It's our first time in Scotland and we are so excited to embark on our Scotland travels! We stop in the Scottish Borders at the small fishing town Eyemouth to try some fish and chips in Scotland (since a lot of our viewers told us Scottish fish and chips are the best). We then head to Edinburgh to stay overnight in a castle in Scotland, an 18th-century Gothic castle! Many would probably consider this castle more of a stately home, but it's called Melville Castle Hotel and it's a castle to us Americans lol. Plus it's a castle you can stay in and is very reasonably priced! Our trip through Scotland is just getting started and we will be exploring Edinburgh next!

FYI, Viscount (a rank in the nobility under an Earl) is pronounced Vy-count. Basically in order of seniority Dukes (Pronounced Jukes) are at the top, then comes Marquises (markwiss) Earl, Viscount and Baron.

I've found the best way to get all the curry sauce from a gravy boat when pouring the curry over the meal is to use a chip skewered on the fork, to scrape the gravy boat with it. You'll be surprised how much is adhered to the sides and bottom of the gravy boat!

Surprised by the continual use of the term "fish and chips". Now you're in Scotland you'll need to get used to asking for a "fish supper" and investigate a haggis supper, black pudding supper, half pizza supper, steak pie supper ... basically "supper" is Scots for "and chips" (in a chip shop context anyway). And I DO hope you're coming over to the West coast. East is nice but over here our scenery is spectacular!

I can’t remember if you’ve ever watched BLACKADDER( starring Rowen Atkinson, but the first series of Blackadder ( the one that most people are told to avoid)was filmed on location at Alnwick castle. The first series really isn’t that bad, there are a couple of episodes which were really funny, but it was their first attempt where Baldrick the dogs body was the brains and Edmund was a bit stupid. They changed it around for the subsequent series and filmed mainly in a studio and the rest is history… literally!

Henry Dundas led in a case in Scotland about 1770 which was about a man Joseph Knight , a black slave who had been brought to Scotland from Jamaica . His " owners" wanted to keep hm a slave , but he won his case and ended slavery and other forms of serfdom in Scotland. ( Henry Dundas was on Joseph Knight's side). Meanwhile a few years later a group of people across the Atlantic ( some of whom owned slaves) wrote a constitution which did not address slavery - nor mentioned women.

I don't know if you've been to Edinburgh yet or not. But if you haven't I suggest visiting the Bear at Dunbar (on the way to Edinburgh from Eyemouth). Its a huge statue in honour of John Muir who was born in Dunbar but moved to America and became the 'Father of National Parks' by calling for the preservation of national parks such as Yosemite. There's a museum in the town dedicated to him.

Luckily Scotland isn't too wide near to the English/Scottish border. 😄

Did you know there is a song about Melville Castle? Traditional Scottish Songs - Willie's Gane to Melville Castle This lively, traditional ballad tells the story of one of the Border "gallants" who is going off to war (as they did so frequently in the Scottish Borders at one time, either to fight the English or another rival Border family). In so doing, Willie breaks the hearts of quite a few of the Border lassies! Melville Castle was at one time the home of Henry Dundas, 1st Viscount Melville, later Duke of Lauderdale, one of the most powerful men in Scotland in the 18th century. Willie's Gane to Melville Castle Chorus: O Willie's gane to Melville Castle, Boots and spurs an a', To bid the ladies a' fareweel Before he ga'ed awa'. Willie's young and blythe and bonnie, Lo'ed by ane and a', Oh! What will all the lassies do When Willie gaes awa? The first he met was Lady Kate, She led him through the ha', And wi' a sad and sorry heart She loot the tear-drop fa'. Beside the fire stood Lady Grace, Said ne'er a word ava; She thocht that she was sure o' him Before he gaed awa'. Chorus: Then ben the house cam' Lady Bell, "Gude troth ye need na craw, Maybe the lad will fancy me, And disappoint ye a'." Doun the stair tripped Lady Jean, The flower amang them a', "O lasses trust in Providence An' ye'll get husbands a'." Chorus: When on his horse he rade awa' They gathered round the door, He gaily waved his bonnet blue, They set up sic a roar, Their cries, their tears brocht Willie back, He kissed them ane an' a', "O lasses bide till I come hame And then I'll wed ye a'." Chorus: Meaning of unusual words: Gane=gone ga'ed awa'=went away loot=let ava=at all ben=through sic=such bide=stay You can hear it sung by the Scottish folk group The Corries on You Tube.

That curry sauce is great with fish and chips, popular in the north of england, not sure about the south. another odd one in the north is the same curry sauce with chips and boiled rice. Most chippies in the north offer 2 curry sauces, that one and a fruity one, both are excellent with chips and a fish or sausage (or battered sausage). Appreciate you calling them chips and not fries !

If you two keep eating fish and chips all the time, you will need a bigger car in the future. Chippies used to cook in lard, and even though that time has gone by, potatoes are very super high in calories (Armies actually could be four times bigger when potatoes were found by the European countries (from other countries). In the olden days, the physical labour of working 'down the pit', on farms and heavy industrial factories meant you burned those calories off. Not anymore though! Edinburgh is brilliant, but I've only been once. If you can, try and visit Rosslyn Chapel which is just South of there. Apparently, very tied in with the Knights Templar and the Holy Grail but also an amazing little church; you'll kick yourselves if you don't go!

Curry sauce or gravy with fish and chips is a must. Unfortunately fish and chip shops these days have made the price of curry/gravy sauce ridiculous, I've seen some places selling it for £3.50 for a small tub of it. I remember when you could get it for 30p a tub and that was only 10-15 years ago. I refuse to pay that so i don't have fish and chips as often as I'd like.

Eyemouth is lovely, but the best fish in Scotland is an Arbroath Smokie, eaten straight from the smokery…. One for next time 😉

You used to be able to buy a Square Inch of Land in Scotland, which would mean you were officially a Lord or a Lady. Not sure if you still can but it's pretty neat!

Viscount does not rhyme with discount. The 's' is silent and the first syllable rhymes with 'my', so as if spelled 'vycount'.

Some chippies cook the fish with the skin on. So you should always ask, and if that's what they do simply ask them to remove the skin on yours, at any chippie in the UK. And don't forget as I've mentioned before that curry sauce is available in many varieties at all branches of Tesco, Sainsbury's, Waitrose, M&S and more all over the UK. Go to the Isle of Skye in Scotland to 'The Old Man Of Storr' -- It will blow your mind!! I think it may have been used in The Game of Thrones, maybe Harry Potter, as well as many other fantasy movies. It is BREATHTAKING!! If you want to go inside Edinburgh Castle it's best to pre book it online! -- "Och aye the noo lassy"

I might be wrong but I don't know any chippie in Ayrshire who leaves the skin on, I thought that was an English thing. Maybe I need to get out more lol
