Do you want a new old guitar? GOOD NEWS! Fender has a whole line of new old guitars they are calling the "American Vintage II" line. Of course I went for the 66' Jazzmaster but maybe you think I should have covered a different guitar from the line, tell me what you think in the comments section. And try to talk me out of messing up this pristine new old guitar with sketchy relic techniques. By the way I changed the strings on this guitar before filming, I just prefer heavier strings on my jazzmasters and I wanted to show off they way I would have it set up.
The replacement arm I bought on amazon: amzn.to/3MpE1PM

You’re the surf master. There’s no better guitar than the JM to see you demo. And if you just play it - that will ‘relic’ it without any extra effort. 👍

yes, you chose the right guitar and color. Put it directly at sunlight for a couple of months. I did that with my dakota red "new" old fender mustang and it turned into a beautiful vintage faded red guava color. Then you can relic it. I think it would look a little off with that brand new looking red finish. whatever you decide we'll be watching!!

If you do plan on relicing it, since it is nitro you can age the finish with powerful uv light, or get checking by heating it then quickly putting it in somewhere very cold. Like put it out in the hot sun for the afternoon then immediately put it in a chest freezer. It does have a risk of warpage if it's too extreme though so that's something to note

I have reliced a nitro guitar before, it is an art to make it not look really fake and terrible. If you do I would stick to dings, checking, and aging the plastic and metal parts. Making the wood look aged is very difficult.

That’s the right guitar. Something you may relate to: Hank Marvin thinks relic guitars are not a good thing. But it is your choice to ruin a beautiful new guitar that a Fender crew tried their best to make perfect. 😔

I love it and I am definitely interested in it. I only wish it came with the 9.5" radius fretboard. I'd love a binding and blocks Jazzmaster with that radius... Maybe some more colours would be nice as well. I like the red and blue, but some new interesting choices would be cool. I know it is a 66 re-issue, but... Please don't relic it. Just play it. It would be more interesting to see how it ages naturally with someone putting in some long hours playing it.

I love this iteration of the Jazzmaster. A local music store has an Original 60s Jazzmaster and a Lake Placid Blue Vintage II Jazzmaster in stock, so I was able to compare them, and the 7.25" radius fretboard on the Vinyage II was a better fit for my hand than the 9" one on the Original 60s. I always try guitars unplugged first so I can focus on how they feel, then I plug them in. I ran out of time, so that's going to be what I compare next, when I go back. So far, I love this guitar, and it was a good one to pick for this demonstration and review.

I'm NSM a fan of JM's , preferring Jaguar's for electronics, pick ups, and shorter scale.There's actually a lot of competition in the off set market these days, - the D'Angelico Bedford, for example- is prob the better all around ride.And I do like Fender, and own several self builds. No doubt, the American models are much better as far as capturing what makes the JM a great design; but they aren't exactly affordable for most unless it's your only guitar. The nitro should be reliced; get that wear off to a good start.

Dont really know enough about you or what your trying to use it for or where your influence and style are coming from. Sounded great, did that surf sound perfectly a lot of vintage and non vintage indie rockers are gonna love it. Personally the finish is a little too bright and bling for me. What attracted & had curious about the guitar was after I had read that the pole pieces being further apart on these pick ups offer a fatter, wider sound. Definitely hear a lot of contrast between this and a strat, tele, or Jaguar.

I'm gonna vote with no relic. Hear me out. Because I'm very envious. I have a bunch of nitros from days with money, and the slow wear is nice. I have 2 that I checked. One came out looking like a Custom Shop. But I still regret doing it. The other was just a series of accidents that included bubbling the paint and spilling wood stain over it by accident. It's was a matching headstock Sherwood Green AO60s Jazzmaster being refinished as we speak in Lake Placid Blue. When this line was announced I was like "please don't be LPB, please don't be LPB.." The money put into refin is half the price of retail... I loved checked nitro, but it's a slippery slope to "age" the hardware. And nothing looks worse than a home-made relic that shows unaged bare alder.

After looking at the other non-long guitars in the series, you picked the right one. Everyone is always re-creating Strats and Teles, so anything else is a break from same ol' same ol'. It looks like the other color options are Lake Placid blue and sunburst (with tortie pickguard). I'd be more fond of the blue, but the red would be my second choice; that red would look pretty cool with the tortoise pickguard and white control knobs. As for relic'ing...not my thing, really. It's one thing to buy an old guitar that has "been through the war" so to speak and is dinged up and aged as one would expect. But hey, it's your guitar, you do your thing. If you decide to de-gloss anything, I suggest that if you don't have some already, buy some 3M scuff pads (maroon color) for taking it off. They're the equivalent of about 320grit sandpaper, but washable/reusable. I use 'em for my own projects, especially for scuffing an existing paint job so I can paint over it.

@devilsdoorbell
@devilsdoorbell 2 жыл бұрын
Just before you said it, I was thinking "a $2400 guitar shouldn't have those QC issues." I'd figure a Squier might have them, but not this. My only gripe about the authentic 60s style is the truss rod adjustment placement. I have a 60s MIJ bass and had a local tech route out a channel so the neck doesn't have to come off to adjust the truss rod. I'm in the camp that doesn't like relics beyond a very light to almost medium effort. By the time you're doing the forearm paint rub, I'm out. But I can't deny that some paint checking and a few dings and scuffs would suit it just fine, or some UV fade.

Make an imaginary history for this guitar, and imagine all the hits it took on the road, all the beer that was spilled on it, and go to town! It's just an overpriced lump of wood. There's nothing special or wonderful about it, and it sounds just like every other plank of wood with strings on. Honestly, the bollocks that's talked about guitars really does my nut in. I mean, I love Ryan, and I watch his pedal reviews with interest, because there's always some new twist to the circuit. But this? Honestly, I have guitars that cost me £60 that are just as good, and probably better set up!

Thanks for explaining that rhythm switch. Up until right now I never understood what made these guitars a "Jazz" Master, Man, Leo was a frikkin' genius! In answer to your questions; It comes in 3 Tone Sunburst and Lake Placid Blue, but you picked the right color, Dakota Red is just different enough to standout in your collection, but still got that '66 vibe. The wood is Alder. Yes, relic (or not) to your hearts delight. It's your guitar and if it were mine I would do light checking on the body with the freezer technique and leave the neck and head stock alone. I would also put a cool surf sticker on it. 🏄‍♀ And yes you picked a winner with the Jazzmaster. It suits you. Would I tune in to watch Ryan play C&W on a vintage Tele? Probably not. You are, after all the Drippy King! (sorry, that's the best I could come up with). Lol

New to your channel and I enjoy your reviews. Do you know if there is a lefty version of the jazzmaster American vintage ii? What are your thoughts of getting a righty and flipping the strings? Would that mess up the guitar? Thanks, Nick

All I play are Jaguars and Jazzmasters, looks great, sounds great but WHY OH WHY did they put that disaster of a Bridge with all the grooves back on it.??? They fixed the problem totally with the Professional Series, 1 and 2 at long last, and now they have brought back those horrible Bridges. I'm sure the people at Mastery are loving it. How many more are they going to sell at AUS$300 each?
