As a defender myself and I’ve been victimto this😂 when the team is well drilled you have to be calm patient and be able to anticipate the pass depending were the ball is. Pay attention to the players movement and not only the ball. If you only follow the ball you will most likely go get it in the net😂🤣

As a coach. This is so hard to teach. You don’t plan these plays, but you have to teach people the basis of how to make this natural. 1) hunger. All players need to be hungry to find space. No complacency. It’s mentally tiring to be always searching for pockets of space, but you need to do it. 2) tactics. You need to know what to look for. If a player is running towards you, go in the opposite or perpendicular direction. If a player is on your left shoulder, receive the ball with your right. 3) skills. Anyone can pass the ball, but can you do it with the right weight, direction and under pressure? 90% passing accuracy is not good enough, you need to be at 95%+ skills to be able to depend on that or else you lose the ball and get countered. 4) physicality. All those lunges and stop start runs is tiring. But it’s the only way to get a metre of space away from your opponent.

You said it all. That’s why it is not so easy to set up in your team. I would add that it can also be dangerous for your team if not done perfectly. Because, if you lose the ball, it won’t be on a side or in the opposite 16. It will be at the center of the field with only the last defensive line left (which will often be high on the ground). So it’s highly effective with the right players, but also high risk. No mistakes allowed

There's a lot of communication within the game you can't hear. But ever single player is talking out loud. Teammates are the eyes behind your back. As a teammate you yell and tell your teammate(s) what to do and where to go for a better play to be executed or best for the squad. Don't forget that in Futbol, unlike most sports, you don't necessarily have to go towards goal, but try to keep possession and tire the opponent out then score. So when you asked "how do you know he's behind you" is because someone told him he was. They make it look easy I know but it takes more than skill, it's all teamwork.

You're right. The idea behind the tiki-taka offense is creating triangles to break the press. But because there's 11 players on a team, whoever has the ball is always part of more than one triangle (if that makes sense)

FYI, “Tiki-taka” (the expression) was invented by Spanish (NBA and then) soccer narrator Andres Montes. It was during the World Cup of 2006 and the first time he said that it was referred to the Brazilian National Team. Then it was used generally for every team that based their game on continuous passing and long possessions, like Barcelona and Spain a couple years after that. Andres Montes was really famous in Spain because he invented nicknames for every player, at the beginning in the NBA, and then in soccer: - Tiburón Pujol - ET Pau Gasol - Jordan Airlines - Sweet Iniesta - “I do whatever I want, whenever I want, and whatever I please” Shaq - Ratatatatatatatataaaaaa!!! (Clutch 3-pointer from far away) He was a piece of art! Worth the watch!

He came to barcelona and integrated that style. Besides xavi, iniesta, and messi being great players, they grew up being tought that style from coaches who were coached by cruyff..witch in this case is pep Guardiola. It's not like xavi and and iniesta came in one day and said "hey were gonna play like this" they just mastered it the best. But other players like pique, puyol, dani alves, rakitic, neymar, pedro, david villa, busquets, deco, ronaldinho, they all played the tiki taka very well. But the most important thing is to have a coach that has everyone doing their job and knowing where to be, and having a clear gameplan. It’s basically the way the San Antonio Spurs played the entire 2014 year with pop. Pass and move to find space but they keep ball possesion. Like a constant passing offense. The Barcelona team from 2008 till 2012 was almost impossible to get the ball from them they had like crazy ball possession each game. To play like this you have to have players who are very good dribblers, who have good ball control and who can move and find open space very well basically read the lines. Not every team can play like that because they don’t have the players or the system to play like that

Tiki Taka first started when Johan Cruyff was Barcelona manager, but when Pep Guardiola took that role he adopted the style and advanced it to what we know today, the term Tiki Taka was first used in 2006 by a Spanish broadcaster named Andrés Montes. the style became the trademark of the Barca club where all Barca school players train to play in this style.

6:29 actually it's pretty hard to practice this style. Barcelona had pretty skillful midfielders like Xavi and Iniesta, and very technical forwards like Messi, Neymar and Suarez. Your team also needs a lot of stamina to be able to move back and forth the whole game.

It's actually termed positional play and it's the main element of used by teams to keep possession of the ball and move it freely pass the opposition. The main element of positional play is positioning or off-the-ball movement. The players understand that even if they are not directly involved in the play, they can help their team by being in the correct position. Players can also create space for their teammates or drag opposition players out of their position with clever off-the-ball movement.

“Playing football is very simple, but playing simple football is the hardest thing there is.” Cruyff. The thing about tiki taka is that it is very hard to execute. the players not only need the skill to do one touch passing you also need the vision to know where the bal needs to go before it arrives at your feet. even then it is quite easy to defend unless there is a lot of moment without the ball. The only way for this too work is to have players in the team who are willing to run behind the defense before the ball arrives, they need to trust their teammates to see their run and pass the ball on time so they get it just at the moment before they go offside. A way more effective style of play is high press on the opposing defence. If you intercept the ball close to their goal their defense is often out of position and you only need 1 key pass to get in scoring position, this gets way more chances than the tiki taka style where teams pass the ball around a lot.

Tiki taka is a way for the team with the ball to disrupt the defending team’s organization. The point is to move the ball quickly between players so that one defending player moves out of position and create the open space for the next ball to be played in. It was so effective Barcelona won every single possible competition in one year, 6 trophies. That's until Mourinho's Inter de Milan found the way to defeat it: strong, well positioned defence with pretty much the whole team (aka 'parking the bus') and a couple fast wingers to counterattack once the attacking team is deep in your half of the pitch.

Chicago won Six NBA Championships while Barcelona won six Major trophies (La Liga, Copa del Rey, Champions league, Super Spanish Cup, Super Europe cup, and Fifa world cup) in one year 2009. Subsequently Barcelona also won another La liga in 2010, 2011, 2012, Copa del Rey 2011, 2012 and Champions league in 2011 Spain soccer National team adopted tiki taka as well and won European Cup (2008, 2012) twice and one World Cup (2010)

Actually Tiki Taka was coined by a spainish national coach, Javier Clemente. After that during the 2006 World Cup, an spanish TV commentor called Andrés Montes (known previously for commentate NBA in Spain) used the expresion to define the Spanish play during the competition. This style finally payed off for the Spanish team at the 2008 Eurocup, 2010 World Cup and 2012 Eurocup. The media adopted and it means a style to teamplay, giving priority to pass the ball and move the game like that. The point is that a mooving ball can be always faster than any defence or can breach in faster than any player running. So if you have people that can execute and control fast and quick passes with a coordinated moovement and possitionting you have it. Another key was to maintain the possesion of the ball as much as you can. This tenchique was mastered by Barcelona FC and the Spanish National Team between 2006 and 2014 (mainly because most of midfielders, like Xavi or Iniesta, came from Barcelona FC to play in the national team). This tactic has been mainly developed in La Masia, the Barcelona FC training center for the younglings. A school that follows the style of Johan Cruyff, who played and then coach for Barcelona. He was a Ducht that played during the 70s known for the Dutch style called Total Football. The Netherland National team in the 70s known as the Clockwork Orange has been the base for the Football in Barcelona. Hence tiki-taka AKA tiquitaca is the Spanish evolution to that Dutch style which I totally recommend you to check. I'm from Spain were Football(not soccer) is a real big thing and I really enjoy your videos. Football IQ is just different. Players just have a sense of where their teammates are/will be, and there is a feeling of where and when to play the pass or make a run. It's so complex that it is challenging to simplify. Like Peps Barcelona squad, they adopted total football, allowing all players of all positions to feel comfortable and confident to move anywhere on the pitch. That's why you see Messi receive the ball so deep in the midfield and then either end up scoring in the box or have another midfielder/attacker finish the job. It truly is an art because of how difficult it is to execute.

A lot of it is chemistry too. You know the player is on your right hip cause he's been there before. Players are always making themselves aware of their surroundings. Almost like the way a swimmer turns their head rapidly for breaths. Soccer players always need their heads on a swivel.

The reason this isnt done all the time is because this takes extreme team coordination, vision and timing. Every participating player has to make the perfect decision in a split second while also keeping their heads up to scan the field for incoming opponets or other teammates that find an opening, the passes have to be extremely accurate, because as you can see in the video many of these tiki takas were done extremely close to their opponents, and every pass is done without touching the ball to control it, which makes passing harder, since it can come in at weird angles, it could be spinning and you have to use weight and power more carefully and more controlled. The tiniest mistake leads to losing possession and a pretty devastating counterattack, since while they are doing the tiki taka, the teammates are out of position a lot of the time, which leaves the midfield open

It’s called trusting your teammates. Thiery Henry said it best when he explained Guardiola’s coaching methods . The 3P’s passing possession and position, he also stated that you always had to trust your teammates to pass, to have possession and to be in the right position at all times . its not that they are set plays , but the teams that play this way regularly will practice pass and go like this as a fundamental part of their general training , to the point that during a game it becomes mostly instinctual . its only the better clubs with more technically gifted players that will adopt this style as their standard style of play , and the thing about " tiki - taka " is that its not just about waiting for the ball and playing quick lay off passes , but constantly moving into the space and making runs off the ball carrier . so when they play those no look style back passes its because they are expecting the man next to them to be making that run off them. that and they will obviously be communicating with each other too.

it's mostly a team-playing style. it's usually about keeping possession and combining passes with your teammates to either get out of pressure, or attack. nowadays, due to the pressure top teams are able to put on the opposite side, Tiki Taka is gradually banishing, making physical attributes and individual skills more important than possession and combinations. new football basically. Bielsa, Leeds' manager, is probably one of the few managers that are still able to use this playing style effectively. you should check him out. he's a genius.

They use it a lot to gain the maximum hold of the ball and deny the other team to take a chance in attacking, also they don't lose a lot of energy as they move a little bit while the other team do all the running after the ball.

Once in a 5 a side match I had such control that I was laughing, literally out loud laughing, going around and through people. Did get kicked after that cos the opposition doen't like humiliaton. I remember 'don't let him shoot' just before I blasted it into the bottom left from the right.

Tiki Taka is a style of play that Pep Guardiolla adopted and perfected at Barca at the beginning of his coaching career, and the reason of that success is having amazing player who made it possible, like Xavi, Iniesta, Messi, buesqets, Dani alves, and fabregas. Tiki Taka is all about creating triangles in midfield and make the most amount of passes to tire the defending team by making them run after the ball, until they create an opening, and when the do, other teammates make runs and get the ball passed to them to take the chance of scoring a goal as quickly as possible, and also by keeping the triangles between the attackers for short and through passes. Although this style of play was invincible to play against, there are defending methods to beat it, and that is simply by dropping back all the defenders around the 18 yard box, and close the gaps between defenders. This method is known as (Park The Bus). Jose Mourinho’s Inter Milan did it in 2009/2010 agains Barca in Champions League Semifinals and won the game.

Unlike basketball, you can't directly draw plays since the pitch is big af and there various formations that teams use. They might use one formation for offense, another for defense. A couple of players might defend man-to-man or man mark, some will just hold the line. The philosophy, the style of football, and the chemistry are what's practiced, and of course the ability to pull off the passes, find teammates, and making yourself easy to find for your teammates. This is also the reason why many teams cannot do this kind of passing game effectively if not at all.

It can be compared to a simple motion offense in basketball. It's all about keeping the possession and moving the ball around to get the best look, no matter how long it takes. This is why many people consider it a boring playstyle because the ball will get moved back to the defensive players more than what an attacking pressure style of play that for example Liverpool and RB Leipzig uses.

There are couple things to tiki taka. First thing is something you spotted: triangles. Not just one, but many triangles. At all times you're part of several triangles of players moving around forming and reforming, and ball keeps being passed along those. The second is that movement: at no time you're really static, your movement without a ball is huge part of it: making yourself available for pass, going for various options that might or might not happen. It's all very dynamic and fluid, and while nothing is really scripted you kind of know where the ball might go, and you train to basically cover all the possible options. Third thing is no set formation, really. There's usually general shape, but tiki taka is very much evolution of total football mentality, meaning all players basically can and will cover all other positions whenever the game makes them. In tiki taka it's not uncommon to see pretty much all players except for keeper out of their position. Fourth thing is tempo. You have to manage the tempo of the game, sometimes slow down for a while passing the ball around the box, and basically out of nowhere suddenly accelerate getting through in 1 pass because you found that one chink in the armor for through ball. And finally, the most important part that will enable you to play tiki taka... everyone has to be extremely good passer. It will only work if you can consistently make a first touch pass under pressure of a defender. Players like Xavi, that made tikitaka work, would have couple hundred passes per game with >95% pass completion, and that 5% would be some risky through ball etc. Pretty sure Busquets at some point had something like 120+ passes completed in a game and 100% pass completion. That's what it takes to make tiki taka work, because if you fuck up, you're often very up the field and counter WILL murder you. It's also what led to gegenpressing: you put more pressure on the players further up, and you do it all game long, making them screw up more and giving you chances (granted gegenpress in offense is quite similar to tikitaka except a bit more direct).

it's not drawn up. yea the coach has his certain tactics and style of play he wants you to do based on position and skillset but most of tiki-taka is all improvised. they do it so well because they constantly train with each other and know how to play off of each other's strengths and know every person specific tendencies which only comes with repetition in training and familiarity with teammates. the concept is to always keep possession and never lose the ball and they do a lot of rondos which is a possession-based specifically targeted to keep the players under pressure and to give them the composure and quick thinking to play quick passes and to always think several steps ahead of the defenders who are very close to them.

This technique is used as well to wear down the opponent... if you play like this enough, eventually your opponent is gonna run of stamina by chasing the ball... it's a strategy used a lot in the nineties by FC Barcelona with Johann Cruyff as trainer and it's been used by more and more teams from there on... The counterpar is that you need a very technical set of players to do this, since they have to think fast and have a very good control of the ball...

This is why its much harder to score vs set plays in bball or football the defense isn't predictable like that u have to adapt to the situation

Ive read some comments its not necessarily free style, some players learn this trough skill and chemistry witch is the most necessary thing to execute tiki taka well. Bad teams just defend and kick it foward and hope someone scores. But a player with lesser quality can also execute this trough training drills consisting of triangulations of 2/3/4 players so it is very important for players to be well positioned and follow the flow of the tikit taka up in empty spaces to create passing lines and always look around before the ball gets to you so you can execute a pass, communication is also essencial those heel flicks you saw the only way of defending this is placing 11 players behind the ball or having a well drilled high press. Im not an expert I’ve just played a lot of football/soccer in various teams it’s very fun to do!! Hope this was helpful.

This is fairly new form of offense, and it's usually used by superior technical teams against weaker teams that would park a bus in front of the goal and defend with 10 players the whole game. Until 20ish years ago most football teams had classical '9' which is a striker that would lay deep and wait for the ball either from wing play or through balls from the middle, which is fine but it's not so effective against teams that refuse to play offense and plan to defend for 90 minutes hoping to get a point or maybe some odd 3 pointer from a counter attack. With tiki-taka you attack though the middle which was the least popular way of offense, on small packed spaces and trying to create space with series of short fast passes and advance forward, important thing about this is that Barcelona and Spanish national team introduced this tactic, playing without classical '9' striker (something like Rockets trying to play small ball with no big man this year) and using either something called false-nine or not have a predictable striker at all. NOW while pretty this is not so effective against teams that are technically up to your standard as they will cancel you out and with so many midfielders in the small space you're opened up for a wing or through counter-attack so you don't see all that many teams playing this sort of offense anymore as they did in the mid 2000's.

The ball possesion of ball in those game sometimes was 75-80% of the time for barca. Even against elite teams. "If you have the ball nobody can't score you" is the Cruyff (the creator of this) philosophy

The idea is to use the ball as a carrot while passing it around to attract the defenders (ie. rabbits) of the other team towards the ball in such a way that creates space for a good final pass to a teammate who can be 1 v 1 on goal and score

Most teams do this maybe once in a match or two. The only team that does it constantly is barcelona of 2008-2014. It's effective but very very difficult to do
