Our late Queen had a very dry and mischievous sense of humour. Her body guard told this story: During one of her trips to Balmoral, and because she loved the countryside and outdoors, one day she and her bodyguard were out on a walk in the appropriate gear. Two American tourists on a hiking holiday happened to pass them and not recognising the Queen in her civvies, stopped for a chat. One of the tourists said to the Queen “Where are you from?” The Queen replied “I’m from London, but I’ve been coming up here for over 80 years and have a holiday home here”. “Oh! said the tourist, then you must have met the Queen”. The Queen said “I haven’t, but Dickie here has met her many times” she said pointing to her bodyguard. “Oh!” The tourist replied. “What’s she like?” Knowing the Queen’s sense of humour well, the bodyguard replied “Well, she can be a bit cantankerous at times, but she has a wonderful sense of humour.” The next thing the bodyguard knows is the American guy comes up to him, gives his camera to the Queen and says “Can you take a photo of us?” Then they swap places and the bodyguard takes a photo of the tourists with the Queen. After the tourists left. The Queen said “I’d love to be a fly on the wall when he shows those photos to all his friends. I do hope someone tells him who I am”. 😂😂😂

It should also be pointed out that the palace was bombed not once but several times during WWII. Elizabeth and Margaret were offered to go to Canada. She along with her mother and sister stated very clearly that they would not leave without the king, and the king would never leave the palace or the country. That others endured the dangers of the bombs and so would they. I think it was the Queen or the Queen Mother that said at least they could look the East Enders (which suffered the worst of the bombing) in the eye now, as they were finally experiencing the same danger that they lived with daily. All members of the Royal family generally prefer to drive themselves whenever possible. The late Prince Phillip finally surrendered his licence after being involved in an accident causing a person injury. However it was found out later the person was a scam artist and had deliberately caused accidents then claimed injuries. His Majesty is also a keen horse rider.

I was a Police officer. My oath included the words 'To well and truly serve our Sovereign Lady, The Queen.' plus 'to befriend the citizen.'.. I took that enormously seriously and was touched as I recited it at the time. I came across HM many times as I served in London but not at Palaces..plus saw her in passing when I was off duty. The way the public cheered at the sight of her was amazing. I was once aty a set of traffic lights, off duty, in Whitehall, driving home one afternoon and she and Prince Philip came the other way around a corner She was pointing out the Mansion House to him and saying something. she glanced at me and gave me that famous full megawatt smile.. just for me. it was wonderful. I was once in a a police car, someone other than me was drivint that day, on blues and twos. in the distance we saw blue lights and my clllegue said.. whats this int he distance.. must be a prisoner escort to do with Belmarch prison. he was looking forward on the traffic and stopped as it was a bit of a small convoy of blue lights. I wasn't looking in the same way as him and saw one car was a royal car.. and it had Princess Ann in the back. she was sitting forward on her seat and one of her protection officers, sitting in the front, was leaning back and I think explaining what we were doing. giving way in effect... when we passed she smiled and waived and mouthed THANK YOU. Wonderful. Similarly, I was on duty at Prince Andrew and Fergies wedding all those years ago.. pre scandal years.. and in Birdcage walk. As the guests attending the reception at Buckingham Palace were coming in cars from the Abbey they all passed me.. I saw many famous people.. they did not tell us to look at the crowd and it was a bit thin because everyone had gone the other way to see the carriages come back via the Mall. the stand out person to pass was the lovely gentle Duchess of Kent. She looked straight at me and also mouthed THANK YOU. So.. they are not stuck up in the least nor do they take the public and police for granted. I also thought she was lovely anyway. the big exception.. and I have personal experience of this, is the utterly reprehensible, entitled. boorish. braying Prince Andrew, whom you may guess I cannot stand.

On her honeymoon in Africa their vehicle broke down and she jumped out and fixed it. She learned when she went against her father’s wishes in WW2 and joined the war effort. She drove ambulances and other military vehicles during the war, so had to learn to take care of them. She would have also learned advanced driving and avoidance techniques being as she was a target. These would come in handy when she made her subtle hints against women not being allowed to drive in SAE. She also had a lot of sausage dogs and would breed them with the corgis. I believe she created her own breed.

There's a video of King Charles in a similar vein. He has also been an active environmental campaigner, following in his father's (Prince Phillip's) footsteps. Now it's Prince William's turn, as the reigning monarch cannot be so active in issues which might be considered controversial.
@sharonmartin40362 ай бұрын
What people tend to forget is that our beautiful Queen drove an ambulance, trucks and other vehicles during WWII, and was a mechanic, doing the maintenance on those vehicles during that time. She was no wilting wallflower!! All the royals drive themselves whenever they can. For example Prince William often drives if he and the King are headed for the same venue. Obviously for formal state occasions they will be driven by chauffeurs. The comment that the Corgi's are not house trained is untrue. It was just a puppy that had not yet been house trained that had an oopsie or two, and the story became exaggerated beyond belief!

Our late, dearly missed Queen, was 5ft 4" tall. The Queen in private was a fun loving lady, she had a quick wit, was a Mum of 4 and when on holiday at Balmoral, was even known to do the dishes. The Queen was also a very successful horse breeder and her horses and riders won many a race. When in Balmoral the Royal Family go out hunting, usually for deer and Rabbit. Most wealthy Landowners stock Grouse and Pheasant and host a yearly shoot. Princess Anne, who is now in her 70's still rides.

Princess Elizabeth and her mother, Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, learned to shoot in order to be prepared in case the Nazis successfully invaded the country. The Queen Mother practised by shooting rats at Buckingham Palace. An appropriate target in the circumstances. Apparently, the Queen had an excellent sense of humour. The Queen had a buzzer or an alarm that she could press if she needed staff, like a modern version of the old bell system and she was able to press those so staff knew she wanted them. But she knew it could take up to 10 minutes for them to Come from staff quarters in the palace as it was the middle of the night.

What happened was a failure of Policing. nothing to do with being unable to raise 'staff'.. I was a Police officer but did not work in policing Royal Palaces (a Met Police responsiblity). A shift change had happened. the incoming officer went to get coffee or tea and was gone from his post. The outgoing officer had left. she did I think call for cigarettes to appease the intruder, a maid came I think and then the Police. The failure of policing was no cover whilst officers went for comfort breaks in effect and as ewer someone being a bit laxedaisy about their job. Plus, no officer really should expect they can get a drink on arriving at work but its a convention like in a lot of workplaces. I don't know what went wrong the first time. one of the problem has always been the Royals baulking at too much security. things were beefed up after the attempted kidnap of Princess Ann and those brave men who were shot. He was subdued by a passerby who was a heavy weight boxer.. punching his lights out.

Dont forget, Steve, that Her Majesty was not expected to become Queen when she was a younger Princess, growing up. Her Uncle David (aka Edward VIII) was the son of George V, and was meant to become the King upon his father's death. However, he met, fell for and chose to abdicate his role as Monarch as he was not allowed to marry his already twice-married American "lady love" (Wallis Simpson). It was only due to his abdication (and he was _not_ actually crowned King), that our late Queen's father was crowned King George VI - his chosen name in honour of his late father, King George V - (although his birthname was Albert - known as "Bertie" to our late Queen's Mother - Lady Elizabeth Bowes Lyon (pronounced "Bo's lion") who became known as Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, folloowing Elizabeth II's coronation in 1953) ... Growing up, Elizabeth was 'merely a young lady within a royal family, not expecting either her father to become King, or herself to become Queen... Edward VIII's abducation definitely put paid to any hopes of a "normal family, albeit _Royal_ life". Rest In Peace Your Majesty, your duty and absolute devotion to your early vow, is over now. Stand down. Rest Easy.

Pheasants and grouse, those 2 generally, are what they shoot. But they’re also farmers, and when the Queen was a child she wasn’t going to ascend to the throne, her uncle Edward 8th was the King, it was only when he abdicated that it was more of an immediate concern, as her father became King. It would’ve been likely as Edward didn’t have children. But as a child she was the eldest child of the younger brother.
