Loving the videos! Glad you enjoyed the afternoon tea, York and the countryside around it is a lovely area (a friend of mine got married around there). I'm a Norwich resident, if you fancy somewhere a bit different Assembly House in Norwich does themed afternoon teas (I went to a unicorn one, the latest they've got is a Wizard of Oz one, they also do themed cocktails). Also Norwich is home to the award winning Grovesnor Fish and Chip shop and the High Sea, which is like an afternoon tea but with fish and chips.

Unless you're posh, people in England don't tend to have afternoon tea, nearest thing we have is a mug of tea and some biscuits. When we went to York when I was a kid we used to go to a cafe not far from Betty's, but it was a lot cheaper 😂

Hiya. Too many grand places for afternoon tea in London to be able to suggest just one. However, wherever you think of going a) book well in advance - you'll probably have to, anyway and b) when you book, ask if there's a dress code. Most places suggest or expect at least 'smart casual' but some, like The Ritz, have a strict, specific dress code policy. You might have to take out a second mortgage, too, but then it IS a special occasion, after all. Stay safe. All the best to you.

Afternoon tea in London....if you google it comes up with ideas. The best need pre-booking. The atrium up in the Shard sounds interesting if you can handle the height. Our daughter took my wife for her 70th birthday treat to the Ritz hotel. Expensive, atmospheric, even the lady on the next table took Champagne with her cucumber sandwiches! I would prefer the Shard option.

It's more 'up market ' than Betty's but you'd really love it .Don't EVER feel 'out of place'. You are NOT !! The atmosphere, such as the background piano, is just for the added ambience and to make the experience more special. You're just eating cake and sandwiches, and Betty's staff are friendly and welcoming. Relax and enjoy it! Betty's has no dress code . We have taken our 2 (now Adult ) sons to Michelin Star Restaurants, for VERY special occasions, since they were about 4 years old ( we've always insisted on great table manners. They've always made us proud. ) The first time, they were 4 and 8, and the Staff were shocked but polite. It was for lunch and they behaved impeccably. So much so, that the Chef created special ' mice' ,made from potato and vegetables, for their plates and introduced himself to them. One now says he's not comfortable in that atmosphere.( Because he now has arthritis and is wheelchair dependent!!!) NO, he is as good as ANYONE ,and I say "please just relax and enjoy the food" It's the experience. The Staff at all the Restaurants, have always been impeccable in their manners and Service. My friends and I treat ourselves to an afternoon tea once or twice a year. Our go to place is the South Lodge hotel in beautiful rural Sussex. It is pricey (and we often up-grade to add a glass of English sparkling wine from the Nyetimber vineyard - better than many champagnes imo). We love to dress up for it (although many don't) and make an occassion of it. Never feel 'out of your element'. Most places are pretty casual now (apart from the super fancy hotels in London) and I'm sure they rarely have any kind of dress code.

Never feel that anything is too “classy” - all of us (rich and poor and in between) ) love Betty’s tea room. What you had was a High English Tea - and the small finger sandwiches and small cakes reflect that. Us Brits “go to Sandwiches” include, cheese, egg and cress and all the varieties you find in grocery stores (we just replicate them at home ) and none are delicate, as your had at Betty’s…they would be usual sized sandwiches and the cakes you enjoyed (and scones) a treat, not our everyday cakes ….I for one am too greedy to just have a tiny cake!

Really lovely video and so glad you enjoyed it. Traditional afternoon tea in many places can be expensive but an experience... nothing wrong with doing a bit of posh when on holiday! However the food and the teas taste so much better if one dresses for the occasion... (JOKING!) A family tradition in the UK is "High tea" on Sunday afternoon... As a Yorkshireman we knew it as a "Yorkshire tea" (not the tea bags!). There's a bit of a variation from what "southerners" eat, but the for the life of me can't remember what it is...??? all I remember is the table groaning under the weight of the food!!! Oh, and the huge anticipation for the trifle at the end! Anyone else remember that? Once again; so glad you experienced and enjoyed it!!!

Cheese and chutney/pickle, that is a British staple. Anyone who hasn't eaten it, whether posh or poor, hasn't really visited Britain and had tea. I'll take any variety served but at home, for tea, it's usually a hearty slice of mature cheddar and Branston on our home-baked bread - us being posh but poor. Great with a cool glass of Spitfire pale ale too. Your next visit will have to include some brewery tours. I grew up near Burton, so I'm instinctively a Pedigree man (been known to enjoy a pint of Bass), but when you start diving down into the world of ales, there's so many really nice pints from local breweries. In fact, it'd be worth visiting a decent pub when England are playing to get a whole new atmosphere. Very different from Betty's.

Have eaten at Betty’s in York once, but it was so long ago now - don’t remember much about it, but don’t think it was afternoon tea. However, I have had afternoon tea in the Pump Rooms in Bath (which is next to the Roman baths) and that, I imagine, was a similar experience with sandwiches, scones & cakes and music from a pianist or string quartet. Also felt a bit out of place, but on the other hand - what the heck 😊 It’s all an experience 😊 and I’d certainly do it again.

Good to see you enjoying a proper afternoon tea. This type of tea is only had on special occasions, and for most households died out decades ago. So it's special when it is served like this. You did well to ask the server about how best to have it and the dessert fork, in good places they're happy to advise. You can learn table etiquette easily as many of us Brits had to when we're growing up. The importance of 'table manners' was a major thing growing up in our family, so you were equipped to fit in and feel comfortable in any social situation, however formal or relaxed. And as international cuisine became more popular we've had to learn how best to eat other dishes - with forks, hands, chopsticks etc. You did well! 👏

There's a bit of an 'argument' over the correct way! Many people also put the jam on first then the cream. We do it that way. Neither way is wrong - just different! So glad you got to enjoy Betty's. They are obviously a Yorkshire institution. And a throwback to the days of genteel 'dining'. They also do mail orders by the way.

I've done Betty's a couple of times including the upstairs room. Also done the smaller Betty's in York. It's nice but expensive for what it is. Something to try once but I'd rather go somewhere like Goji to be honest. Really hope Goji and a few other places survived the lockdowns.

Yay! Great memories for the wife and I at Betty's in York. What a lovely Tea Room with super friendly staff and yummy cakes. Second to none teas.

Great stuff guys. Many London top hotels that do afternoon tea used to demand a shirt and tie as a minimum preferably with a jacket or suit. It may have changed but i suspect not

Well done for going to Betty’s. Part of my childhood and younger life… but the one in Harrogate is, in my opinion, even better. There are some great places to have afternoon tea near us in the Southwest… I do not know if you can get Afternoon Tea on the train anymore. But that used to be the height of opulence!

Betty’s Harrogate definitely superior to York.

Don’t let the atmosphere get to you just enjoy the experience! As for London I recommend Fortnum & Mason in Piccadilly. They’re the Queen’s Grocers don’t you know! Look forward to the video

Great Fosters in Egham, Surrey is a great place for afternoon tea, parts of the building are original Tudor, it's in fantastic gardens too. The afternoon tea itself is really excellent with even the bread individually paired in taste with the sandwich fillings...

I’ve been there and to the one in Harrogate. Lovely tea, sandwiches, scones and best of all the cakes 😋 Glad you enjoyed, just dig in and enjoy yourself. They’re cold water prawns, tiny little things which is why they’re nice.

My go to sandwich is not posh at all. A basic ham sandwich with smokey bacon crisps. Carb heaven 🥰

Mine is poached salmon. ( can't stand smoked salmon though) Last time we visited Betty's, there were poached salmon sandwiches with the Afternoon tea, I'd have cried, with disappointment ,to find smoked salmon..that's just me, though

Manchester has a very quirky place called the Richmond tearooms. I've not been there for a while but it has an Alice in Wonderland theme. It really is magical.

Afternoon tea is a bit of a tourist thing now, unless you're in high society! For the rest of us its also a treat to go to these places. Glad you enjoyed the experience. Maybe in a 'usual' English home setting you'd be feeling more relaxed! Lovely seeing your vlog, thank you x

When I attended boarding junior prep in London, eons ago, if my chums and I had the readies, on Saturdays we'd have tea at Lyons Corner House on the Strand. When my godfather invited us out to tea, which he did about once a year, it would be for afternoon tea at Fountain's Restaurant at Fortnums on Piccadilly. Lyons is long gone, and Fortnums has become a tourist trap, so on my rare visits to England today, if in London, I think the best afternoon tea is served at the Jean-Georges Restaurant at the Connaught Hotel.

If you’re ever in Northumberland I highly recommend the running fox. There’s 4 of them in different locations and it’s a totally different vibe. Very laid back and the food items are all full sized. By far the best afternoon tea I’ve had
