I was thinkin about this.. Seems like the regular Americana defense would work even standing. And tightening the fist locks the wrist against wristlocks.. Maybe it would be more efficient to use it like Shinya Aoki and lock the Americana up when in a clinch or in a close in boxing situation. Anyway nice to see other people working on this

Samir, I am a long time student and instructor in the martial arts. I appreciate all of the information that you share with the masses! Your passion for training and teaching is contagious! I have been looking for some pad drills that will help with takedown defense. Can you recommend any that I can share with my students?

Aiki should be about training the sensitivity to react to this back and forth of resistance, but it so rarely is. The next step up from this push and shove should be getting into his balance and structure, with kuzushi, to either move him around, or set him up for a throw. Again, this is rarely taught these days. Locks should also be trained ballistically in addition to being used for pain compliance. For door work and other "ethical" applications, pain compliance is the way to go, but for putting someone out of a fight, so you can leave or deal with the next guy, breaking stuff is the way it has to be - and I've never yet had to fight anyone who has just watched his mate's arm get wrecked...

Are there any situations where you would prefer this transition compaired to stepping behind with a twisting goose head? At full resistance, I have a hard time switching my grip fast enough without losing the arm as my partner is pulling away (perhaps due to having a smaller grip). Trying to decide if its worth it for me to keep working on it when the success rate is already so high with the other transition. Appreciate the knowledge!

I think that you should continue doing what has worked time and time again for you.In this case it’s more transitional training. It’s more incidental and accidental in which one you end up using. Personally not so much preference but more preparing muscle memory for the various possible action reactions that occurs under full resistance. I will try to end up with twisting goose head or hammerlock if it’s possible as these have been the most effective for control and transport.

That's Aikido, goofball. There's nothing wrong with the technique but at least give credit where credit is due.
