Castle Rising looked great, particularly in the autumnal light. I like to imagine the people that once gathered in those halls. The large square holes in the walls were for the heavy beams that supported the floors, so back in the day, the castle would have been even more complex. I suspect that the high rise around the castle was spoil from excavating the moat. An incredible feat of engineering. Stay safe.

I'd like to suggest a visit to Colchester Castle which was built on the foundations of the Temple of Claudius, the first Roman temple to be built in Britain. Colchester, known as Camulodunum to the Romans, was the original capital of Roman Britain but was sacked during the Boudican revolt of AD63. Camulodunum was subsequently rebuilt, but the capital was moved to Londinium. There is a major exhibit about the Boudican revolt and the destruction of Camulodunum in the museum which is now housed in the castle.

When I was kid I loved exploring castles (I still do) and would drag my parents to any castle near where we were on holiday. I live near Portchester castle (at the top of Portsmouth harbour) which has Roman walls and a keep from the middle ages. My wife grew uip in Portchester and the castle was her playground. I would recommend a visit, especially as it so close to Portsmouth and the Historic Dockyard with HMS Victory, HMS Warrior and the Mary Rose. Close by is the D Day Museum in Southsea. It would be worth a weekend away and you could fit in a visit to Chichester and Fishbourne Roman Palace.

William's wife, Adeliza, was gifted Arundel Castle in W.Sussex on the death of her 1st Husband, Henry 1st. William became the 1st.Earl of Arundel. Hi, I live near Castle Rising. The tea rooms are worth a visit. If you had followed the road to the left of it, you would have seen more old character buildings. There is also a public footpath at the bottom of that road on the right which passes through the Howards land close to their residence.🙂

I used to live in a cottage at Castle Rising right on the edge of the moat, you can see it a few times on the video. Gorgeous place! The trouble with living somewhere like that is you start to take it for granted. I now live about 2 miles away, drive right past the castle most days & don't give it a second thought. You kinda forget what is there. Its a shame.

What a coincidence, a few years ago I called in at Castle Rising on my way to stay in Hunstanton. During my stroll around the ruins I bumped into an American lady and her young daughter who was visiting the ruins. I told her about other places in the area to visit in North Norfolk. I don’t suppose you’ll read this, but I have an idea for you. RAF Upottery (aka Smeatharpe) in Devon is the airbase that Easy Company took off from in Band of Brothers. The runways are still intact but very degraded. One end of the main runway has been turned into a small oval for motorsports. They’ve got a banger cars meeting on 22nd December. A classic British event featuring races where cars race with full contact allowed. The final race is usually a destruction derby, with the last car moving the winner. Great fun to watch but dress warm!

Another lovely video. thank you. The first castle included a great deal of flint, for which your area is well known. In Neolithic times, flint was traded from there, across northern Europe. As for apples, the favourite cooking apple is the Bramley, a cooking apple. Great for apple sauce and apple pies. For apple jelly (jam without the bits) I suggest crab apples, which you will find in the wild.

You've shared dozens of vlogs showing beautiful aspects of the UK countryside, and I have often asked myself how we can protect these sites without cramming more and more people into a reducing acreage of available space. In 1950 when I was a six year old lad, the population of the UK was 50 million ; in 2026 it is projected to be 70 million; in 2036 73 million. I have witnessed, seen and experienced the enormous impact, particularly on local communities, and it has not been positive. You are experiencing the remnants of a previously ultra glorious island. If you fancy going back even further in time you should check out Grimes Graves near Thetford. It is a Neolithic flint mine. There is not much to see at ground level, but you can descend into one of the pits and see how pre-historic families mined flints from the surrounding chalk.

I love Castle Rising, I lived in King's Lynn for many years and as a kid we used to roll down the earthworks into the moat. I have watched and enjoyed quite a few of your videos, are you stationed at Lakenheath or one of the other bases in Norfolk / Suffolk? You have visited so many sights local to the area. Apologies if you have already visited these, but as a suggestion for another days exploring, try Sandringham Estates, Blickling Hall and if it is dry and sunny, drive around the coastline of North Norfolk. Thornham beach is as beautiful as anywhere in the country, a bit of a hike along foot paths that navigate the Salt marshes but the final destination is wonderful and on a sunny Winter's day you'll capture some beautiful photographs. Have fun and enjoy Norfolk!

I used to play American Football many years ago with servicemen from Lakenheath, Mildenhall and Alconbury, happy days! At Castle Rising which as you know is in Norfolk, you walked up a long stone stairway. It is said that Queen Isabella - the wife of King Edward 2nd, can be heard laughing hysterically on that very staircase. Isabella was - I believe - the instigator of the plot that resulted in Edward's murder when Isabella had as her lover, Sir Roger Mortimer, who was later executed I believe. King Edward was supposedly murdered by having a red-hot iron pushed into his "fundament"...... make of that what you will.

King Edward II was bisexual. People were not as intolerant about this back then as one would think, but the trouble was, he treated his boyfriends with totally excessive favouritism, which irked the nobles. His wife Isabella wasn't that pleasant, being the daughter of an evil French King, Philip IV. (He was the one who destroyed the Knights Templar on trumped-up charges.) In 1327, in alliance with her boyfriend, one of the most capable and dangerous of all English nobles, Roger Mortimer, Earl of March, she deposed her husband - nominally in the name of her 14-year old son, Edward III. But young Edward seized Roger and executed him in 1330. The traditional story is that Edward II was horribly murdered in 1327, but recently this story has been challenged. A letter from a Genoese merchant - the Fieschi letter - reveals that a deal with the Pope meant that Edward II was allowed to live out his days in a monastery in the Italian Alps. (Edward II would have been quite happy with this, since he never really wanted to become King.) All sorts of small details add up to me that this story is right. Edward III was quite an upright man, and I doubt he would have treated his mother as well as he did if she had indeed murdered his father. So she was allowed to have a luxurious retirement at Castle Rising.

@@DaydreamersBarn Yes I can second Framlingham Castle, you could probably go see Orford castle at the same time. If I remember correctly you can see Orford castle from the walls of Framlingham. I think Framlingham was built by a private family/Landowner and Orford was built within view by the King to remind the family who's in charge. Its also Ed Sheerans home town and the inspiration for Castle On The Hill, the song by him.

@@DaydreamersBarn When you visit Framlingham castle, be sure to drive a few miles north to Laxfield and visit a pub called the Low House. It dates back to the 15th century. It's rather different from most pubs.

Norman castles. Built by forced English labour to protect the invading aristocracy from the the natives who's land they had just stolen,impose alien rule and serfdom for the peasantry . Their forced work on the Lord's land( previously their own) produced all the wealth and luxury these usurpers consumed. For the next 500 years they treated common people with the utmost brutality. Death was the sentence for hundreds of the most trivial offences while the nobles and clergy were not subject to the same laws. Unfortunately,not only Americans, but most British,who should know better,think these castles are romantic,symbols of our glorious past. If they think of Medieval times,courtly love,jousting and chivalry,damsels in distress will be what springs to mind. Not the horrific brutality,cruelty ,inequality and oppression suffered by the vast majority of the population.

@ as Americans you probably cannot appreciate our history. When travelling back in time we are fortunate, and able to see, hear and touch our historical past. Do not pass through on a time agenda, stop, absorb and touch the history. Feel the masonry, hug the stones. Common analogy of Americans in the uk. Board the coach, visit Warwick in the morning, Stratford on Avon in the afternoon. ‘ we have seen British history’. Recommend Avebury in Wiltshire. The start of early british foundations. Happy and safe travels. 🇬🇧😀
