I think the main reason we have cleaner/newer looking cars is because there are stricter rules about the safety of our vehicles. If it doesn’t pass the yearly MOT then it’s illegal to drive it until the issues are fixed.

I always thought Lydon was drawing parallels between the devotion to the Queen as being akin to the personality cults that exist in fascist societies rather than outright calling the Queen fascist; it being more a statement on British society being flawed in its devotion to one woman whilst so many working class kids had no future at all. Whilst Lydon's lyrics were blunt and provocative they were seldom meant to be literal. Lydon is not condemning Pauline for having an abortion with the lyric 'She was a no-one who killed her baby' in Bodies , he is vocalizing the prejudice and judgement Pauline experienced and internalized, in order to refute this. Lydon has also refuted the literal reading of 'Anarchy for the UK' as being more of a statement about wanting to be a disruptor and change the way society views things, rather than literally wanting to live in Anarchy and being the Anti-Christ. "Anarchy is a terrible idea". "I never was (an Anarchist)" Back to GStQ. Its possible that Lydon literally meant that the Jim Callaghan Labour Government of 1977 were actual fascists; but for me I think it was simply a statement about how insane it was to revere someone who in Lydon's words was 'Just a piece of cardboard they drag around on trolleys' and spend so much time and money on celebrating effectively an arbitrary length of time achieved in a meaningless position rather that deal with the fact that the entire country was f**ked and many had no future.

The thing I've realised through watching many videos of Americans eating with cutlery, and the resulting comments section, is that 'proper table manners' is possibly the one subject that will unite brits across the class divide. We are trained to never show up our Mums in public & we will judge you for it, despite our best efforts 😂 It's also a plot point in an old SOE war movie, the American spy gives himself away in a French cafe with his 'incorrect' use of cutlery.

I grew up in the UK and there were always dogs in pubs in the 70s/80s because the old men would tell their wives that they were taking the dog for a walk but they'd only take them as far as the pub then stay there for a few hours. The dog would get some crisps (chips) and an ashtray full of beer.

Jaywalking is not even a term in Britain, people cross the roads, etc, usually when it's safe to do so, and drivers need to keep an eye out for pedestrians, cyclists, and farm animals if you're driving in the country.

I can walk into a redtsurant and EVEN before hearing them spesk, can (usually) spot Americans straight away. They cannot use cutlery properly... Its like watching children eat. They hardly use a knife and pointlessly switch the fork from hand to hand. In the UK, Europe and Australasia we get taught how to sit at mealtimes, using the knife and fork correctly. I have travelled to many parts of the US over 40 + years and am constantly fascinated watching (most) Americans using 'silverwear'. Also, bathrooms or shower rooms have the switches outside or the pull cords are inside to avoid wet hands contacting electricity (because our power, 220-240V, is double that used in the US), so an kill ! 🤔😎

As most people are saying in the comments, they got a lot wrong in this video....in fact, most of it. I suspect they were comment baiting (by saying ALL Brits do or have things) or didn't realise people were joking when they told them stuff they accepted as fact. As you correctly assumed, these are yuppies who probably hung out with other yuppies. If they were with bell ringers they are almost certainly heavily religious (hence their anti-abortion dig) and they got a very narrow experience. Brits would much rather hang out with you guys than those tools, and you will find American culture isn't alien to Brits as most of the best TV, film and music is considered American. You might be mildly surprised by some things but you will find that you will be just fine with hardly any adjustments. These videos try to make you think other cultures are aliens. These are just entitled yuppies who saw very little of the true England and saw one case of something and assumed it was like that everywhere. Just remember, AC isn't standard in UK, if it's hot you will probably just have to open a window.

Lights in bathrooms is safety. Remember we have double the voltage, and water and leccy don't mix. The chords are non conductive so it can't travel to you if there's a fault. They're an older thing, usually your switch is just outside the room.

Electrics are way safer here, pull switch in restrooms / bathrooms (as originals were all metal and wet hands and electricity don't mix). Now a lot have the switch outside the door. The plugs have an Earth and an override switch in most cases!

As for smoking - in UK, smoking is banned inside any premises, including pubs, hence the only place smoking is allowed is in the open air. The main thing is, don’t worry at all about these minor differences. None of them will make any difference to your stay here. Just enjoy the experience.

Lots of shops are open late. Except maybe in small villages. But even the small village I live in, has two shops open until 10 pm. Town centres will usually have a 24 hour supermarket / grocery store. There's plenty of 24hr garages (gas stations) too, where you can get essentials from.

In regards to dogs in pubs and cafes. Not everyone knows everyone's dogs. My village pub has a river running right by it. In the Spring and Summer people on long boat holidays park their boat up and come into the pub for a drink and a nice meal. They all bring their dogs in. So we get a lot of strangers with dogs coming in. It's all good though, everyone gets along. The pub itself has 3 dogs wandering around. And we don't have paper money anymore, it's polymer money now. You can't tear it. We have pill cord switches in bathrooms as light switches and wet hands don't mix. So a pull cord is safe.

Many churches no longer ring bells. Partially because you need a team of skilled bell ringers to do it, partially because maintaining the bells is expensive. So, they either play a recording or more likely don't have any bells. You need a club for the churches with multiple bells for the bell ringers to learn and practice the different "peals" of bells to keep up the tradition and bang out the tunes.

Im not sure where they got the idea that we give our heights in centimetres, the vast majority of the time heights are given in feet and inches. As for traffic lights, yellow on its own means it's about to turn red. Just before green, red and yellow appear together, so there's no risk of confusing the two. In our meals we have the starter then the main course. Entrée is just a fancy French word for starter. Im not sure how the US ended up with it backwards.

I always specify 'no ice, thanks' whenever ordering a soft drink in a pub and before your glass gets automatically plunged into the ice bucket as a Coke, lemonade or any other soft drink will normally come with a whole glass of ice and a pipette of drink as standard. And most soft drinks will normally be refrigerated and cold enough anyway without needing ice taking up space.

Voltage is why we have pull cords inside bathrooms or a switch outside the bathroom. Our 220 voltage is lethal. So by law, you can not have any standard electrical outlets or switches in a bathroom. Water and 220V don't cohabitate very well. If your ceiling mounted pull cord is in contact with water from your bathroom? Then drowning is probably your primary concern, not the lighting.

Isn't there a six Pence? There used to be but that and many other coins (shilling, threepenny etc) disappeared when we ditched empirical for metric in the 70's. There was a time when there were 240p in a pound rather than 100. We tend to mix our use of empirical and metric. So we still commonly use ft and inches to describe our height but forms require centemeters. It's even common to use Celsius to describe cold weather and Fahrenheit to describe hot weather. So -1C in winter and 96F in summer.

The string light in the bathroom is for safety purposes. It is wired into ceiling so it is unlikely any water would reach it and that safety reason is also why we don't have sockets for electrical appliances in the bathroom

In regards to freedom of speech. I found the US has less freedom of speech. I worked at a car dealership when I lived in the US. A guy I worked with got fired for calling a Japanese car a "Jap car". It was deemed offensive in the US. You've seen British TV and the things they say. Jimmy Carr is always joking about how the royal family whacked princess Diana and other wild stuff like that. People go to royal events and shout all sorts.

Ignore what they said about pedestrians. I am guessing that they mean at intersections. Because you have jay walking laws, you also have "crossings" at most intersections. We don't have Jay walking so most intersections are not controlled crossings but most people will cross at intersections. We do have pedestrian crossings, some are traffic light controlled, others are "zebra crossings". You need to familiarise yourself with how these all work and the best way to do that is to quickly read the highway code. It's online and will teach you about crossings, road signs etc etc. Driving here is 90% like driving in the states. You just need to grasp that 10%. Much of which you will pick up just by going with the flow. But do not, when you are driving, ignore pedestrians nor as a pedestrian expect cars to ignore you. Oh and do not turn right (or in our case left), on a red signal. We don't do that. Red is red no matter which direction you are going at the intersection.

FYI: Although we DON'T have any jaywalking law in BRITAIN, we DO have it in the UK. In Northern Ireland (and the Republic of Ireland too), jaywalking is a 'thing' and you can get an 'on-the-spot' fine in the main city's. Many Brits don't even know the law exists and are generally given a verbal warning by the Garda on the first occasion.

Sealed switches solve this problem but the pull cord is cheaper and just as effective. It's also easier to find in the dark, no need to drag your hand over a wall trying to find a switch.

In the UK, any vehicle over 3 years old then MUST have an annual MOT (Ministry of Transport) check. It ensures that the vehicle meets road safety and environmental standards. If it fails the testing, you have to correct the issues otherwise the vehicle cannot be driven on the road.

There are no ‘clubs’; you join a ‘Tower’. My wife rings for the local church, the bells weave in and out of each other following patterns similar to those used in lace making. North America have Change Ringing also.

The reason there are no old cars is that we’re a very very damp country and cars just rust to bits. Cars over 20 years old are not that common

A yard here in the UK is concrete or soil. A garden usually has a lawn with maybe some flowers in flowerbeds - sometimes raised for easier access by people in wheelchairs or arthritis - set unto or near the lawn, with footpaths around the flowerbeds. We may also have a shed for storing gardening equipment, or a greenhouse for growing young plants or veg. Some ftont gardens have been concreted over to park cars there, but back gardens may have decking, or a patio incorporated near the back of the house. Yards are most often associated with businesses or railways, or stabling. Some older houses may just have a small paved yard at the back and flowers in pots, garden urns, or window boxes if space is limited, and are usually walled around the perimeter. Front gardens may have low decorative walls or wooden fences, with or without gates at the access* point leading to the front door of the house, and / or leading to a side or back door to the house. (level with the pavement by the roadside*).

Smoking is banned in pubs. It looks like we smoke more in the UK because you can only do it in the street. It's still a minority thing.
