudeau also alleviated the housing crisis of the 1970s by creating MURB that saw the building of over 197,000 low income affordable housing units across Canada. I'd love to see a video on Terry Fox! I remember his run, and its tragic end from when I was very young, and he is truly a Canadian hero. I could never take part in my school's Terry Fox runs because of my own disabilities, but I would always do what I could and make posters and art for them, and collect donations on behalf of my sister, who ran it every year. Rick Hansen is worth looking into as well - he was a mentor to Terry Fox, as a disabled athlete who eventually crossed every continent in the world in his wheelchair, to raise money for research into spinal cord injuries (Rick Hansen was paralysed from the waist down in a car accident), and to prove that people with disabilities are capable of amazing things.

@@jjbigfoot9077 we only throw shade at those Americans who deserve it. Like the ones who support political drumpf. We already went through a populist leader who tried to label media as fake news, tried to create a white "Christian" nationalist nation, tried to stifle and muzzle scientists who disagreed with him, and even made statements like "when I'm done with Canada, you won't recognize it". You know. Stephen Harper. The head of the IDU. The group of globalist elites that give marching orders to the likes of Orban, Modi, Bolsonaro, Morrison, Ergodan, Johnson, and even drumpf. French and English have equal status according to the Canadian Constitution. Just to clarify, Quebec city's official name in both Canadian French and Canadian English is Québec with the accent. Even though we are in 2022, lots of softwares don't work well with accents (my name on my diploma was nearly Jo@?lle) and so people sometimes just write Quebec without the accent. In Québec (the province), people will refer to the city just as Québec and we know from context and the preposition preceeding Québec if we are talking about the city or the province. It's great that Tyler wants to learn about Canada. 22:10 Victoria is the capital of British Columbia and is located in Canada's only Mediterranean climate (the warm summer variety,) it sees a February average of 8.6C (that's roughly 46-48F when all rounding is accounted for) and there is even a commercial olive farm on nearby Salt Spring Island. On average, the BC coast enjoys some of the mildest winters in the country since the temperatures are moderated by the Pacific Ocean and the mountains block a lot of Arctic air (interior regions can be a lot colder and snowier but get progressively milder further south.) While the coast generally sees lower snowfall, it gets a lot of winter rain (it's not called a *rainforest* for nothing.) The west coast is also the *only* part of Canada that can grow cold-hardy palms *without* winter protection as the plant hardiness zones range between *8a & 9b* (the highest in Canada) by the water. To give you an idea about the moderating effect of the ocean (and just how *vast* Canada is) I’m going to compare Prince Rupert, BC (which is just south of *Alaska)* to four other Canadian cities. Prince Rupert averages 6C (43F) in February compared to -8C (18F) in St. Anthony, NL (a coastal town which sits at roughly the same latitude) 1C (34F) in Kingsville, ON (the southernmost incorporated town in Canada) and 0C (32F) in both Halifax & Toronto (which are generally ranked as two of the mildest major cities in winter outside of BC.)

Just so you know, Pierre Trudeau was, as you suggested, Justin's dad. He was also Prime Minister from 1968-1984 except for a six-month stint in 1979 where the opposition PC (Progressive Conservative) party was temporarily in power under Joe Clarke. Gretsky was never a Canadian politician although if he ran, especially in his hometown, he almost certainly would have won. Hockey is our national religion up here. And English and French are both Official Languages. Although that applies nationally, it's specific to services provided by the federal government. It basically means you can get service from the federal government agencies in English or French. Many provinces have also chosen to offer their services in English and French, such as Ontario and New Brunswick. Interestingly enough, when we updated our Canadian constitution in 1982, along with the federal government, New Brunswick also added English and French as official languages, so they're considered Charter rights now.

Love these podcasts! It’s refreshing to watch some light hearted fun…….something I think we all need these days. Also, great to see you taking such an interest in the top hat over America (I didn’t make that one up).

Yes English and French are both our official languages, and we are officially a bilingual country. Now in practice, French is very rarely spoken outside of Québec, and English is much less spoken inside Québec, but outside of Québec, all public services must be offered in both languages, and all our product packaging is written in both languages. From food to dvds to clothes. Tag on your t-shirt? Everything written on it is written in English, and then either on the bottom or on the reverse side, the same thing written in French. Get a burger and fountain drink from McDonalds? The packaging on the burger and the slogan on the cup are written in both English and French. If you ever come here, you’ll have to take notice of it. French is everywhere in Anglophone Canada, but due to the French Language and Culture Protectionism in Québec, I believe that federal services must also be offered in English, but they do not have to label many things in English that we in Anglophone Canada have to do in French. Because French is a minority in Canada, and the Québécois have taken strong stances to ensure the protection of their language, culture, and traditions. Québec is very nationalist in that sense. Many Québécois don’t even consider themselves Canadians, or Québec to be a province in Canada, but more so that they are their own nation within a nation. Maybe because Anglophone Canadians have historically _mostly_ (prior to New France being conquered by the British due to the results of one of many European conflicts) not been in a position of being a minority, we do not have such strong sentiments about our language. Culture perhaps, but English has cemented itself as the global language, and so if anything we are so comfortable in our global linguistic hegemony that we yearn to learn other languages without any worry about the loss of our own. It’s a long, complicated, and sometimes touchy subject, and perhaps it might be a good topic to learn about and make a video on.

I agree, it can be a very controversial subject with a lot of conflicting but valid opinions/perspectives, and there is so much historical context to dive into - its really complex. One interesting thing though is that provincially, Quebec’s only officially recognized language is French, and everyone else’s is English, with New Brunswick being the only exception to officially recognize both English and French equally. Driving from Ontario through Quebec to New Brunswick will see you passing street signs only in English, to street signs only in French, to street signs with both English and French together.

Don't take what I say for cash as it's from my own experience. I'm from the province of Quebec, born and raise, and officially we have French and English in that order. Labelling and public services must also be offered in both languages and most of the time it will be the case, it will be poor english but you will be able to communicate. The thing is because of L'office Québéquois de la langue Française (they officially don't have an english translation but it's roughly "Quebec office of the French language") employers are forced to use french as primary language for everything. You need to give reasons for not having a ressource in french and sometimes you receive fines for it. For example, at my job we needed a computer with Windows installed in english, it required poof that the french version would not work in that specific case. Because of that it is very hard to find all you need in english outside of Canadian gouvernements resources. Add to the fact that if you are not from an english parent or first nation you can't go to english schools, the only english you learn at school is approx an 1h a week for most kids.

Actually the rules of labeling are the same. In Quebec certain things have to be bilingual, but they are the same in english provinces. But some things won’t be translated. For exemple, if a shop put a sign outside to promote something or say they are closed, it will be only in french (it as to be at least in french according to the law), but it’s the same in english provinces, in ontario a shop won’t translate a sign outside saying they are closed 😉

Victoria is the capital of BC, and is basically as south west as you can go. It's on an island and the warm surrounding waters are what gives it the warm winters, the temps rarely drop below 0. It's warm enough to grow palm trees there.

You've learned a lot. BTW, the beaver is the national animal of Canada because of beaver pelts traded and sold by the Hudson's Bay Company.
