It was the legendary dutch footballer Johan Cruyff who was the inception of Tiki Taka, after a career of being regarded of one of football's greatest ever players, Cruyff took to coaching in the 90s and won Barcelona's first ever Champions League trophy (this is the greatest title in club footbal, world cup is national teams) with what people now call the Dream Team. In central midfield in this so called dream team was a man called Pep Guardiola, this is the man who's known to perfect Tiki Taka. In 2008 Guardiola became the new manager of Barcelona, not the only change that happened at the club at the time as big names like Ronaldinho and Deco was shipped out of the club that same summer! There was huge doubts around the club in those times and whether or not they'd perform as they had before, many young players were implemented more than before. Noticeably Messi, Iniesta, Sergio Busquets and Xavi hernandez gained a lot of prominence with Guardiola. By the end of his 4 year tenure as coach of Barcelona, they were regarded as the best football team ever, not in the world, but of all time. They won two Champions League title, in 2009 (this was the first duel of Messi and Ronaldo) and in 2011, which is famous for being one of the most dominant Champions League final performances ever. They also won 3/4 domestic league titles, and two spanish cup finals. In 2009 Barcelona became the second team ever in European Football to win ''The Treble'', this means you must win the domestic double and the Champions League in the same season. this has only been done 4 times in history. Manchester United in 1999, Barcelona in 2009 and 2015. and by Bayern Munich in 2020. Barcelona and Guardiola had completely perfected the play style but what was most impressive perhaps is that 7-8 of the 11 players in their starting XI was homemade products that had come through Barcelona's own academy. And since they were all spanish (except Messi) they created the core of Spain's world dominating era from 2008-2012 who went on to win the European Championship twice (2008,2012) and the 2010 World Cup. Try to imagine yourself becoming a professional athlete along with 6,7,8,9 of your friends and winning literally everything and getting the stamp; The Greatest Team of all Time. It really is unreal! Barcelona was not the only team who played this way but they are the ones who perfected it and to this day Barcelona's philosophy and style of play is somewhat close to this. Altough they have been in a rough spot since their golden generation aged. Noticebeable members were the midfield trio, Andres Iniesta, Xavi Hernandez and Sergio Busquets, who are all considered among the best ever in their positions and all worth reacting to, especially Iniesta perhaps. Its alot to explain really but I think I got most of it down

Could you imagine having to try and defend against Barcelona? Not only can they move the ball in circles around you, with one touch passing on any part of their body but they can also destroy you one on one. The combination of the two make for very unpleasant defensive experiences I'm sure. That's why they can play possession so well and don't rely on counter attacks. Minimizing the amount of time defending and stopping potential goals as well. Recipe for success.

Right? Anyone whos played a long time can play like this but they do it perfectly almost every touch and in stride against world class defenders. Consistency under pressure is the hardest part of sports in general, having a team that can perform like that on a consistent basis is insane.

The only two ways to try to defend this is either A. Sit deep in your own half, no individual pressing and wait for them to come to you, that way you don't let them create space in between you and you hold your shape as a team. It's usually works when tryin to stop the other team from playing tiki taka however spending the whole game in your own box defending is a recipe for disaster, more times than not eventually the other team will score from the pressure. Or B. Press extremely aggressively when the opposing team is in their own half. That way you eliminate some risk by pressing higher up the field and further away from your goal (Also Defenders and the Goalkeeper are *usually* less technically gifted on the ball than the midfielders or strikers so there's a higher percentage of you winning the ball back) doing that you always increase the opponents risk factor as 1 slightly wayward pass or 1 overload from the pressing team means that you could win the ball back in a goal scoring positions. The ideal tiki taka formation consists of a Diamond, whichever angle of the diamond doesn't necessarily matter. The diamond because say we're in an in game situation on the left side of the field.. the player at the tip of the diamond is able to see the whole pitch and distribute the ball into space once he sees fit, the player on the left although he can see the whole field Infront of him, cannot turn left the player on the right of the diamond is usually the player who vacates his space first if he sees an overload happenin or if he can see a player running into space behind him, once he vacates that space and his opponent vacates it with him that will leave a space to find the pass and break the press usually from the player on the left side of the diamond as he's looking in that direction and finally the player at the bottom of the diamond is usually only used as an option for a (wall pass) quick 1 2 as he has his back turned away from the opponents goal. The tiki taka system is a dream to play in for any technical player whose comfortable in tight spaces, it's not just about team work although that plays a massive part to. The whole 11 players on the field (including the Goalkeeper) nowadays needs to be technically excellent. As 1 mistake may lead to a high probability chance for the opposing team. You also need an almost telepathic connection with certain players around you, you need to know when they're going to vacate space to run into it yourself or if you're not a part of that diamond you need to know when the ideal moment is to make the run behind a defence. You need to time that not just with the opposing teams players when finding space but with the person controlling the ball in that particular diamond, there's no use in making a run into space when the player with the ball either isn't looking up or isn't confident enough in the pass reaching you for whatever reason.. The best team at least while I've been alive to do this has hands down been Barcelona back in the Messi, Busquets, Xavi, Iniesta days. I don't think you could form a better diamond than that and they proved this by dominating world football while playing this style of football. Tika Taka used to be the meta in football , nowadays it's more about gegenpressing. Pretty much the same kind of chemistry play , but when your team is not on the ball. Passing quickly like that takes a huge amount of skill and concentration. So if your whole team is playing together and pressing them like crazy , they high likely lose the ball after a few passes.

To put it into American terms, this is like the bulls triangle offense but sped up. There’s always at least two options to play near the ball. And at this level, the ball moves so much faster than you can run to chase it

It has its weaknesses. Too much focus on the passing can mean missing the opportunity to take a clear shot. The game has evolved more to a tactic of Tiki Taka mixed with long ball play for fast breaks. You drown out the ball movement with packing in bodies in defence then when you steel the ball, you long pass to the strikers upfront who make a fast break, so the game had to evolve to cancel that threat.
