Yes, Jim referring to his meal as 'sheep' is weird, but we do eat adult sheep! Mutton (sheep meat) is commonly used for slow cooking (stews, curries) to prevent it from being too tough, often used in South Asian and Jamaican dishes. There's even an old idiom we have : 'mutton dressed as lamb', meaning to disguise someone or something to make it look better than it is!

Loft is just what we Brits call an attic. Aloft means above, a loft is above. Also the reason they all ended up at the same pub is because that pub would likely be their 'local', in the UK just about every suburb (if not every street) has a pub, they are everywhere and the closest one is your local, usually within walking distance of your house. The reason for this historically is because the pub (aka public house) was the meeting place for everyone in the community, it was likely the Angles and Saxons who started this when they came across the sea 1100 years ago - in Nordic and Germanic communities the 'mead hall' or 'beer hall' was the centre of the community, where everyone went to socialise at the end of the day. 1100 years later and the UK - and most of northern Europe - still has the same tradition, walk to the pub around 9 and have a few beers before bed.

a room or space directly under the roof of a house or other building, used for accommodation or storage. "the best way to prevent this heat loss is by insulating the loft"
@Guesty13 Жыл бұрын
In British usage, lofts are usually just a roof space accessed via a hatch and loft ladder, while attics tend to be rooms immediately under the roof accessed via a staircase. It's a hollow area where we can store things like for Christmas or other things to make more space when we need something we need a ladder to open a little hatch wooden bit to open to gain access to the loft its all wood slaps with fibre glass insulation to pad it around.

Driving on the left in Europe is the UK, Ireland (and associated Islands eg Channel Islands), Cyprus and Malta. There have also been issues raised about pubs with similar names recently - some of which were historical and referred to chimney sweeps - which was the argument, and a street was renamed for similar reasons with the arguments over history and what it either referred to or may have been seen to refer to

Much as a lot of our pub names ("The White Hart", "The Red Lion", "The White Lion", "The Rose & Crown", "The King's / Queen's Head", "The Duke of York") display allegiance to monarchs, or candidates to the monarchy or members of the royal family, so the name The Black Boy demonstrates allegiance to King Charles II, who succeeded his father in 1649 but due to the Civil War lived in exile in France until 1630 when he returned to England. During his sojourn in France he was said to have developed a swarthy, dark tan, common to its citizens, combined with his dark,, black hair,, so that on his return he contrasted significantly to the fair-skinned English, so much so that he attracted the sobriquet "The Black Boy". At that time large numbers of the population were still anti-monarxhy, having just emerged from the Commonwealth, so the use of this metaphor, rather than, e.g The King's Head, would have afforded a little protection to those innkeepers.
