I think had Frances Cuka not been ill, she probably would have been in this episode and the Surprise Party. It was stated she was meant to appear physically but was too ill to so could only do a brief cameo over the phone. I reckon Val and Spencer still would have featured in the original script but Johnny probably would have just invited them the way he did to tease Adam further like in this version rather than because Grandma couldn't come. It would make sense that she was probably due to appear in the Surprise Party originally seeing as it was family and friends and she probably would have arrived with the boys at the start of the episode. Although they don't even mention her in the episode, it's likely she was amongst Jackie's other friends who got given the wrong date, which would have been the easiest way to say why she didn't come. I don't think they would have completely forgotten her but decided to include Horrible Grandma, it's likely either they were both meant to come or Horrible Grandma was invited instead because Frances Cuka couldn't film. In terms of the last series, the final episode tributes her in the credits and there is a photo of her in one scene in the episode but nothing to say the character passed away as well. The writers probably would have included her in the finale if they could. Losing Frances Cuka was a huge loss to the show as she was easily one of the most loveable characters on the show and I think series 6 might have been different if she had been able to be there. Jackie and the boys were quite spiteful and nasty in The Caravan, The Paper Bag and Dad's Birthday, mainly towards Martin so having Nice Grandma there definitely would have brought some much needed laughs. RIP Frances Cuka

You can hear over the course of the series how Mark Heap (Jim) developed the character. The voice has changed and the character more , and gets more deranged as the episodes and series progresses. The absolute GENIUS of Mark is outstanding

totally brilliant , martins hearing prob adds a bit of comedic value as he often gets the wrong end of the stick and has old fashioned put-downs , it has its fair share of weird visitors too , along with Green Wing ( extremely odd but brilliant) its right up there (for me anyway)

Yeah, recognises the copper was from GOT but missed that (multiple times). I guess they are just built different as the kids say :D I have actually noticed that some Americans watch TV differently, they wait for big moments and just float along till it happens. I lived with a couple of Americans who did that and it was slightly odd. Maybe just programmed that was by the programming they had growing up? No idea! Plus recording and talking etc tho must make it a bit bonkers. Doesn't matter, I like them anyway.

I don't think Spencer was mentioned much or at all before now. It would have been nice to see him again, especially to see how different he is from Val and how he finds her. He seems quite chill and friendly. He is mentioned again in season 6 where Val reveals how he disciplines him if he doesn't do what she wants. It definitely feels strange how the writers didn't make Jackie and Val sisters and only friends as it's easy to think they're related just by the way they act.

It's weird that Martin is making jokes about Grandma having a fall considering for the majority of the show those two actually got on well. Grandma was probably one of the few people on the show in general who had a good relationship with Martin. I get his frustration in the Pyjamas having to run around after her 3 times (not helped by Jackie refusing to help) but it feels spiteful here. Considering he was equally as worried as the rest of the family when they thought she'd had a heart attack in the wedding episode, it's surprising how he's suddenly making jokes about her health. It does show how spiteful the characters were in season 5 and 6, Jackie mainly but Martin saying some stuff that could be seen as harsh. I would be surprised if King Boomer finds the Gibby episode weak considering it's probably the less spiteful in that season, he quite enjoyed the girlfriend episode which many others hated so it's possible he'll be more interested in the Gibby one. Gibby and mostly the Females are probably the more friendly episodes of season 6. The Gibby episode doesn't focus a whole lot on the family which while it's the bigger weakness, it's also the bigger strength for those who couldn't stand the spitefulness in the first two episodes.

Good stuff. King Boomer, as you're an American who's enjoying British stuff, you and the Queen should really react to the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. It's a great chance to see some British pageantry and the joining of the two nations. Meghan is like a breath of fresh air and the Brits really love her and how she makes Harry Happy. She is really classy and you'd love watching the wedding and parades. it really has the Markle Sparkle.
