A European football season, runs from August until May. I think switching the MLS to an Aug-to-May schedule to sync up with the other major European league schedules (and international tournaments that take place during the "off-season"), along with adopting the same transfer windows, could help the MLS take massive strides forward in terms of improving the quality of imports and exports from the league and raise the standards much higher. Also, Promotion/Relegation would re-invent the wheel for you guys.

when you think about stakes involved, the premier league table has 20 teams and half the positions on that table have significance for the teams next season... with the first 6-7 places determine if and where in the european competitions they can play and the last 3 are the relegation zone. so the pressure on teams to reach or avoid a certain position on the table is much higher. if you wonder about the 7th place yes or no question, it depends on who the cup winner is, since the cup winner qualifies for europa league but if the cup winner ends on a champions league position, a europa league spot opens up on the table.

I think he undersells how much promotion and relegation affect clubs and leagues over time. Clubs actually go up and down the pyramid A LOT, it's just the supreme powerhouses that stay relatively stable. I've seen my Swedish club being close to getting relegated to the 3rd division, and I've seen us win the Swedish 1st division. The same thing happened to Leicester in England. In Germany, Bayern Munich and Dortmund are the only clubs to have never been relegated. There are around 50 clubs that have played in the English first division, meaning that most play in lower divisions for the time being. Same in Italy. I've seen a Swedish club climb four divisions and go on to win the Swedish Cup, play in Europa League, and beat Arsenal away. Another Swedish club, formed by Kurdish immigrants, won division after division and ultimately reached the first division. Blackburn won the Premier League in 1994 and was playing in the third division by 2018. So yeah, things change drastically. It's just that you don't see it if all your focus is on Barcelona or present-day Man City.

The break between halves is 15 minutes. In league games no extra time is played, that is because the result after 90 minutes count. 3 points for a win 1 point for a tie (draw) and 0 points if you lose. Extra time (and penalty shoot outs) may apply in Cup competitions where one team has to win. The season (English Premier League (EPL)) runs approx from August to May. Teams that are successful in lots of competitions may play over 60 games. For instance in the 2022-2023 season when Man City won the Treble (Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League) they played 65 games. Their first team squad, registered for the season was 25 players. Teams have 11 players on the pitch and a number of substitutes that can be introduced during the game (the number varies in different competitions in the EPL for example it is a max of 5). Don't say "Soccer" outside the US or you are likely to get used as a football!!!!
@joshualiley
@joshualiley 10 ай бұрын
There's extra time and there's injury/stoppage time. What you were referring to as extra time is actually injury or stoppage time. At the end of the half, the referee will add on the time that was lost during that half so that 45 minutes of football was actually played. In reality, if the game is stopped for about 5 seconds, it won't be added on, usually only the larger chunks of time are, for example substitutions or injuries, hence the name injury time. For example, if there's 2 minutes worth of stoppages in a half for substitutions, 1 minute for goal celebrations and 4 minutes to attend to a serious injury, there will be 7 minutes added on to the end of the game. That will be indicated at the start of the period so the players will know, however more may be added on during that time if another stoppage takes place during stoppage time, so it's not an exact science but it gives you a rough idea. Extra time is different. This happens in knockout matches when 2 teams are tied at the end of the game and when the format of the tournament requires only the winner of the match to progress. At this point, 30 minutes more will be played, known as extra time, which is split into 2 halves of 15 minutes. Extra time can also have injury time added to it as well if some other stoppage occurs there. If the teams are still tied after extra time, a penalty shootout happens, 5 penalties each and then if still tied, sudden death until a winner is found.

Seasons run from August till May/June. Every single country has its own national main league with many divisions (first, second, third) like a pyramid plus different domestic cups and competitions where you can have any team compete. Then the biggest teams of all countries (from the highest respective domestic league) all compete for the european championships. The above applies to all colored “districts” from the continents shown in the video. Each continent works the same way All these things run at the same time. So if you play for a big team you may be playing a lot of matches competing in 2-3 different competitions. Plus, the european, african, asian, etc “districts” also hold tournaments with national teams. The biggest tournament on the planet being the world cup

In terms of added time at the end if the match (extra time as you called it), the amount of time added on is always announced to everyone once the game hits 90 minutes. However, this is a minimum amount of added time, as for example if there is a stoppage (such as an injury or a goal etc.) in the already announced added time, then the match can go on for even longer. If that happens though, this is not announced, meaning that, ultimately, it is up to the referee to decide when they think that the match is over. Hope that helps clear that up for you!

Typically a left/right wing is a very offensive role mainly playing in the offensive third of the pitch and only sporadically joining defense typically up to the middle line. The less offensive winger is called left/right mid whose main area is the middle third of the pitch but joining both offense and defense on equal measure. behind that is the defensive left/right back who is mainly in the defensive third but joins in offense when it doesn´t jeopardize defense. There are also hybrid roles like left/right wing back who are defensive players but are much more offensive than ordinary fullbacks. Since they are more often on offense they crete gaps wich can be used for counters so they are usually used in formations with 3 CB that stay behind and can cover these gaps.

He doesn’t really understand how players move from one team to another. The player has a value set by the selling team (Prem League doesn’t have many release clauses, rest of Europe does), then buying team will either pay that or they’ll try & negotiate the fee down a bit. Like buying a car I guess. If you have a release clause in your contract then selling club has to sell you for that amount if you want to move. This is complicated by players’ contracts. Players can move for free at the end of their contract, but if you’re good your team will keep trying to extend your contract so you can’t leave for free but it also means that you can’t move to another team unless someone buys you.

Yup. Three subs. And once you've been subbed off, you can't go back on. Your part in the game is done. As for possession, I'm one of those that doesn't subscribe to the 'maximise the possession' style of play. All that possession means nothing if you can't do anything with it. I prefer a style of play more like 'maximise what you do with the possession you have'. England has a 24 tier system. Premiership has 20 teams. Every other tier has 24. Pretty much any little town/village will have a club. Season runs from August to May. 2*45 minute halves. No adverts, as stated. Halftime is 10 minutes. As to how many games a season - Premiership is a 38 game season. Plus the two Cups. Plus Champions League tournament. It's possible for a team (not every player will play every single match of the season) to have a 60-odd match season over the nine month long season.

Perhaps some Canadian patriotism will enhance your interest in the sport. We are now in the best generation of Canadian soccer, and we will be co-hosting the 2026 World Cup with the US and Mexico. Some of these European teams are readily available on TSN or Sportsnet. So here's some Canadians playing in Europe: Alphonso Davies, Bayern Munich, Champions of the German Bundesligue; Jonathan David, currently with Lille (likely transferring) Ligue 1 in France; Cyle Larin in La Liga, Spain. I could go, as the majority of Canada's national team players are playing with clubs in Europe. I would add that the MLS is a good league. True, it doesn't compete with the top 5 leagues in Europe, but it is still a very competitive league which is fun to watch, and now includes the GOAT Lionel Messi. Players don't really have time off, it's kind of a problem actually. 😅 It got worse for a bit after COVID because the start of the 20/21 season got moved back because the season before ended late, and then in 2021 we had the euros, and then because of the 2022 winter world cup the start of the season got moved up so for some players this summer was the first time since lockdown they actually had time off... I think some players play 50-60 games every year in total and if you do the math, that's obviously brutal and not really sustainable....
