My parents moved to Wilmington during the war as newlyweds and my dad worked in the shipyards and went to night school to be taught welding. They built Liberty ships there at the North Carolina Ship Building Company. It was hard and could be dangerous work. But it gave my dad a career as a welder and a pipe fitter. And it gave me a chance to grow up in a wonderful city. 😊 Living there sparked my passion for the local history and there is a lot to learn. When I was a child we went on numerous field trips throughout the city and near by counties that spanned early settlers and settlements to the Revolutionary War - WW2 .

If you would like to learn more about the areas history Dr. Chris Fonvielle has written a number of excellent books about its history. By all means check them out. And I admire and am subscribed to your channel. I think you will find his book about Fort Fisher to be interesting. And the history of Wilmington as well.

I was born and lived in Wilmington until I married in ‘83 since then I’ve lived in Tampa. And I love my hometown even though it’s overcrowded so is Tampa. That being said the history up there is great and I went to the places he mentioned numerous times. Burgess-Wright house is beautiful and definitely fascinating and a must see. Pull it up on your device and take the virtual tour it is really cool. Better yet visit Wilmington and explore the area. Lots of history there.

The Trust does a valuable job in preserving sites and educating the public. It looks slick and well-managed. Apart from a small handful of sites, apart from a plaque or so most battlefields in England and there are dozens go unheralded. Towton, the biggest battle in England often called the "English Gettysburg" is rarely ever mentioned in official history in education and goes practically unnoticed.

I was 8 or 9yrs. old when the battleship was towed up the Cape Fear River. My dad had an old friend who lived on the shoreline in a small house and we watched the ship pass by as it was pulled by tug boats. It was an impressive sight especially for a small boy. There is a very good film on KZbin about the Showboat. It is a interesting film.

quite a young city in the scheme of things in America

Not really, it’s quite old in the grand scheme of the entire US. It’s older than probably 90% of towns/cities in the US. It was established as a town 40 years before the Revolutionary War.

Shame crime is so bad in Wilmington now. Makes you not want to go downtown at all

That is sad it apparently started getting worse in the late 1980’s after I moved away. I came home to visit my family as often as possible and I was walking the Sunset Park area at Christmas time when I got back from my walk my brother chewed me out for strolling by myself. That’s when I found out that crime was on the rise in that area. Of course that was quite a few years ago and it has only gotten worse with different gangs moving in and fighting to take over the drug trade. Very sad situation I left there at the right time . Of course I live in Tampa Fl. so I need’nt say more about crime it’s terrible here too on a bigger scale.
