I have to hand it to the Americans, they do tend to be very polite and articulate. They're also very generous with their time. If you need a hand packing your shopping, they'll help you. Yes, they are different culturally, and can be a bit loud for Brits at times, but in the same breath, us Brits probably come across as stand offish and aloof, almost snobbish to them. 2 very different cultures, but still unified, even if we don't always see eye to eye on things.

I recall having a conversation with an American University friend years ago and his realisation that his nations history did not begin at Plymouth rock and that much of British history was also his history prior to his ancestors departing these shores. After his wakeup call he told me he looked at much of British culture as his, he went on a tour of his British roots and heritage, he said he stopped feeling like a foreigner and more like a relative visiting family.

*Shane* : ".... they already have 100, 200 year old churches" This is so sweet, and it did make me chuckle. A one hundred year old church would have been built in 1923. That is not old to us (nor is a 200 year old church). There are numerous churches and Cathedrals in England that are over 1 _millennium_ old. Thousand year old buildings are not uncommon here; there are even pubs that are well over a thousand years old, some even going back to the 6th century (560 AD). I guess the saying is true: The English think 100 miles is a long distance, and the Americans think 100 years is a long time 😀

@@DaydreamersBarn I was going to make the same comment but someone beat me to it. 200 year old churches are new to us. We tend to think of the age of things by the thousand, not hundreds. There are things in Westminster Abbey that are over a thousand years old. Talking of age did you see on the BBC News about the rare dinosaur that has just been discovered here in Dorset near me.... It's like the ocean version of a T-Rex ! There's the BBC clip on You Tube titled "Colossal Sea Monster unearthed in UK" .... It goes back millions of years! I know the feeling because I am an old fossil too !! 💖 :) Bob x

Yes, I thought the same. My home town has Thornbury Castle built in the early 1500's and now a fine hotel and restaurant. Just down the road is Berkeley Castle, built in 1067, with a slightly macabre history, but with a great pub a short distance away.

@bobbybigboyyes I completely understand, but he was meaning is that some of our US churches are only 200 or 400 years old in the United States, not meaning here in the UK. I only found this channel a few days ago. And subscribed pretty well straight away, and watched - and thoroughly enjoyed - several videos from who have already become two of my very favourite KZbin Americans. But this video has just blown me away. What wonderful, articulate, polite and thoughtful - and quite brave - young people! Such a credit to your parents, as you all are to your country. Totally demolishing the stereotype view that, sadly, so many here have of Americans. You and your family put me in mind of a few years ago, when my wife and I were on vacation in Normandy in early June. A number of other guests at the small hotel were quite young American guys, in uniform. I confess, we were amazed at just how courteous and polite and articulate - and smartly-presented - those young guys were. We said at the time, the US could not wish for better ambassadors. And that they were clearly proud to serve their country, and in turn their country had every reason to be proud of them. Thank you all, for sharing your thoughts with us, and for your positivity towards our own country. You put many of us here to shame.

This is an area I'm really not expert! With your baking skills, have you tried making pies? They may be difficult. Pies are a big thing over here; not just fruit pies, but savoury pies. There are also Cornish pasties, and scones. And of course, a Victoria Sandwich or Victoria Sponge. I am no cook, but a good cookery book - if it's still in print - is the Good Housekeeoing cookery book. It gives all the standard recipes.

Firstly, Colette sounds so much like mum/mom!! Some of our history has been 'exported' to the USA, though ours goes back amuch further. It's highly likely that some of your ancestors were from these shores originally. I beleive that President George Washington originated from Washington, County Durham (as it was at the time). Then there are those who crossed the Atlantic on the 'Mayflower'. Add to that the place names that have been 'acquired', such as Washington (DC or State); Peterborough (Cambridgeshire/MA); Boston (Lincolnshire/MA) and many, many others. Another example is that I can go to New York without leaving the UK. How? It's a village to the north of North Shields, close to Newcastle upon Tyne. I could go on!! As Colette and Shane commented, we have a shared heritage and more similarities than differences.

Same language different culture. When you travel you tend to take your culture with you and judge everything from that perspective. It takes a while sometimes for the penny to drop why people say, do, think, different things. It's one of the nice things about travelling. British culture varies from place to place while we share certain aspects of what it is to be British, there are variations in being Scottish, Irish, Welsh, English, Cornish, even London, which people can be highly protective of. Accents, sayings, words can vary as well. On the subject of words, colour, armour, flavour, has a u in it, analyse, paralyse an s, even as I'm writing this KZbin is telling me I'm spelling these wrong - drives me crazy 🙂 Travelling and labelling, catalogue and dialogue. What is it with Americans and "u"? 🙂

The shops don't have to pay any sales tax on food, anyway, so that keeps the prices cheaper. Also books, travel guides, maps, etc. etc. - all free of tax. Most healthcare finance comes from tax on gasoline. So, in resumé - I don't think our total taxes are much different to yours, and we get health care thrown in for free.!!

Hello. Jess & Chris, Colette and Shane. Colette UK history / baked goods / sights / accents / sayings // Shane single price, no after sales tax, tips / Scottish Highlands / churches / direct opinions / accents / variety of small businesses . I like Shane's Minot AFB blue top (North Dakota). What is noticeable is how they have very similar mannerisms / looks to the parents. I have been following this channel for just under a year. I also follow US sites such as Jay Leno's Garage / Hey Look Squirrel / Eclectic Beard / It's JPS / Magic Geekdom etc. I like your Christmas tree. I hope you all have a lovely Christmas, and all the best to the USAF ( I like planes, and used to go to lot of air shows in the UK, especially RAF Waddington near Lincoln. A UK expression for something nice is smashing, as a nice day out would be a smashing time, smashing little cafe , smashing or lovely little church or meal etc. Homely has a different meaning in the UK to the USA. In the US it means a bit dated, dumpy, scruffy, but here in the UK it means snug and welcoming, as in a compliment. Your house would be homely (kind and inviting).

Love that you love farmers markets and produce - it doesn't last as long but it is all the better for that! Do you listen to local (ie British) radio? Specifically you youngsters, I'm curious what you think of the music. I recommend BBC Radio 1 for its variety of what's current. Ditto, I guess, for the old wrinklies - do you listen to BBC Radio 2 and Radio 4? I deliberately picked BBC stations because they aren't infested by hideous adverts - I *HATE* adverts! There are plenty of commercial stations to listen to, of course. On that score - I believe terrestrial commercial TV and radio in the UK has many fewer adverts than the US, and they tend to be more entertaining here? What do you all think?
@DaydreamersBarn

We agree, fresher food, and don't last longer, but we don't have to worry about as many preservatives. We listen to whatever is on. The BBC one seems to be one we find often. Don't know if it's because of reception or content. But we do enjoy hearing what's going around and hear locally. That is something we notice with less advertising. For sure, more in America. Thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers 🍻 Chris and Jess.

This video seems the ideal place to mention some things that will greatly help you, Colette and Shane, to not get in to trouble with British friends your age. I know Colette is going to an American school on base, but if she is out shopping in a mall in Norwich or London, for example, do NOT ask your friends if they have their fanny pack/fanny bag. NEVER, EVER use that phrase outside your home or off base. If you see an old dear trip over and she lands on her bottom do NOT ask if she has a sore fanny. Shane, if you see a pretty girl at school, don't say to your mates that she has a really nice fanny, especially if you are talking to her brother. I think this covers most of the dire mistakes that you might make. I'd love to hear what you think of British people's teeth and old men's grooming standards re nasal hair and eyebrows ...
@DaydreamersBarn

Thanks for the important etiquette lessons. Don't want to get them into a situation they don't need to be in. Cheers 🍻 Chris and Jess.

Well done but if you're going to bake anything or even cook something beware of the measurements and even what you are using to measure with because although we have the same name ie oz , pints etc the British measurements are bigger than American ones so the markings could be wrong ,also any books you're using will be wrong as well depending were they were printed so research before using . An American that has lived a long time has just found out why her cooking isn't as good , all due to the markings on her jugs ( made and marked in the USA ) while using a British cook book that was using British weights ( perhaps you can send a complaint to them 😂😂 Now you why in game thrones the people from Up North talk the way they do .
