Jesse Owens in an interview said that Hitler congratulated him personally and shook his hand. Hitler rarely did this and never with a foreign athlete. While in Germany he was treated like a celebrity. Back in America he was permitted to meet the president but was quickly ushered out of the White House because the president was eating a meal with dignitaries and blacks were not permitted to eat with whites. Also what you weren't taught in school: Germany dominated the 36' olympics.

My Grandmother, Martha Murdoch, who was Scottish, sat next to Jesse in class and used to help him with his school work. She said he was really nice. When he returned home FDR snubbed him and he was made to enter the Waldorf Astoria via the goods lift. In Berlin he was not made to segregate.
