Most homes in the US are heated with natural gas, not electricity. The electricity is for the A/C or Central Air, lights, and appliances. The gas is mostly to run the furnace for heating, and maybe if you have an oven that uses gas, for that as well.

I watched a fascinating video that showed how difficult it has become to successfully escape DPRK now. I was saddened to see how sharply those who succeed have declined since Kim Jong-un made himself God of the Hermit Kingdom. Where once there were thousands of successful defections now only the very few make it through, < 10% it is thought, especially since the Corona Virus tightened things up even more. I heard it's been predicted that if the Kim regime was toppled and the two Koreas reunited, It'd cause a huge humanitarian crisis, since the majority of the North Korean population (as in, those North Koreans who haven't been able to gain job skills and knowledge because of how their society works with the "loyalty" caste system) would immediately become a giant burden that would crash the South Korean economy in a short amount of time. Now this is just what I HEARD. I have no idea if it's what would actually happen. I'm also not saying that the Kim regime shouldn't somehow be toppled.

Reminds me of the stories my father told bout his grandparents who were born in 1880s and lived until early 1960s. They lived in a small hut in Finland and lived basically like they still lived in 1800s until the end. Great-Grandma was fascinated by baby clothing like stockings of all things that my older brothers wore (the kind of thick ribbed cotton type). She said her children only wore "a little shirt" (meaning a type of chemise or under-dress) and could not fathom that babies and toddlers could wear clothing like adults did. It wasn't practical in her eyes. She also got married in her black Sunday-dress like most women and the idea of getting a special dress for it seemed decadent to her. Her husband still carried water from a well despite having no legs. My dad once broke a hand bailer that his grandpa used in his fishing boat and my dad felt bad when he realized his grandpa had to cut a tree, dry it and to make a new one from scratch.

It's horrendous to see the affects of a dictatorship, how the dictator uses the people by torturing, enslaving, and using heinous methods to kill them, and show the public how it will done to them and their family if they don't obey everything, this instills 😨 FEAR WHICH WORKS!!!! They are told they must "tell" on their own family members for "mistakes", and if a family member does wrong they can all go to hard labor prison, or die. The house I live in has a wood stove for heat, but it's partially a backup in case the furnace or electricity goes out. I live on a farm in the Upper Midwest, so it's a good idea to have multiple heat sources in case of emergency. And, since we're on the family homestead, which is also a Timber Claim, we can chop our own firewood, so it's a bit cheaper than using propane or electric. Can't imagine trying to use a fireplace in an apartment, though, with the crowded little places I've lived in. That sounds like a *huge* fire hazard.

Our family has a vacation cabin with no electricity and an outhouse; it's not that bad if you have the systems set up for living without electricity: chamber pots, propane stove and refrigerator, gas lighting/oil lamps with mantles, a shed full of firewood, a water pump, etc. If it was more than a vacation home we'd probably install solar, but that's expensive and half the charm of going up there is living without electricity for a bit. But, still, it's nothing like the living conditions in North Korea, we have plenty of fuel, eat better than we do at home, and the latest non-electric conveniences (of which there are many, thanks largely to the Amish and off-grid communities in Alaska).

I like her. She has things to say that are actually interesting and fascinating to hear. One can tell she has actually spent formative years living in North Korea and dealing with everything that comes with it. Most of the young defectors have nothing of interest to say, because they've only experienced childhood years in NK, and have only unreliable childhood memories to tell. All they have to say are general comments about how they had none of the things in NK one finds abroad, and none of the freedom. But they lack specific adulthood experiences about NK, things that people really want to hear.

As grateful as I am for these peaks into NK life, I wish it were translated by someone whose English was better. I sometimes struggle to understand the subtitles. Which is sad because I feel like she's telling us a lot, but much of it gets lost in the bad translation/transcription.

This reminds me of my grandparents. They built their own house in 1969 (in their mid 30s) and that was the first house they had with an integrated bathroom. But they saved money in other ways: There was only oil heating in one room and a fireplace in another, and later when they got old a small electric heater in the kitchen, but for bathing you had to light a stove and first get coal briquettes or wood. There was a shower in the shed, but by instantaneous water heater and because electricity was too expensive for them, the maximum shower was 5 minutes. They died in 2006 and 2007, until then they lived like this. In rural Germany. But 10000000x better than in North Korea tho.

She said there’s no electricity everyday during the daytime and only one light at night. So nobody watches tv? I’m sure no computers or video games. They probably go go a computer lab and pay to use the censored internet. I’d guess they use a lot of candles or maybe oil lamps

Its unbelivable with those toilets. Yes, in my country there were also such toilets outside, but it were made from wood, with proper doors, were build in villages not in cities and it was all before II WW or at least it was 50s-60s in poor areas. During the 60-70s most of our country got electricity, water system and sewage system.

The courageous women in these Dimple videos should see all facets of our country’s treatment of its veterans. There is a disgraceful number of homeless veterans in the United States. My small, picturesque city in the mountains of the US Southwest has one of the better Veteran’s Hospitals in the troubled VA system. The area also has a much more temperate, livable summer climate than the lower desert cities of the Southwest. Because of this, there are quite a number homeless veterans who, in order to be near this hospital, camp out in the national forest that borders the city. In addition to county and state run programs, some of the kinder local churches and other charities have homeless outreach programs that serve these veterans as well as other homeless individuals in the area.

I wish more people could see the evils lurking behind communist and socialist regimes. Videos like this should be played in US schools to teach our children how good we have it in the USA and how they need to protect our Constitutional rights at all costs. Probably the most demonstrative portion of the video is where she's talking about the lighting and electricity. The comment that everyone pays the same amount, no matter how much they use, coupled with the comment about the government leaders being able to use as much as they want, shows how "distribution of wealth" fails... drastically. I really hope in my lifetime to see the fall of Communist China and North Korean governments. Those people deserve to be freed from this form of oppression.

Would be nice if you used a picture that actually represents the average American kitchen. The one in the picture has a massively bigger kitchen area than the majority of homes and apartments. This, at best, represents the newer way they build to put a bigger looking home on a smaller lot. Kitchen, living room, and a small bathroom on the first floor and all the bedrooms and two bathrooms upstairs. Master bedroom and bath usually fairly big and the other bedrooms usually small. If someone broke a leg they end up on the couch. If your kids are sick in bed you get to traipse up and down the stairs to tend to their needs. Lug the laundry up and down the stairs.
