I think for american sports to talk about pressure is pretty unironic. European football is built on long history, culture, traditions and conflicts between groups of people. You'd know for sure when you're attending a big football rivalry match in Europe. The pressure to perform week in week out is on another level. Basically in the Premier League you'd see a bunch of teams fighting for Champions League football next season, which is very vital for the extra revenue, and signing better players. So you're basically setting yourself up for a better season if you qualify. It's kinda difficult to explain. But I'll just say the fans care a lot more about results and how their team is doing, especially top teams compared to how people cares about results in american sports. It's not even comparable.

Having no play-offs on the top of the league actually makes it way more interesting. It means that the winning team has to be on point for the whole season. In a play-off style, it doesn’t really matter if you end up 1st or 4th in the league, which takes a lot of excitement out of league matches. On top of that, instead of just having a final between the best two every year, in soccer every end of year scenario is different. This creates a unique title battle every year. For example, the team on top of the league could only need a tie against a bad team to win the championship, but then dramatically lose the last game to have the team in 2nd snatch away the title. It creates different odds and outcomes every year.

I do like the hybrid system they have for club rugby - at least in France, there's a whole home-and-away league, and *then* a 6-team playoff, with 1&2 getting a bye for the semifinals, while 3-6 & 4-5 duke it out to qualify. Keeps the regular season meaningful, but still gives the solid-but-not-perfect team a shot at the championship.

Imagine being bottom off the league and knowing it doesn’t matter because you’re still in the league next year 😂😂 American sports is a joke. The only country that runs sports like that. Ridiculous how people could think that’s even fun. Americans tried coming over and making a league with all the best teams around Europe to be in a super league and run like American leagues. Europe rioted because that ruins sport. So much more fun watching teams fight to stay up and watch new teams come into the league and have a chance to win something. They may loose money going down a league but they easily make that money up if they can come back up again. Big money earned if you’re promoted. And don’t they sit the home fans and away fans next to each other? Imagine sitting westham next to millwall fans. Someone isn’t coming out alive.

So if any American here who read this comment. Did you guys think Giants winning super Bowl 2011 was the best team on that season (with 9-7 record)? Just because they had won the playoffs games and the final game (super bowl) and claim yourself as the best team on the league? Compare to patriots with their almost perfect season run, which one is better in terms of quality and consistency? So with this model there is kind of meritocracy for clubs, they who had consistency were rewarded. They who can defeat all opponents were deserved to be called the best in the league. In they who had bad records would be punished by kicked out from the league and waving tens (or hundreds for current seasons revenue in premier League) of millions euros not dollars. Ain't no such thing as tanking happened in this model. Like the Eagles did few seasons ago just to prevent Giants to proceed to playoffs or intentionally lose the game for better draft picks. If your team bust, you would be sent to shadow realms.

In the league there is pressure on every single game of the season. If you don’t win 3 pts on your first game .. that could be decisive for the title. In American sports there is no pressure on the games before the playoff - if you don’t cate about the seeding. Just different systems. And being used to a different flow of the coverage through the year.

Correct. Whether you're going for the league title, Champions League qualification or trying to avoid relegation every game matters. Winning every week is important and you don't want to be off the pace at all in terms of what you're trying to achieve otherwise you're falling points behind your rivals. The league system rewards the most consistent team over the 9 months and the threat of relegation for the worst teams makes the league more competitive. If there was no relegation and therefore not much at stake for the bottom teams, there would be a lot of boring and non-competitive matches.

Even big teams find it so hard to play against teams in the relegation zone since the teams in the bottom of the table fight till the end of the season to avoid relegation and teams in the top 6 always fight for the trophy through out the season and not only that but to also finish at least in the top 4 in order to play in the Champions league next season and that is what makes the sport so exciting and competitive.

In the voice of Ted Lasso i say "Makes no sense"..to say that there is no pressure without play-offs. It is usually the exact opposite beacuse the tops team has to perform good and get points to stay on top a cross the entire season or else they risk the next team under them to catch up. This is ecpecially tense when you consider the top spots guarantee participation in the Champions League or Europa League next season. And a big team not getting to play in CL results in them losing 100Mill in sponsorship money and hence stagnation. And for the bottom team it is a fight for survival to stay in the league to the very end. Play-offs ruins this completely, beacuse the team that got the last slot for the playoffs might win by playing good for a few very important games instead of playing good year round like the nr team. Besides we have cups on the side, aaand I would argue the CL also functions like a "play-off" to determine the best team across all the national leagues. What is boring is NFL, MLS all the other closed leagues where the teams are owned by the league owners and never risk anything other than draft picks.

Relegation and promotion makes more sense and is more competitive than any American League… in the USA, you have a static league and you just pay for your team to be in the top. You can be a team with great potential but without money you’ll never be champions of the nation… In football, you have to *play well* to be at the top; otherwise you get kicked out… And lower league teams that play well are promoted to the higher leagues. This is *SPORT* not *BUSINESS* . Talent before money. It’s far more competitive, far more pressure and it lets smaller teams work their way up to the top without the funds that the big teams have. Every now and then you’ll get an unbelievable underdog story like Leicester winning the premier league after years of hard work climbing the ladder. Something you never see in the US due to the structure of their sports. We also have ‘cup tournaments’ which do have playoffs at the end but the playoffs can be between any professional team in the entire country... Not just the elite teams. It’s a far superior system.

If you have no relegation or promotion allowing different teams to come up through hard work, and there is always a safety net for bad teams at the bottom like in the NFL, it just spoils competition and fair play and the entire model is about making money for those specific teams. European football leagues are very profitable, the clubs have to grind to be profitable there is no guarantees its cut throat and thats why its beautiful.

Playoffs means that you can coast the last quarter of the season if you are in the top 3 or even 4 by a decent margin, you'll make it anyway. No playoffs means you have to work your ass off to be on top. And with Relegation, the often used American term "wait 'till next year" doesn't exist!!

I think the issue is that you guys are looking at it as if it set up similar to the NFL, NBA, etc. It so different. Can I just highlight 3 places you are looking at this wrong: 1 - The Premier League is merely the tip of the iceberg Your sports usually only have around 30 teams in the country (a crazy concept for us Brits). Thus, you look at our Premier League as the only league. Yes, they are the best but the Premier League is just the top tier of 7 tiers (consisting of 140 teams) and they are all fluid. With regulation and promotion you can quickly move up and down. For instance Brentford is the Premier League this year but it was only a couple of years ago that they were down in League 2 (the 4th tier) while Sunderland is now down in League 2 (4th tier) were up in the Premier League only 10 years ago. So, you see it as being kicked out of the League but it is merely going down to the next tier. My current home team Watford will most likely get relegated this year but many actually think that will be good for us as we could do with a year to sort out the team and have good competitive matches without the pressure of the relegation battle. 2 - The Premier League is not the only competitive League While the Premier League is the top the most lucrative, attracts the big names, etc, the other leagues are just as competitive and very good. So while getting relegated isn't great, you know that next year you will be in an as competitive League but just more likely to win a few more matches. There is a slight drop in standard but if you went to a Championship game (in the second tier) you would still see a very decent game. The fact that when we have our across League competitions lots of teams beat clubs 2, 3 or 4 leagues above them shows how good a standard some of the leagues below are. Plus, while a lot support a Premier League team, your team is usually is usually your home town's team. So, if you were to go to somewhere like Bournemouth, Middlesbrough, Sunderland, etc, you will find very eager fans who don't really follow the Premier League because they only follow the league thier town's team is in. 3 - Winning the League is not everything. While the person in that video makes it sound like it, it really isn't. Only the top 3 teams by Christmas are really challenging but everyone else is also fighting for certain places. Those in 4th to 10th usually are fighting to get into the Top 5. They know they won't win the league but Top 4 qualifies you to compete in the Champions League the next year. And 5th place qualifies for another European competition. Then as it is usually tight 14th to 20th usually are fighting to keep out of the bottom 3. With lower leagues top 2 automatically get promoted and 3rd to 6th have a play off for the final spot. So, the same battle. It is only really those who are 10th to 13th who have less to play for: Too far off 5th and too far above 17th to worry. But even then we don't just have the League. The best teams compete in Europe but every team from 1st tier to 7th tier all compete in their league, plus the FA Cup and either the League Cup or FA Trophy (depending on their league). So, there is always something to play for in the season. My old home team, Southampton, is 10th in the Premier League but is in the Last 16 of the FA Cup so that is the one they still want to win. I hope this makes more sense. I do think it is sad that Americans don't see why soccer is so big here because you don't get the opportunity to see the full picture. If you have any questions, please do feel free to ask.

Well no. You have to be consistent to win the league which means you have to be good all the time while in USA you can be 7th place, go in the playoffs and win it. It's more competative without playoffs. Plus it's more interesting when you see different teams each year and every game matter because you're not trying to win the league, but you are trying to stay in the league. Plus they still have fanbases. It's not like in usa. People stick with their clubs no matter how good they are

Playoff style competition can perhaps be more exciting, but it is often unfair. In the old days, when my country's league was still in this style, there were teams that rocked in the championship, but ended up being eliminated by a bad game. The style of current leagues is much fairer, as all teams face each other and the one that wins the most games is the champion, in addition to making more sense, it really shows that it is the TRUE best team in the country. And about relegations, it's much more meritocratic, if you did badly, it's not the other teams' fault, you had 38 games to show some talent and you didn't, so bear the consequences, I find this very boring in american sports. Some teams have completely mediocre seasons, stay in the league and earn money for it, it doesn't make any sense.

In some leagues there still are play offs, like in England in the 1st division (1 league below the premier league) only 1st place goes straight into the premier league and then a few other teams go into play offs and 2 teams progress into the premier league, not every league works the same

Playoffs are the most stupid thing in sports, whoever wins a league is garunteed to be the best team. Your telling me that a team who finishes sixth but then goes on a hot streak in the playoffs deserves to win the whole tournament? They have not shown consistency. I think everyone in the comment section already explained how "no play-offs = no pressure" is not really true, but I'll give one example that I experienced myself. 2012, last game of the premier league. Manchester City snatched the league title from Manchester United in the last minutes. Not last game, last minutes. And they're not even in the same match.

Hey, English Football(Soccer) fan here, in answer to this no pressure thing…currently we are 4 games from the end of the season and there is 1 point separating the top 2 sides. 1 side has been relegated now but there are another 5 who could still fill the other 2 spots. As for the clubs in the just below the top 2 they are fighting for European football next season in the europa league and the europa conference league, the ones below 8th to about 15th are all playing for financial reasons as the higher you finish the higher the reward money is. I am a Manchester City supporter who currently are the top side. However due to City’s history I remember what it’s like supporting City in all the different stages on the league, trust me..there is pressure.

easy and very simplified explanation that may make more sense for americans: Take Basketball as a example. Imagine if every state had its own league and its own cup. like a basketball league and cup for state of california, washington, florida, and so on. Depending on the Level of the play the 2-3 best Teams from each state during a league and cup season could qualify for the yearly "NBA tournament". where the best teams from each state play each other in a group and a playoff round until a national champion is crowned and everyone has to qualify again in their state league. If Basketball would be like that. than the basketball state leagues and cups where like european soccer national leagues. And the "NBA tournament" with the best teams from each state would be like UEFA Champions League.

playoffs are fun I guess… but make it make sense that in the nba y’all play 60+ matches just for a seed lol… soccer has a league which makes every game important, has a cup which is knock out (playoffs essentially) and then a cup for all the champions/best teams to play again in playoffs..

No pressure? On each league you have the top teams competing for the title, this means that they cant afford losing points has that might make them lose the league, so they have that pressure most of the season. The bottom teams are not playing to win the title but now they are at risk of being relegated to the 2nd division, so they face pressure all season as they cant afford to lose points at a risk of leaving that division next season. The teams in the middle, in general are also competing for something. there are multiple copetitions at european level (Champions League, Europa League), the qualification for these is based on what place each teams was on its own league the previous season. The first few places go to the CL, and a few following places go to EL (how many of each country depends of each league and its a bit more complicated to explain here). But these competitions can bring a lot of money, specially for a smaller team that might get qualified. This means that even a "middle team" is competing to try to get a place high enough to be qualified to Europa League, or even Champions League. So even these, while a bit less, still face quite a lot of pressure. Now comparing to the system that i see in a lot of american sports, its seems that a team could relax for most of the season since they would only really need to give everything in the playoffs at the end, while in europe they need to do so most, if not all of the season. Its a bit ironic seeing you talking about pressure given this fact.

a point system league without relegation would be terrible, but with relegation it gains another perspective: for a team who stays at the bottom of the standings, they need to fight back at all costs to get those points and get out of that lower positions, playing even with the top teams. the champion and the top ones get the invitations for top tier continental league in next year, and 5th to 8th usually gets invitation for second tier continental league (winning this second tier league he will get invite for next year top tier continental league)

Also- Football in Europe is on another level. It's tribal. Bill Shankly once said that Football is a matter of life and death. You love your club like you love your mother. A tradition passed on from father to son. The place you are born in, or that you settle in- that is the team you WILL support FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE! EVEN IF THEY LOSE or are LOSERS! Doesn't matter what they do- you will defend them. YOU WILL ATTEND THEIR GAMES AND TAKE THEIR SIDES AT ALL TIMES! (and you'll have to fight rival fans if it comes to that) It's like being in a gang! 😀 If you're from France and Lyon is your team (doesn't matter if you're from American heritage or African or Russian heritage or whatever) playing Lokomitiv - in Russia... you WILL HAVE TO find a way to attend Wednesday evening's match! 😀 Doesn't matter if you're going by bus, train, car, air, water... or hiking- you WILL BE THERE to cheer the lads on- in the cold! (and you'll have to fight rival fans before and/or after the game- it usually comes to that)

In general, it's kind of wise to know what you're talking about before offering an opinion. No pressure unless you suck? No, because you qualify for European cups like the Champions League by finishing 2nd and 3rd too. But you didn't know that when you offered your opinion, huh? And as long as we're talking about no pressure...what kind of pressure is there on the teams that suck in American sports? Absolutely nothing, they actually get rewarded for sucking instead.

The higher your position in the league= MONEY Promoted team? = MONEY Small teams competing vs big teams in the cups? = MONEY (for the small team- a much needed cash injection) Relegation and Promotion? = FAIRNESS Gentlemen- the league is FIERCELY contested! It is played at a blistering pace- with a never-say-die attitude EACH GAME, throughout a gruelling 38-game league (with Cup games played mid-week). Keep in mind that if you're currently Liverpool or City... you can ONLY really lose 1 or 2 games the whole season, and DRAW perhaps 2 games! Anything worse than that... and you're not winning the league this season.... BUT you STILL have to finish in the top 4 IN ORDER TO be able to compete in the Champions League next year (and for the rest of this season, your chances of silverware lie in the Champions League, the FA Cup(Europa League) and the League Cup). And the rest of the top 6 teams are ALMOST just as good as you are, SO EVERY GAME is a fight to WIN! For the rest of the league- they have their own goals which ESNURES they finish as high AS POSSIBLE. Finish in 5th or 6th- and you're up for the UEFA Cup next season (ie: MONEY). This ensures all teams outside the top 6, PERFORMS all season long. By mid-season all the teams from positions 1-10 usually perform in order to secure the League, or a place in the Champions League, or a place in the EUFA Cup(Europa League). Towards the middle of the season... if it looks like you're going to have a relegation battle on your hands... YOU WILL HAVE TO PLAY TO WIN EVERY GAME! Every team from say- 11th downwards to 18th- by the mid-season point WILL HAVE TO play to win every game, to avoid relegation! Yes- Football is HIGHLY CONTESTED! PLAY-OFFS are done between teams that are UP FOR PROMOTION.

About relegation, it can be really crazy, to give 2 examples, the team that has won multiple french league titles bordeaux is now in the 3rd division of french football. In the bundesliga (german league) Schalke 04 got knocked down to the 2nd division, and afterwards started selling off assets to stabilize, like their esports divison was sold off for a fat paycheck beacuse of them being relegated in football, it is a real dangerous thing to happen to a club.
